Journey For Our Time: The Journals of the Marquis de Custine Russia 1839, by Marquis Astolphe de Custine

Blacklisted by the Soviets, these journals have long been recognized for offering the most fascinating and revealing impression of the country by a foreigner. The Marquis' writings abound in observations on Russia's social, political, and religious states--leading Custine to dire forebodings. "he...records the...jokes, complains, anecdotes of innkeepers, princelings, engineers and customs officials...we accompany him on a journey of exploration in more ways than one, and he is always good company."--Roy Foster.

About the Author
Astolphe de Custine was born in into the French aristocracy in 1790, during the period of great civil war upheaval in France. Both his father and grandfather were guillotined during the Terror. Long established in his anti-revolutionary and pro-monarchical instincts, Custine went to Russia in 1839 'to find arguments against representative government'. In doing so he achieved remarkable feats of travel and observation, and was dubbed by many 'the Tocqueville of Russia.' He died in 1857.

Excellent primary source
By J. Mire
Yes, Custine's writing is swarming with stereotypes, unverified reports, and exclamations stemming from ignorance. But, the virtue of this book is not in the quality of its writing or the accuracy of its portrayal of Russia under Nicolaus I. Together with all of its faults, this book is a historical artifact, a part of history and not the retelling of it. When it is read with this in mind, Custine's account is compelling, funny, surprising to anyone who is at least roughly familiar with 19th century Russia. Not to mention that it is one of the rare published primary sources about the subject that can be read and enjoyed by a non-historian.

A sobering and prophetic view of Russia (book details)
By Patrick W. Crabtree
It's hard to believe that an individual could visit a country for only three months and exit with not only a precise appraisal of the culture, but accurate and prophetic advice to the world about that country as well. The Marquis de Custine was just such a person.

The French Marquis made his journey to Russia in 1839 at a time when it was being ruled by a particularly despotic Tsar: Nicholas I. (You can read all about him in: Nicholas I: Emperor and Autocrat of All the Russias.) The Marquis went in with an agenda of sorts which was to acquire justification for monarchial rule, as France had recently undergone much upheaval over this issue, (and there was much more to come in 1848!) When he eventually "escaped" from Russia, the Marquis had completely reversed his sanguine views on the benefits of living under the reign of a monarch.

George W. Bush would have been well-served to have had the Marquis de Custine at his side when he, "...looked into Vladimir Putin's soul." The Marquis would have provided the U.S. President with a far superior assessment than the one which Bush took away from the experience... and that is the genius of both The Marquis's perceptiveness of human thought and behavior, as well as of his notable power with a pen. Even his most casual comments seem astonishing today, considering that they were made in 1839 -- here is but one of many examples:

"Either the civilized world will, before fifty years have passed, fall again under the yoke of the [Russian] barbarians, or Russia will undergo a revolution more terrible than the revolution [1789-1799] whose effects are still felt in Western Europe." (Page 71.) Well, the Marquis missed the mark by a mere 30 years because the Bolsheviks (Communists) effected their horrific revolution, beginning in 1917, completing the job by the following year.

I have read all the major Russian literature and have studied Russian culture for many years and I'm compelled to say that, subsequent to his brief visit, the Marquis was able to encapsulate not only how Russian culture came to level out but additionally WHY oppression of the masses by despots was endured by the people there for so many hundreds of years. There are a few factual mistakes in the book, (e.g., the myth about Prince Potemkin having "painted fake cities" along a river tour to please the Tsarina Catherine [II] the Great on her tour of the region), and The Marquis tended to paint people with a broad brush. He also envisioned the solution to the "Russian barbarianism problem" via the possible supplanting of the Greek Orthodox faith by the Universal Catholic Church! Still, the Marquis somehow managed to capture the essence of Russian culture of the period and for many decades to come in this remarkable 240-page journal.

If the work has a flaw it is perhaps the ad nauseum emphasis on four or five negative aspects of Russian society, particularly as it concerns the appalling and gruesome hubris of the various tsars. I suspect that this emerges so redundantly due to the Marquis's own paranoia concerning his ability to eventually egress from the country. The secret police and other spies pretty much monitored his every move during his entire visit and another traveler, much like himself, was arrested and detained in a Moscow dungeon just shortly before the Marquis's own excursion concluded.

