It is an epic sea story, the most arduous and prolonged naval battle in all history. For a period of nearly six years, the German U-boat force attempted to blockade and isolate the British Isles, in hopes of forcing the British out of the war, thereby thwarting the Allied strategic air assault on German cities as well as Overlord, the Allied invasion of Occupied France. Fortunately for the Allies, the U-boat force failed to achieve either of these objectives, but in the attempt they sank 2,800 Allied merchant ships, while the Allies sank nearly 800 U-boats. On both sides, tens of thousands of sailors perished.

The top secret Allied penetration of German naval codes, and, conversely, the top secret German penetration of Allied naval codes played important roles in the Atlantic naval battle. In order to safeguard the secrets of codebreaking in the postwar years, London and Washington agreed to withhold all official codebreaking and U-boat records. Thus for decade upon decade an authoritative and definitive history of the Battle of the Atlantic could not be attempted. The accounts that did appear were incomplete and full of errors of fact and false interpretations and conclusions, often leaving the entirely wrong impression that the German U-boats came within a whisker of defeating the Allies, a myth that persists.

When London and Washington finally began to release the official records in the 1980s, Clay Blair and his wife, Joan, commenced work on this history in Washington, London, and Germany. They relied on the official records as well as the work of German, British, American, and Canadian naval scholars who published studies of bits and pieces of the story. The end result is this magnificent and monumental work, crammed with vivid and dramatic scenes of naval actions and dispassionate but startling new revelations and interpretations and conclusions about all aspects of the Battle of the Atlantic.

The Blair history will be published in two volumes. This first volume, The Hunters, covers the first three years of the war, August 1939 to August 1942. Told chronologically, it is subdivided into two major sections, the War Against the British Empire, and the War Against the Americas. Volume II, The Hunted, to follow a year later, will cover the last years of the naval war in Europe, August 1942 to May 1945, when the Allies finally overcame the U-boat threat.

Never before has Hitler's U-boat war been chronicled with such authority, fidelity, objectivity, and detail. Nothing is omitted. Even those who fought the Battle of the Atlantic will find no end of surprises. Later generations will benefit by having at hand an account of this important phase of World War II, free of bias and mythology.

A former infantryman, Adolf Hitler had little use for the German navy, which he considered inept and politically suspect. Still, through the skillful maneuverings of a young, up-and-coming naval officer named Karl D�nitz, Hitler eventually endorsed a costly program of shipbuilding. As a result, D�nitz was able to field a vast fleet of U-boats when Germany went to war against France and England in 1939. Although his enemies were initially better equipped, D�nitz was the craftier fighter, launching daring raids on shipping convoys and Allied harbors, and for a time, controlling the chief Atlantic sealanes.

In this monumental history, Clay Blair analyzes the German U-boat campaigns from 1939 to 1942 (a companion volume continues his narrative to 1945), which, he writes, fall into three phases: one against England alone, another against the newly arrived American navy, and a furious third against the combined Allied forces. Blair argues, against other historians, that the "U-boat peril" has been overestimated. He holds that the American submarine campaign against Japan in the Pacific was far more effective, and observes that 99 percent of Allied merchant ships on transatlantic convoys reached their destinations. Even so, the U-boats introduced a powerful element of terror into an already horrific war, diverting Allied effort into antisubmarine campaigns and delaying the transport of much-needed materiel.

Everything about this book is big: its page count, its thesis?and its shortcomings. Blair is a respected authority on submarine warfare whose Silent Victory, a history of the U.S. submarine service, remains a widely cited work. He is also a master of operational narrative, a writer who can put readers in a destroyer's bridge or a U-boat's conning tower as convincingly as many novelists. Here, in the first of two projected volumes, Blair employs a comprehensive mix of German, British and U.S. sources to argue that the German U-boats have been mythologized, their successes overstated and their threat to the Allied war effort exaggerated. While U-boats delayed and diminished the arrival of supplies to Europe, 99% of all ships in transatlantic convoys reached their destinations. For Blair, that is a sizable margin of acceptable loss. He even stands foursquare behind Admiral Ernest King's reluctance to organize merchant convoys after Pearl Harbor. German U-boats operating off the Atlantic Coast and in the Caribbean accounted for about a quarter of all tonnage sunk during the war, but even these losses could be replaced. Blair compares by implication German failures in the U-boat war to the U.S. submarine campaign in the Pacific, which succeeded in strangling Japan by mid-1945. But to assert, as he does, that the U-boats never had a chance seems to fly in the face of an overwhelming body of evidence that cannot be dismissed as retrospective mythmaking. Even before the climactic convoy battles of 1943, the Allied navies were morally and materially stretched to near breaking point. "The only thing that ever really frightened me during the war was the U-Boat peril," Winston Churchill said. Almost every historian agrees that the German submarine force nearly won the war for Hitler. Some 2400 Allied merchant ships and 145 naval vessels totaling 13.5 million tons were sunk. Thousands of sailors perished. Yet, distinguished naval-military historian Blair argues, the U-Boat menace has been greatly overstated. His extensive research reveals that only five percent of all Allied shipping was sunk by German submarines. There were grievous losses of men and ships, but Blair argues that the vast majority of ships arrived safely. The author feels that this fact has been overlooked by pro-British historians. His monumental work (Volume 2 is scheduled for 1997) is the most thorough study of the U-Boat campaign available; it includes a massive amount of detailed statistics. Exhaustive and complete, but a bit much for the lay reader

