Very Well Written Book on Truss Design.

This book is a more modern version of the Simplified Design series that was originally written by Harry Parker and updated by James Ambrose. Mr. Ambrose covers a lot of historical matter about trusses in this book, which is oddly helpful for me with work I do with older buildings. He covers all of the different types of trusses, and gets into detail about common timber and steel trusses.

His analysis and design sections are well written. A lot of structural engineering texts have very turgid language making it hard to decipher the simplest concepts, but Mr. Parker covers in plain every day language how to design a truss that makes the process very simple. The figures are easy to understand, and he gives easy to understand examples. What I found helpful is that he covers vertical trusses extensively and how to analyze them. Vertical trusses are very good for resisting wind loads, and this is the first text I've found to cover them specifically in such detail.

What makes this text more valuable is he covers in detail how to design the connections of trusses. With wood trusses there are a lot of factors to take into account, and he goes through it step by step. He also covers issues such as the loading of top chords of trusses from the vertical live and dead loads, which is often ignored in other texts. Finally, he gets into graphic analysis of trusses, which was done in the days before electronic calculators and then personal computers. I kind of skipped over that part.

I actually sat and read through the text in one evening, which is not something one normally can do with an engineering text. If you are designing trusses, this is a must have book for your library.

The books of the Ambrose serie generally are very good. This book is not the exception.
The Chapter 10 "Design of Steel Trusses" includes Joints in Steel Trusses (very well explained), an important aspect in the design, forgotten for the majority of the designers and structural engineers, but essential in the stability and perfomance of the a truss
In the chapter 16 reviews different forms of trusses searching the maximum efficiency.
This book is a "must have" publication .

Very nice primer on truss design and development

This book is not written by a Pulitzer prize winning author, but it is still very readable. It spoon feeds the technology well enough for an armchair understanding by any "victim" of liberal arts. I'm not sure if the technology is totally up to date because of its mid-90's publication date. But, unless you're actually an engineer or architect relying on the science that's discussed, then it's a very good product.

About the Author
William Earl Maxwell is a professor emeritus at San Antonio College, where he has taught courses in U.S. and Texas government since 1971. Throughout his career Maxwell has focused on innovative teaching techniques and improving the teaching and learning environments for students. As part of that effort, in 1975 Maxwell co-authored UNDERSTANDING TEXAS POLITICS, his first text on Texas government. He also co-authored such texts as POLITICS IN TEXAS and THE CHALLENGE OF TEXAS POLITICS: TEXT WITH READINGS. He completed his undergraduate and graduate work at Sam Houston State University.

A thirty-five year veteran instructor of political science, Ernest Crain specializes in political party competition, comparative state politics, and Texas public policy. Crain co-authored UNDERSTANDING TEXAS POLITICS, POLITICS IN TEXAS, THE CHALLENGE OF TEXAS POLITICS, and four editions of INTRODUCTION TO TEXAS POLITICS. Crain received his B.A. and M.A. degrees from the University of Texas in Austin.

Adolfo Santos is the chair of the Department of Social Sciences at the University of Houston-Downtown and Associate Professor of Political Science. Dr. Santos received a Ph.D. from the University of Houston in 1998. He is the author of DO MEMBERS OF CONGRESS REWARD THEIR FUTURE EMPLOYERS?: EVALUATING THE REVOLVING DOOR SYNDROME. He also writes about Hispanic representation in the U.S. Congress and the Texas legislature.

Highly recommend, great book!

I moved to Texas for the first time when I started going to college. I had to read this book for one of my classes and it was a very interesting book. Texas is full of remarkable people and fascinating stories. I would recommend this book to anyone that wants to learn about the history of Texas. This book also touches on modern Texas and why the republic does not like strong state government.

An interesting and unusual approach to various political philosophies as they apply to freedom within society.

My reading interests are wide and varied and when I came across this 314 page soft cover (The Art of Freedom: On the dialectics of Democratic existence by Juliane Rebentisch translated by Joseph Ganahl) book from the Vine program I just had to read it. First off, this is not an easy book to read and unless you are seriously studying political philosophy you may want to pass up this volume. This is not a beginner’s or introductory text. The author explores in depth many of the well-known philosophers and how their particular views relate to democratic free societies today.

This text is organized into three parts. The first part (An antique diagnosis of a crisis) focuses on “the provocative beauty of Democracy: Plato.” Essays includes the following: Freedom and indeterminacy, the slavery of the tyrant, the unstable Democrat, the unfree opportunist, many jobs and much trespassing, the occurrence of an inner nature or the freedom toward self and several other topics. The second part (The Ethical-Political right of irony) covers various topics on the morality of Irony: Hegel, the ethics of aesthetic existence: Kierkegaard, and the sovereignty in romanticism: Schmitt. The final part (Democracy and Aestheticization) explains the spectacle of Democracy: Rousseau, the anaestheticization of the political in Fascism: Benjamin and post-democracy and the anaesthetizing of the political: a look forward. The remainder of the book has numerous detailed notes and an index.