This 2001 work includes a nice introduction by Simon Sebag Montefiore, (author of: Potemkin: Catherine the Great's Imperial Partner), and was artfully translated from the French into English by Phyllis Penn Kohler. The book probably has somewhat limited interest to a specific market but if you have a particular curiosity of either Russian history or the politics of monarchies then you'll find lots of treasure here.

Highly recommended to readers of history.

Better than Netter's. More detailed
By Tonex
Definately underated. I have no idea why. I have Netter's, Adams and Grant's and I find that both Adams and Grant's are more useful to me than Netter's for anatomy lab classes, especially when used together. Netter's made a very good name for itself. However, before you purchase, take the time and visit the bookstore or the library and compare them all and you will see what I am talking about. I could have used Grant's alone as a student but I bought it last, if only I had the same advice I am giving you I would have chosen Grant's in the first place. I am a curious person and I like to know and understand everything about what I am learning to enhance my skills in the area and I definately think Netter's is lacking in the area of detail information but is very good on labeling the body parts and also has great illustrations. In my opinion and the opinion of my husband and 19 year old, the illustrations in this book may not be as good as Netter's but the information on body parts in Grant's is much better than Netter's. I think Netter's would be better for a graduate while Grant's could be used for the medical student as a study material and for lab classes as well as for a graduate. I say again look before you leap and know what you want so you can make the best choice. I actually think that Grant's is a keeper, but you be the judge. I am not really saying the others are bad, but wouldn't you want the best for your money? 10/08

Magnificent guide to the components of a marvelous "machine."
By Amazon Customer
This is indeed a splendid atlas to the anatomy of the human body. The particular current edition benefits from photographs and CT scans in crucial places, and is greatly improved over earlier versions. Although it is a bit much to expect it to be present on everyone's bookshelf (even in paperback), I believe that every household should be aware of its existence, particularly in this age of self-managed medicine.

This edition comes with a supposed subscription to "ThePoint" at ThePoint.LWW.com which is one of the most combative and useless sites I have visited...I would class it as a total waste of time, but this is not meant as a negative comment about the book itself. I would comment in passing that the front-cover reference to "thepoint.Iww.com" is wrong, and that the "I" is supposed to be an "L." In a sans serif font it is difficult to decide which is right.

The Rise and Decline of an Iberian Bourgeoisie: Manresa in the Later Middle Ages, 1250-1500 (Cambridge Studies in Medieval Life and Thought

The Rise and Decline of an Iberian Bourgeoisie is one of the first long-term studies in English of an Iberian town during the late medieval crisis. Focusing on the Catalonian city of Manresa, Jeff Fynn-Paul expertly integrates Iberian historiography with European narratives to place the city's social, political and economic development within the broader context of late medieval urban decline. Drawing from extensive archival research, including legal and administrative records, royal letters, and a cadastral survey of more than 640 households entitled the 1408 Liber Manifesti, the author surveys the economic strategies of both elites and non-elites to a level previously unknown for any medieval town outside of Tuscany and Ghent. In a major contribution to the series, The Rise and Decline of an Iberian Bourgeoisie reveals how a combination of the Black Death, royal policy, and a new public debt system challenged, and finally undermined urban resilience in Catalonia.

An Outstanding Work Making Extensive use of Primary Source Data
By Brintkt
An extremely well written in depth account of Manresa documenting the challenges experienced by its royally chartered civic government within medieval Catalonia as a financial revolution took hold. This level of historical and economic data is certainly necessary to better appreciate the impact that waves of plague and seemingly never ending conflicts had on a Catalonian inland city in the late fourteenth century. This work clearly explains, with examples, the financial structure fostered by the Crown of Aragon's monarchy to obtain Corts approved extraordinary taxes supporting its various external conflicts and civil war with Castile. The impact of the financial revolution within Catalonia is addressed with comparison made to other cities using data from the Florentine survey of 1427 and the Manresa Liber Manifesti of 1408. Significant primary source data is used throughout with tables to clearly indicate the summarized results of what was found. References and notes are provided in abundance.

As a graduate student, I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in medieval Catalonia and the Crown of Aragon. It provides an excellent detailed example of Catalan life and financial issues useful when working into Alan Ryder's book, "The Wreck of Catalonia".

