About the Author
John H. Elliott has lectured at the University of Cambridge, was Professor of history at King's College, London and at Princeton and Regius Professor of Modern History at Oxford University. His previous publications include "The Revolt of the Catalans" (1963), "Imperial Spain 1469-1716" (1963), "The Old World the New 1492-1650" (1970), "Richelieu and Olivares" (1984) and "Spain and Its World 1500-1700" (1989). Most recently he has edited, with Laurence Brockliss, "The World of the Favourite" (1999), and he is currently engaged on a comparative study of British and Spanish colonization in the Americas.

Classic study which stands the test of time

J.H. Elliott is one of the great historians, and this book (despite being two generations old) is still worth reading. The themes are stimulating, the evidence wide-ranging and well marshalled. It is a model of how to integrate cultural, economic, intellectual, social and political histories.

I must also note that OccamsRazor either is reviewing the wrong book, or is very confused. Elliott does not have the political agenda attributed to him, and the book does not mention--at all--the American founders, the Constitution or the Iroquois Confederacy, which is not surprising given that the American Revolution occurred more than a century after the period covered by this book.

Interesting but deeply flawed

Some rather fascinating information about the exchange of materials and ideas between Europe and the New World. However, the veracity of the data is corrupted by a rather crude but ubiquitous " Native American-good, European--bad" attitude. It is unfortunate, that the consistent political agenda makes this title difficult to accept as work of genuine scholarship. For instance, the author makes a claim that American Founders' ideas were based in their entirety(!) upon the Constitution of the Iroquois Nations, while discounting in its entirety(!) the influence Classical thought and Enlightenment has had upon the Founders. Indeed, the author claims that the ideas of Enlightenment were largely imported from the New World ( see Noble Savage). Verdict:a fun read, but highly suspect scholarship.
Not recommended for impressionable readers incapable of critical analysis.

Some accessible Roman writing on the natural world

Most of the writing we have by Roman authors is verse rather than prose. Most of the prose that exists is political history or about rhetoric, and there is little about the planets, animals, music, mathematics, or metaphysics. This short book by Censorinus is made of short essays about things having to do with birthdays, like the development of the fetus, astrology, the notion of a Great Year, and calendars. It is pleasant to read and there are competent notes by the translator. Good translations and commentaries on prose works like this see what an educated Roman knew and thought worth writing about, and are a great contribution to the history of ideas.

Excellent graduate-level/researcher’s textbook. However, it is not for those looking for a programming guide. The text covers the major
deep-learning neural networks, their background and applications. Analysis and derivation of the 3 major such networks including 100+
mathematical equations. It has the first detailed exposition of the LAMSTAR network. A much-needed comparison of speed and accuracy of the major deep learning networks in 20 applications is included, Sample programs are appended.

Don't waste your money in this book

Don't waste your money in this book. The book just lists out some technical details without providing any insights or intuition or practical guidance. Also I don't know what's the point of including all those codes in the book. They could've put them on a website. Moreover, the kindle version is full of typos. I don't know whether the printed version is as bad.

This book lacks of "deep" explanation of the subjects it is trying to cover. Mathematical expressions and neural networks topologies are barely explained. It resembles more a dictionary of terms with general annotations and comments rather than a book one can base to learn how to design and implement neural networks, specifically CNNs. If the price of this book were much less it may be worth it to buy it.

In a pragmatic handbook for self-healing, he outlines "natural therapy," a system for being truthful about one's feelings, whether through leveling with one's partner, coming to terms with an old hurt or accepting a painful loss. His method, which includes truth telling, acceptance of self and others, letting go of the past and of false expectations, and taking responsibility for one's life, is for those trapped in emotionally confining situations, whether personal relationships, educational impasses, or financial situations. Besides the 10 steps, however, he stresses a single, seemingly simple rule: resolve pain the moment it arises. This maxim he bases on the conviction that revealing true feelings will heal one's life. (5) Wait for permission to do what is best for you.

These are 5 truths of things NOT to do to change and heal your life. They are found in the brief last chapter of this book by the late Dr. David Viscott, a well-known psychiatrist. There are 8 more of these don'ts. As well, there are 14 truths that you should do to heal and change your life. (This makes for a total of 27 "Dos and Don'ts.")

This book is a kind of handbook to successfully get through the emotional bumps of life that everybody encounters. Viscott explains more eloquently:

"This book is designed to help you achieve and preserve your emotional resilience, so you can face the difficult threats of the present and manage them effectively without being drained, feeling bad about yourself, or second-guessing your actions."

This book centers around three main concepts:

(1) Natural Therapy: refers to the spontaneous process (that this book advocates) that enables healing and change to occur.

(2) Emotional Debt: the condition of withholding feelings. This works on the principle that when feelings are not expressed, a condition of tension is created. Thus, emotional stress is the pressure of unexpressed feelings. What you want to strive for is to limit emotional debt.

(3) Toxic Nostalgia: the intrusion of past feelings into the present that bring up fear, anger, or hurt. These past feelings are stored in emotional debt.

Finally, this is a surprisingly easy book to read. There is no tedious psychobabble to contend with and you will begin learning right away.

Heard EMOTIONAL RESILIENCE, written and read by
Dr. David Viscott.

The book suggests a way of life, in which we can communicate
more freely with the people we love without baggage from our
past . . . Viscott discusses the forces that block feelings,
and he presents useful techniques for overcoming the obstacles
that can create unhappiness and unnecessary tensions in
our lives.

In some respects, listening was probably better than reading
EMOTIONAL RESILIENCE because it felt almost as if the
author was speaking to me in a one-on-one therapy session.

Among the many insights that I gained were the following:
* Express your pain the minute it occurs.

* Guilt has no purpose.

* People will love you because you're human, not because you're
perfect.

* What you avoid imprisons you.

And these do's and don't at the conclusion:

* Stop trying to prove yourself.

* Be kind to yourself every day.

* Find something to be grateful for.

* Don't try, just be.

* Don't try to change or fix others.

* Don't expect the person who hurt you to apologize.

* Don't expect people to be nicer to you than they
are to themselves.

* Don't expect others to understand you.

Karsten Herr has studied brewing technology and mechanical engineering. He has worked for many years as an operations and production manager and as a commissioning engineer. Since 2004, he has been working as a freelance consulting engineer, training and coaching production companies. Don't waste your money

Horrible book: big waste of money. It's written like a college term paper. It assumes you are already familiar with the material and provides a basic summary of how lean interactions work (but in the vaguest terms possible). There are no tips or guidelines on how to use Lean concepts at all, no examples to explain concepts, and no outlines of what you should actually do. By any other book than this, if you want to get useful knowledge (beginner, or advanced) about Lean.