This is not a book for recreational reading but rather a college text book that must be studied in order to grasp the deeper philosophical aspects of political systems, ideas and principles. It also explores the ethical and morality factors in a free society. Finally, in order to better understand and appreciate this book one should at least be familiar with Plato’s Republic, Socrates, Aristotle's principles, Hegel’s Philosophy of right, and other political philosophers.

Superb!

Exceptional. It's not often that I get an opportunity to sit and enjoy such a thoroughly well presented book these days...it reminded me of my early college days when so many concepts were new (to me at least) and elicited untold hours of thoughtful contemplation. While most of us have probably spent ample time with the concept of freedom, the art of freedom is quite the twist and heralds what is to come in the following pages.

Many readers will find a great deal familiar - especially those with a passing familiarity with the works of Plato, Hegel and so forth. Yet it is the familiarity which will form the foundation for what is to come. Superbly organized, this flows in a natural manner which allows the reader to progress at your own pace. This is written in an academic style but is far from drying and boring - it invites the reader to mentally engage while presenting solid philosophical foundations for each premise presented.

A quick disclaimer...because I'm unable to read the original language, I cannot provide any type of informed discussion on the quality of the translation aside from a generic perspective. Having said that, this is exceptionally reader-friendly and 'feels" natural/native. An absolutely delightful addition to my personal library, this would make a superb text for class study as well. Should be required reading for every voter!

aestheticization in peril

This book defends the aestheticization of life in the post post modern West from those who critique it. In my way of thinking this is essentially an Epicurean way of life but with a post modern rational for it instead of the science of the ancient Greeks - though theories of the post modern may very well assume something like that as a concept of nature. What is astounding is how Juliane Rebentisch's discussion of how this aestheticization of life impacts and coincides with the type of democracy current in the West and especially in the US fits so perfectly with the current election process and most especially the Donald Trump campaign, though it is certain to continue to have relevance long after that campaign is over since the overall analysis of the main principal of democracy as freedom, even in the Platonic sense, seems so amazingly apropos. (But note the German original text was published in 2011 and of course written well before that.) For those of us that did not even realize aestheticization was a thing, and a thing long enough to be under the gun of criticism such that it needed defending this is an eye opening book.

Henri Cartier-Bresson (1908–2004) was born in Chantelou-en-Brie, France. He initially studied painting and began photographing in the 1930s. Cartier-Bresson cofounded Magnum in 1947. In the late 1960s he returned to his original passion, drawing. In 2003 Cartier-Bresson established the Fondation Henri Cartier-Bresson in Paris, one year before his death.

Amazing Reproduction of the Original

I read these reviews lamenting the horrible print quality while waiting for me pre-ordered copy to be delivered and expected to be terribly disappointed. They were so negative I was ready to return the book without opening it. Reviewers claim that the photos look like copies of copies and that HCB never would have let his work be presented this way. Because of these reviews, I though the Steidl facsimile of the original must have been blundered somehow. It was only at my fianc�es insistence that I even bothered unwrapping the book to take a look at it (she knew how excited I was about the book coming out and even offered to pay for it if I didn't like the edition).

I just took my copy out of the shrink wrap, and couldn't be more pleased. I am Thrilled with this book.

Here is some background that may be helpful. Several months ago, when I heard this book was being reprinted, I decided to see if my university's interlibrary loan service could track down a copy is the rare, valuable, original for me to borrow, to see if I wanted to buy the Steidl edition when released. I figured it was a longshot since a book this rare and valuable is risky to lend out. But the library was able to get it for me and I can tell you that Steidl did a PERFECT job reproducing it. It is literally as though you are holding a brand new copy of the original in your hands (except better, because the photos haven't faded over 50 years and had hundreds of students' hands on the pages- they look fresh as they should).

So I have to admit, I'm really baffled by the negative reviews, especially one that claims to have seen the original. If people think the photos look like copies of copies, well, that's what you would have thought of the original too. Yeah, they're not hyperglossy, but neither was the original book. End of story. It's EXACTLY what the version of the original edition I had looked like (but, again, only better: because it's new, not missing the dust jacket, and comes in a nice slipcase).

I can tell you as someone serious about photography books ( and ones from Steidl as well: I've spend lots of $ on Steidl's gorgeous editions of William Eggleston's work) and street photography itself, you should not let these negative reviews of the print quality dissuade you.

The content, of course, speaks for itself: the book is an absolute masterpiece.

So I would really advise you just see for yourself what you think. You may be disappointed if you think they will look like digital photos. But they are not now, and they never were. What they are is faithful to HCB's vision for the book.