Highly Recommended!
By Rolf Dobelli
One of Robert Shook's first bits of wisdom for salespeople is that enthusiasm is contagious. He proves this in his latest book, which crackles with his own palpable excitement for the topic of sales and the anecdotes that he's compiled to illustrate his points. He peppers his introductions with slang and cliches. Oddly, this is a plus, making the writing honest, human and real. The book is simply and concisely organized. Shook wants to entertain as well as inform his audience. We [...] recommend this book to those who are in sales, those who supervise salespeople, and those who love good business war stories.

Great Book
By Zev Saftlas
If you're in sales-your gonna love this book. Many of these stories are classic sales stories about achieving sales success. I believe the best way to learn how to do anything is find a role model. Find someone who has done it. That what this book does. It shows you many real life examples of what really works in the sales business. Read, enjoy and apply them into your situation. Highly recommended.

Great book on beginning sailing. I had sailed for a year before I read this book, and still learned a lot. It has good information on some of the finer technical points of sailing that you would probably not learn by just doing (sailing). Explains topics well in a very understandable fashion.

My two grand daughters are big fans of Dan and Phil. They saw them on their US tour and were excited about their second book. I got them each a book and after looking through it myself found it to be a very well done photo gallery and stories of Dan and Phil's adventures from their tour. I gave the books to my grand daughters tonight, Christmas Eve, and they loved them. They think I'm a pretty cool grandpa.

Good book for tweens/teens
By Kindle Customer
The stars are according to my daughter. I haven't read the book, but she loves it, and it's just what she wanted. It is a little cheaper here at Amazon than to order from Dan & Phill directly so that makes me happy. It seems to be all the rage with the tweens/teens so it must be good, at least in their eyes. My daughter is 13, if you need a reference, a good gift for her age group.

Waiting for Godot - Bilingual: A Bilingual Edition, by Samuel Beckett

From an inauspicious beginning at the tiny Left Bank Thtre de Babylone in 1953, followed by bewilderment among American and British audiences, Waiting for Godot has become one of the most important and enigmatic plays of the past fifty years and a cornerstone of twentieth-century drama. As Clive Barnes wrote, “Time catches up with genius. . . . Waiting for Godot is one of the masterpieces of the century.” Beckett wrote the play in French and then translated it into English himself. In doing so he chose to revise and eliminate various passages. With side-by-side text, the reader can experience the mastery of Beckett’s language and explore its nuances. Upon being asked who Godot is, Samuel Beckett told director Alan Schneider, “If I knew, I would have said so in the play.” Although we may never know who we are waiting for, in this special edition we can rediscover one of the most poignant and humorous allegories of our time.

Review

“One of the true masterpieces of the century.” —Clive Barnes, The New York Times

“One of the most noble and moving plays of our generation, a threnody of hope deceived and deferred but never extinguished; a play suffused with tenderness for the whole human perplexity; with phrases that come like a sharp stab of beauty and pain.”
—The Times (London)

“Beckett is an incomparable spellbinder. He writes with rhetoric and music that . . . make a poet green with envy.” —Stephen Spender

“Reading Beckett for the first time is an experience like no other in modern literature.”
—Paul Auster

“[Godot is ] among the most studied, monographed, celebrated and sent-up works of modern art, and perhaps as influential as any from the last century. The nonstory of two tramps at loose ends in a landscape barren of all but a single tree, amusing or distracting themselves from oppressive boredom while they wait for a mysterious figure who never arrives, the play became the ur-text for theatrical innovation and existential thought in the latter half of 20th century.” —Christopher Isherwood, The New York Times

About the Author
Samuel Beckett (1906-1989), one of the leading literary and dramatic figures of the twentieth century, was born in Foxrock, Ireland and attended Trinity University in Dublin. In 1928, he visited Paris for the first time and fell in with a number of avant-garde writers and artists, including James Joyce. In 1937, he settled in Paris permanently. Beckett wrote in both English and French, though his best-known works are mostly in the latter language. A prolific writer of novels, short stories, and poetry, he is remembered principally for his works for the theater, which belong to the tradition of the Theater of the Absurd and are characterized by their minimalist approach, stripping drama to its barest elements. In 1969, Beckett was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature and commended for having 'transformed the destitution of man into his exaltation.' Beckett died in Paris in 1989.