Clay Blair has written a masterful account of the German submarine war in WWII. While it is extremely thorough, the level of detail can become cumbersome to the amateur historian. Mr. Blair outlines every mission undertaken by a German submarine during the entire war; a blessing for other researchers in naval history but a curse to the lay reader. The author does a commendable job outlining the major campaigns and summarizing the effects of the submarine war. He even comes to the conclusion that the feared "wolf packs" and the submarine war in general never posed the serious threat that the Allies believed it did. Perhaps the most interesting portion of the book is the chapters devoted to describing the development of submarine/ASW technology and the encryption/decoding efforts of both sides. The author does an average job as far as the "characters" are concerned. For most people he simply describes their military careers and follows their progression through various commands and notes the awards they receive. Very few players get the background coverage that makes them come alive and seem like real people.
I highly recommend this book for any reader of history interested the German submarine war. However, the casual or amateur reader will do well to skim through the endless details.

AN AMERICAN VIEW OF U-BOAT OPERATIONS

This is a very comprehensive work! The author is not only meticulous in describing practically each u-boat sailing during this period, but he tends to keep the reader's interest in what could be a dull assignment, by explaining pertinent background information and providing in-depth detail on various crew members, making many of them "come to life" in the words on the page. At the same time, he keeps the reader informed on what is going on in other parts of the war that could affect u-boat and ASW (anti-submarine warfare) operations and practices, such as code breaking, Hitler's rash decision-making, Operation Torch, dropping off of secret agents, sabateurs, and/or commandos into enemy territory, development of radar and sonar and HF direction finding, u-boat activity on the U.S. coast, military officials involved, etc. This book is important historically since it not only provides an extremely detailed account of operations, but it reviews it from an American standpoint based on the author's incredible current research and his reading of British historians, and then commenting on divergences of viewpoint or, in some cases, the lack of British commentary on certain embarrassing happenings. - As some reviewers have noted, Blair tends to "stick with the facts" instead of sensationalising, and in the process gains the reader's trust. Excellent u-boat history, engrossing reading.

A broad view without a human face.

You probably can't find a more exhaustive detailing of the Atlantic U-boat war. And generally speaking, this work makes for good reading and good history. What is excellent here is the overall strategic view of the war and the surrounding attempts to stay one step ahead of the enemy. The book has two flaws (they are inter-related): The mass of tonnage statistics begins to lose relevance after a while to a casual reader and also de-humanizes the story. Missing from this book is a good description or feel for any but the most famous of U-boat captains, or descriptions of individual patrols that brings them to life.

About the Author

Jim Burtles, KLJ, MMLJ, FBCI, is a highly regarded global leader and practitioner in the Business Continuity profession with over 35 years of experience spread across 24 countries. He is also the author of Principles and Practice of Business Continuity: Tools and Techniques and is working on a Second Edition due for publication in early 2015.
Burtles was one of founders of the Business Continuity Institute (BCI) and in 2001 his peers presented him with BCI's Lifetime Achievement Award. In his work as BCI's Standards Officer, Burtles was heavily involved in the evolution of its professional standards and ethics. As an honorary fellow he now serves on the Global Membership Council representing the interests of the worldwide membership.
He received the Freedom of the City of London in 1992. In 2005 was granted the rank of a Knight of Grace in the Military and Hospitaller Order of St. Lazarus of Jerusalem, an ancient charitable body concerned with the treatment of skin diseases.
Burtles' first involvement with disaster recovery was in 1974 as a field engineer responsible for repairing and recovering a critical banking system struck by lightning. He went on to become IBM's disaster recovery country specialist before joining a disaster recovery service as their principal emergency management consultant in 1987.
In 2001 he set out on his own as the principal of Total Continuity Management, where he now focuses on executive level training and the development of specialist emergency response skills.
Throughout all these years he tended to specialize in serving the personal needs of those involved in emergency situations. He trained and served as a trauma counselor before developing a counseling technique aimed at helping the victims of disaster-related trauma. This was published in 1998 as A Counselor s Guide to the Restabilization Process. His practical experience includes hands-on recovery work with victims of such violent events as riots, bombings, earthquakes, storms, and fires. This includes technical assistance and support in 90-odd disasters, as well as advice and guidance for clients in over 200 emergency situations.
Through his activities as a trainer and consultant, he has helped to introduce the personal aspects of business continuity, emergency planning, and related disciplines into both the public and private sectors.

Business Continuity Planning at its best!

This book should be a staple in your library if you are responsible for business continuity and DR planning at your company. I was new to the field so I really appreciated how the book was layed out and how easy it was to transfer the information to my plan. There are a lot of applicable practices, tools, cheatsheets, etc that you can easily incorporate into your plan. I was very pleased with this book.