TOWARD A THEOLOGY OF WAITING: BILINGUAL BECKETT
By Love Thy Enemy
This review refers to the recent and very welcome bilingual edition of En attendant Godot.

Originally written in French as a break while Mr. Beckett tackled his obscure and thick novel writing in exile within southern France from occupied Paris (where he served in the Resistance until directly threatened; please the excellent biography Samuel Beckett: A Biography), Waiting for Godot became one of the most influential plays of the Twentieth Century.

Grove Press early cornered the American market for Beckett, its wisest and most respected publications. Here Grove Press and Les Editions de Minuit graciously combine copyrights to publish this important bilingual edition.

This edition contains only the barest of introductions, basically the English textual genesis with little background. For instance we do not read in this introduction how barely authorized, if at all, was the Miami production with the great Bert Lahr, a production one wishes deeply might have been recorded in some media, yet we read the cast of characters twice. We do not read of several other influential and important productions, including the full story of those directed by Mr. Beckett himself, not the prison productions. I certainly wish this play could be produced as written with a quartet of sextagenarians.

We have here in this introduction only the barest of bones of some textual variants, with a very brief bibliogrpahy.

Yet not much more is needed. The history and meaning have been deeply discussed in other publications, including several available here upon the amazon. For those who wish to learn the "back story" of Didi and Gogo, we may read the entertaining Beckett novel Mercier and Camier; also recommended for beginners is his intriguing first novel Murphy By Samuel Beckett.

What counts here is this bilingual edition, presenting face to face, line by line, the two languages, English and French, in which this play was written by Beckett.

The left hand page presents the original French text; the right hand page presents what the introduction indicates is the most authentic English translation available. This presents us with several advantages, and not only in bilingual education or sencond language instruction. We see here more broadly the intent of the author.

This therefore is a very important copy to have and to study, in this generous and easily readable Grove bilingual edition, durably hardcovered.

We each of us wait for Godot. Maybe tomorrow. Maybe we will forget.

Read here and remember.

One of the masterworks of the 20th century - but should be seen as well as read
By Robert Moore
First, a word about editions. This edition of Waiting for Godot - Bilingual: A Bilingual Edition replaces the earlier English-only edition of Waiting for Godot: A Tragicomedy in Two Acts (Beckett, Samuel). The latter, though with occasional changes of covers, has long been the standard edition of the play in English. It features Beckett's translation of the play in English, and nothing else. But Grove is replacing it with this parallel version, which will feature the French original alongside Beckett's translation into English. This new edition also features an introduction, which the earlier edition lacks.

Too many people forget that this is a PLAY, i.e., something that provides words for actors on a stage. It is not primarily intended to be read in a book. Unfortunately, this is how most people experience the play, therefore depriving them of most of elements of the performance. Therefore, I am going to make a recommendation for a way of increasing the richness of your performance of the play. Too many people forget that this is a PLAY, i.e., something that provides the words for actors on a stage. It is not primarily intended to be read in a book. Unfortunately, this is how most people experience the play, therefore depriving them of most of elements of the performance. Therefore, I am going to make a recommendation for a way of increasing the richness of your performance of the play.

Though an Irishman, Beckett originally wrote the play - as he did with almost all of his works - in French first and then later translated them himself into English (in contrast, Vladimir Nabokov after moving to the United States wrote his books in English, and then translated them into French and Russian, his wife doing the translations into German). The play was originally performed in Paris, while the English-language premiere took place in Ireland. The American debut was not on Broadway, but in Miami, Florida, with Bert Lahr and Tom Ewell.

Instead of merely reading the play, read it while listening to a recording of the original Broadway production of Waiting For Godot, which starred Bert Lahr (best known as the Cowardly Lion in THE WIZARD OF OZ) as Estragon and E. G. Marshall as Vladimir. While you still wouldn't get the visual dimension of the play, hearing the actors bring the characters to life adds new layers to the play that you would never get merely by reading it. Lahr was an unexpected choice to star in the play, given that he wasn't an actor so much as a vaudevillian comedian. His acting style was too over-the-top to be convincing in film (though perfect for the Cowardly Lion); I read somewhere - I don't recall where - that he was more like a cartoon character incarnated than a human. He nonetheless gives a marvelous performance here. Marshall was one of the most distinguished stage actors of his generation and more than holds his own with Lahr while acting as more the straight man.

If you listen to the recording while reading the book, the performance that will most come to life is that of Lucky. I'd read the play 2 or 3 times over the years and seen it once on the stage in which I now realize was a rather tame production, but had not really paid much attention to Lucky. His main contribution was a single, very long speech (not terribly unlike the long speech given by The Fireman in Ionesco's THE BALD SOPRANO in terms of length and its absurdity - a speech that I gave in a college performance of the play). Read on the page it can seem interesting and silly, but hearing the actor (though it wasn't indicated in the recording, Alvin Epstein played Lucky in the original Broadway production and it is almost certainly him here) perform the speech is revelatory. He doesn't say the words so much as shriek, yelp, gasp, bark, and screech them. Hearing Lucky's speech performed by a talented actor transforms your appreciation of both the speech and the play.

This is one of the truly great works of the 20th Century, one of the key plays making up what Martin Esslin dubbed The Theatre of the Absurd, but it is not best experienced by reading it on the page. Try to see it performed instead, or at bare minimum in the Bert Lahr/E. G. Marshall version noted above. You wouldn't think that you had experienced a Bob Dylan song merely by reading the lyrics, and so also you won't experience WAITING FOR GODOT unless you hear or see it performed.

Review of Play: Waiting for Godot - A Tragicomedy in Two Acts

Written in: 1949

Premiere in: 1953

By: Samuel Beckett (1906 - 1989)

Originally written in French and translated to English by the author himself.

This play takes place on a desolate road next to a barren tree. There are two aimless men loitering and passing the time in discussion. They are soon joined by two others. The first act of the play lasts through one evening. The second act lasts through a second evening almost identical to the first. When ever the subject of leaving their spot arises, we learn that they can't leave because they are "Waiting for Godot" and need to stay at this particular spot on the road.

There is a sense of timelessness. The second evenings (second act) seems to be slightly altered copy of the first evening (first act). The characters are "Waiting for Godot" and for salvation. Their wait for salvation might well be endless since all of them are loath to face their true motives, their real needs, their personal wants and honest desires. They don't seem to know why they are "Waiting for Godot" or what Godot (God?) will bring them. When they mention suicide they flippantly dismiss the subject. One time they say they can not hang themselves because they have no rope when in fact there is a rope lying on the stage as one of the few props.

They appear to have voluntarily subjected themselves to a purgatory and don't have the courage or initiative to even question their situation.

The discussion ranges from an inane account of boots being too tight to sophistic meanderings on the purpose of life. The characters seem to relentlessly keep talking to avoid facing something. We are not privy to any of their pasts or in fact any personal information about any of the characters. They might have been meeting on the desolate road for an endless time, so that any past that they had is lost in the mist of their memories.

The nearly barren tree reminds them of a hanging tree and by implication a crucifixion cross. The tree dominates the stage background just as Godot dominates the lives; free choice and every expression of the four main characters. Does the milieu force the characters to think of salvation to the exclusion of a meaningful life? Could their need for salvation keep them trapped in a purgative existence where escape would be a form of condemnation which none of them could tolerate?

The play "Waiting for Godot" forces the reader to ask questions of himself/herself.

Praise for Timothy Keller and Jesus the King

"Much of Redeemer is remarkably traditional. What is not traditional is Dr. Keller's skill in speaking the language of his urbane audience . . . Observing Dr. Keller's professorial pose on stage, it is easy to understand his appeal." —The New York Times

"Fifty years from now, if . . . Christians are widely known for their love of cities, their commitment to mercy and justice, and their love of their neighbors, Tim Keller will be remembered as a pioneer of the new urban Christians." —Christianity Today

"In discussing the identity of Jesus, the author describes him as a man both deeply embedded within his culture and times while also living counter to them in many ways. . . . The authordescribes a man aware of his upcoming sacrifice, and indeed, a man in continual sacrifice, as he had descended from heaven to live on earth. Captivating reading from a Christian perspective." —Kirkus Reviews

"Keller engages the reader with astute pastoral application, littered with excellent sermon illustrations. . . . [Jesus the King] finds Keller in familiar territory: producing another great book, leaving readers from atheist to Christian grappling with the nature and implications of the gospel of Jesus Christ." —Michael Johnson, DesiringGod.org

"This is the book where Tim Keller hits his stride as an author. . . . Keller directs readers' gazes toward the cross and will not allow them to look away." —Collin Hansen, The Gospel Coalition

Keller's Best Book Yet
By Bradley Bevers
C.S. Lewis was the greatest Christian author in generations. Anyone, no matter what stage of life they are in, can read his books effortlessly. Lewis' words formed Christian doctrine, shattered Pharisaical religious myths, and evangelized the lost. Few authors are able accomplish this with their life's work; Lewis accomplished it in every book he authored. And now Tim Keller has authored a book that is just as sweeping, applicable, and paradigm shifting as Lewis' best work.