Jim Burtles is one of the business continuity professionals I most admire because of his long-standing commitment to the business continuity industry, and his extensive contributions to the profession over his broad career.

So, as a publisher (and as publisher of this book) I was thrilled when I first saw Jim's manuscript. There are not many people who could have written this book - and far fewer who could have written it nearly as well.

This book is an ideal combination of the practice of business continuity - standards, best practices, global perspective - and, the process of business continuity - planning, development, implementation, and so forth. Jim presents a clear picture of not just how to do what needs to be done, but why. By striking a balance between theory and practice, I believe Jim's approach makes the reader's job much easier and more effective.

There are other books on business continuity - I have edited or published many of them - but Jim Burtles' book is my favorite. With the included CD-ROM containing extensive tools and resources, this book is a no-brainer for anyone who wants to understand business continuity management, is about to embark on implementing a business continuity program, or is looking to bring an existing business continuity program up to world-class best practice.

a great look into US-Indian policy and relations

i first came upon this book through my brother who studies archaeology at university of arizona. his american indian studies professor used this book as the textbook for the class. i read it cover to cover and found it very intruiging and fascinating (as well as horrifying). a great start for anyone whos interested in how the land your living on went from belonging to an indian tribe to becoming yours, and what happened to the people who owned it.

Very good tile set

First, this is a great tile set and it's referenced very often in D&D modules and other publications.

Second, it's out of print which is why everyone is gouging the price on it so much. I looked everywhere to find this product cheaper but generally you're very lucky to find it under $30 now (it first sold for ~$10).

Third, some of these pieces have been repeated in other tile sets, but overall I'm still very glad I have this one because the pieces are pretty versatile as a full set. The quality of the graphics are very good.

A Great Value for $10

If you love D&D and 4E, spend your spare $10 on this rather than on the Dungeons & Dragons Character Record Sheets: Roleplaying Game Character Sheets, 4th Edition. You'll find these tiles much more useful and a much better value. And unlike the latter, this one actually underexaggerates its page count (says "1", but there are 6 two-sided tile sheets with over 40 tiles, large and small). Although "Halls of the Giant Kings" begins a new Dungeon Tiles product line, you won't find it much different than the previous "DT" line of tiles. Just a new new style cover, but the tiles have the same weight and texture as previous releases.

Although, as the title indicates, the illustrations of many of the tiles suggest scenarios for halls of, um, giant kings, a good number of them are very generic stone floors, objects, rubble, glyphs and so on. This makes DU1 suitable for most simple dungeon crawls, something missing from many recent DT releases now that DT1 is long out of print. In short: great value for the money.

The author offers very practical advice on obtaining quality images with limited repeats. These are the tricks from the seasoned techs!

This text provides effective broad application guidelines for successful imaging in routine and trauma situations. This is a good read for the new graduate as well as seasoned technologists who want to refresh their general radiographic positioning and critical thinking skills. Case studies presented provide real life situations for the application of the practical tips provided.

About the Author
After 32 years as a radiography program director, Quinn B. Carroll recently took his retirement from Midland College in Texas as an assistant professor to write full time. Quinn has published three textbooks, workbooks and a number of journal articles. His newest publication is Radiography in the Digital Age, released in 2011 along with several instructional ancillaries. Quinn has presented over 120 seminars in Canada and the USA, and many dozens of presentations for state societies and the ASRT. Quinn received his Master of Education degree from the University of Wyoming and his BS degree from the University of Utah, where he also obtained his radiography training at the University Medical Center. He is a dynamic, fun speaker and very excited to be part of meeting the challenge to embrace digital technology head on.

Dennis Bowman RT(R), CRT(R)(F) has been an active radiographer for over 35 years. He has been employed as a Staff Technologist at Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula (CHOMP) in Monterey, California since 1990 and was the Clinical Instructor until 2014. With a digital dosimeter and a vast array of body phantoms, Dennis has put in hundreds of hours researching and studying digital techniques. In addition to the weekly classes he gives his students, Dennis has travelled internationally lecturing on how best to use and critique digital radiography. Because Dennis still is a "shooting tech" and CI, he truly understands all the problems techs run into and has figured out a fun and lighthearted way to explain it.

Finally somebody is talking about real positioning issues

I have taught for many years and much of what is in this book has been informally talked about in my positioning classes. This text formally presents these positioning issues and then explains why things are this way. There are very clear illustrations to demonstrate these principles as well. I expect this book to be a very welcome addition for radiography instructors and I plan to add it to my required textbooks this fall. Great job!

perfect for adapting to usual imaging conditions

Tight spaces, uncooperative patients, NO PROBLEM! The image critique was a greater refresher. The only problem I had is the binder started breaking down and the pages was loosing up

Needs work

Has a lot of great tips, however the book suffers from poor organization and the index doesn't help much. There's good information in this book, but it is hard to find when you need it.

Severe trauma can make the simplest xray very difficult and there are some parts of the body that are completely omitted in this book or given a single sentence of attention. I hope this book addresses these issues in the next edition.