King's Cross is a book about the life of Jesus as told in the Gospel of Mark. Keller, verse by verse, offers his thoughts on every major theme in Mark. There have been countless commentaries and just as many devotional works on the Gospels; King's Cross is both.

For the new Christian, King's Cross will bring the words of Jesus to life. Its easy to forget the power that Scripture has when you read it with fresh eyes. In King's Cross, Keller gives insight in the world of Jesus. He shows just how earth shattering the arrival of the Good News was. Keller will gently deconstruct the myth that the Bible is not a book that is inspired by God. You will walk away from King's Cross understanding just how radical the Gospel of Mark is.

For the pastor and Bible study leader, King's Cross should be a joy to read. Keller is a dedicated pastor whose love for his people comes across in each paragraph. Its easy be trapped in the intellectual realm of seminary or the spiritual emotionalism that infects almost every church. Keller never loses sight of his true purpose: sharing the gospel of Jesus Christ. He is able to write intellectually without going over the head of anyone, emotionally without any saccharine-sweet spirituality, and evangelistically without Bible thumping. His exposition of the text should inspire those who teach others in the church.

For the Pharisee, King's Cross will convict you. Whether you are an old school Pharisee who still tithes off the mint and cumin or newer model that looks down on the people who are "too religious," Keller seeks to expose and redeem you with Jesus' words. Its easy to miss how much Jesus despises religionists when we pick a verse here or there. When you read any of the gospels in one sitting, it's hard to say what Jesus dislikes more. On page 47 Keller writes, "The gospel says that the humble are in and the proud are out. The gospel says the people who know they're not better, not more open-minded, not more moral than anyone else, are in, and the people who think they're on the right side of the divide are most in danger." Convicting for the Pharisee in all of us.

For the non-Christian, this is a book that will show you why Christians have fallen in love with Christ. You will see Jesus as the original readers of the Gospels did. You will read the words of Jesus and be changed. Forgive Christians of the arguments and the apologetics and the attitudes that turned you against Jesus. Read this book, read the Gospel of Mark, and just ask yourself if it could be true. Could there really be one person who defines history with His life and death? If you have come to cherish the belief that Jesus was nothing more than a great person and a good teacher, a worthy example to follow, then this book will take that away from you. Jesus did not leave us that option. "Either he's a wicked liar or a crazy person and you should have nothing to do with him, or he is who he says he is and your whole life has to revolve around him . . ." (45, King's Cross)

Keller has already written impressive works that are among the best in the last decade, including The Reason For God and The Prodigal God. King's Cross book does not fit into a certain category and exposes the power of the Gospel to modern readers. King's Cross is broad in its appeal, brilliant in its execution, and is Keller's best work to date. Buy at least two copies, because you will give it away.

Gospel saturated book!
By Amazon Customer
I am not as theologically savvy as other reviewers and even though I was raised in the Christian family, I didn't understand what the Gospel is really like until I read Keller's first book: Reason for God. I just finished chapter two of King's Cross and could not stop my tears. Thank you. Pastor Keller, if you read this, please make this book available in my language (Indonesian language) so that I can share it with my family and friends back in my country.

Brings the Gospel of Mark to Life!
By Fr. Charles Erlandson
I debated on whether to give Tim Keller's new book, "King's Cross," 4 or 5 stars and finally settled on 4. It's a compelling book that supplies a fresh reading of the Gospel of Mark, but in some places it's also a little mundane.

What Keller does best is to take the Gospel of Mark and present its major themes in a new light, while maintaining a fidelity to the Bible as the Word of God and accurate record of the life and ministry of Jesus Christ. Keller's book fills a much-needed niche: it's not as detailed or as technical as a commentary and it's not as personal as a devotional work but it helps the reader understand the Gospel of Mark by presenting it through a series of compelling ideas or images. While "King's Cross" doesn't elaborate on every passage, Keller gives his reader the big picture that is so often lacking in works on the Bible and in modern Christianity in general. He thus avoids the error of many devotional works that take random verses out of context while at the same time retaining a personal style and touch.

"King's Cross" will help the reader understand the Gospel of Mark and the good news of Jesus Christ in a new, imaginative way that will be of great value to many readers. Hopefully, it will entice new disciples of Jesus Christ to Him and will help those familiar with Jesus Christ and the gospel to see them both in a new light. Maybe, by providing a slightly new perspective, it will wake many of us out of our complacency and take us from seeing the good news of Jesus Christ as merely advice and return it to being fantastic, life-changing news!

Essentially, Keller takes the life of Christ, as told by Mark in the Gospel of Mark and presents it in terms of 2 main themes: "The King" and "The Cross," from which Keller gets the title of his book.

By using a succession of images to capture the meaning of Mark's Gospel (and the life of Jesus Christ), Keller has given us an imaginative approach to God and His Word that will be welcomed by many readers. For example, in Chapter 1, "The Dance," Keller portrays the coming of Christ in flesh as the result of the interpersonal, giving love of the Holy Trinity. Keller thus portrays the life of the Christian as a dance involving God and contrasts it to a life that is merely going through the motions. The temptation of Christ is portrayed by Keller as an attempt to get Jesus to stop the dance with God. In this way, even the spiritual battles we have, as Christ had, are seen within the ultimate reality of The Dance. He also provides good background to many chapters, such as Mark's inclusion of the Holy Spirit as being like a dove in Mark 1.

In Chapter 2, Keller portrays the gospel as "The Call" and again begins by situating it the historical use of the word (as he did with the image of the Spirit as a dove in Chapter 1). He explains, for example, that "Gospel" means "history-changing, life-shaping news. Unlike other religions or no religion, which are just advice, Christianity is primarily "news"! The difference is that Christianity and the call of Christ are based on what Christ has done, and not on what we do. Repentance and the call of the gospel to Christ are intended to take us out of ourselves and bring us true freedom and life. Unlike other religions, in which we choose who to follow, Jesus calls His disciples to follow Him.

In a similar way, in Part One, Keller takes on other topics associated with Christ as the King. Keller doesn't always relate them in an obvious way to Christ as King, and so sometimes the overall theme is lost. But each chapter is an engaging and helpful look at one aspect of Christ and His ministry. Not all of the chapters are as provocative or interesting (hence the 4 star rating), but there's something of value in each of them.

In Chapter 9, "The Turn," Keller addresses Mark 8, in which the Gospel turns from the King to the Cross. It's in Mark 8 that Jesus begins to teach that He, the King, will end up on the Cross. In this chapter, Keller also addresses the need for Christ to go the Cross and frames it in terms of the debt we owed which Jesus paid.

In the first half of the book, Keller deals with Mark 1-8 and Christ the King. But as soon as Peter makes his confession, the book, like the Gospel, deals with the purpose of Christ's coming. While the first half of Mark presents the call of Christ on us to follow Him, the second half of Mark presents a picture of all that this following Christ entails. In Chapter 11, for example, Keller deals with "The Trap" of riches and why Christianity always seems to migrate away from wealth and power (as witnessed, for example, by the growth of Christianity in Africa in the 20th century). I found Chapter 14 also particularly appealing, as Keller presents his chapter on "The Feast." In this chapter, Keller paints a compelling picture of the meaning of the Last Supper as a meal.

You might think that a more narrative or imaginative reading of the Gospel of Mark would lead to a downplaying of the seriousness of sin. But Keller manages to maintain a biblical view of sin while at the same time helping us to understand why it's such a big problem and how we must get out of ourselves to access God's salvation from it.

Throughout, Keller uses illustrations from many other works of literature, such as Tolkien's "The Lord of the Rings," George MacDonald's "The Princess and the Goblin," and C.S. Lewis' Narnia series. He also draws illustrations from non-fiction writers, as well as from movies and personal anecdotes. These all help drive home the point he is making and make the book a pleasure to read.

In spite of some more pedestrian parts, overall I highly recommend this book to Christian readers.