Reproduction Faithful to the Original

I would like to second Kevin's comments on the excellent quality of the Steidl reproduction. I have the original TDM and side-by-side comparison makes clear that Steidl has done an excellent job of reproducing the original gravure print quality. The blacks are slightly darker in the original, thanks to the ability of the gravure process to lay down ink, and the original has a slightly different quality to the varnish on each image (a slight bit more gloss with the original). The Steidl edition paper is similar to the original in weight and feel (and a bit brighter than my aging original), and contrary to comments from some reviewers the 'sharpness' is fully comparable to the original (and I've never thought sharp was a big thing for HCB). Overall the reproduction yields images that look very much like those in the original.

The real issue here for many reviewers may simply a lack of familiarity with gravure reproduction. If one can get over the fact that it doesn't look like today's (truly excellent) high-end lithographic reproduction, it's possible to appreciate the subtle beauty of the result. For other examples of great gravure, see Paul Strand's La France de Profil or Robert Doisneau's La Banlieue de Paris, both of which are lovely in a way that's totally different from the printing of today's high-end photo books. Steid's version of The Americans also does a nice job of capturing the quality of the gravure first editions.

It's all a bit like arguments over whether inkjet printing looks better on matte or baryta paper. Both can be beautiful but represent different aesthetics. So don't buy this book if you don't like gravure. But if you do, or at least want an edition that is very faithful to the original, the Steidl is it.

Someone wrote: "this book is worth every penny." No. This book is worth MORE than every penny. To get it for under $100 is unimaginable. It's a fantastic book worthy of any photographer's collection.

I am so thankful I ordered this book, waited six months and landed a copy in February 2015.

I took mine to a local university and compared it, side-by-side, to the original book. Steidl produced an exacting copy down to the finest detail. Aside from being in newer condition, I'd have a hard time telling the 2015 version from the 1952 version.

There are better books featuring Bresson's work. Sure. No question. But that's like saying the newest Ford Mustang is better than the 1964 1/2 Ford Mustang. "Better" being about as subjective as it gets. "The Decisive Moment" is a classic. This cannot be argued and it belongs on any photographer's bookshelf,

Now it appears to be out of print once again. Will we have to wait another 50 years for it to be printed again? If so, I have mine safely tucked away.

"In logic, as in life, it is the obvious that most often bears emphasizing, because it so easily escapes our notice," McInerny argues in this pithy guide to applying logical thinking to everyday life. Modeled after Strunk and White’s indispensable handbook, The Elements of Style, McInerny’s primer offers valuable counsel on making a clear and effective point. He calls attention to the tremendous importance that language holds in the crafting and presentation of an argument, advising readers to "make your words as precise and sharply focused as possible" and to keep arguments, or at least their essential purpose, simple. Readers need not have a background in philosophy to follow McInerny’s remarkably comprehensible explanation of the methods used to construct a valid case, including the syllogistic argument, the conjunctive and disjunctive arguments and the conditional argument. The author also dedicates considerable discussion to the sources and the principal forms of illogical thinking, from such common ruses as begging the question and using tears as a diversionary tactic to the more ethically questionable ad hominem strategy, in which a person ignores an argument and attacks his opponent’s character instead. McInerny recommends that people hone their logical thinking skills by using them in real life situations, but perhaps one of the best ways his audience can learn to clearly express their views is by examining the crisp, articulate writing in this slender but richly informative guide.

Certainly not a waste of time, but

Being Logical: A Guide to Good Thinking

One of the stated goals in author D.Q. McInerny's preface to "Being Logical" is to in "some degree succeed in doing for the cause of good thinking what 'Elements of Style' has done for that of good writing." This book does not meet that goal. It is very doubtful that I will keep it on hand as a reference to help form my thoughts or to construct arguments. There's not enough "how to" guidance for that.

Further, many of the examples that are given do not seem to have been very thoughtfully crafted. Based on that, and also on the too-informal language that pops up throughout, one might be led to suspect that McInerny cobbled together some lecture notes for this book, but didn't make the extra effort to enliven it and strengthen it. The book actually feels like it could be the appendix or the introductory chapter to a larger, better work.

Judging outside the goal of the author, the book is not awful or misleading like some reviewers have made it out to be. It was worthwhile and certainly not a waste of time, but given the opportunity to go back and choose another book for an introduction to logic, I would. And maybe if you're reading this review, you should too.

Its a book I needed for a class

As much as I love writing detailed reviews, I cant for this. The book is worded in a way that you need to reread what you just read to semi-understand it. It over complicates the simplest things, and if I had the choice, I would never read this. But I needed it for a class, so what can you do?

Should be mandatory for those entering adulthood

Every high-schooler should have to read this. Also anyone who plans to ever vote in an election would benefit. I read this and several other books for an intro to grad school assignment. It helps to reorient your brain to the different types of fallacies and flawed reasoning/arguments that persuade so many people. Its good, simple, and is more like a handbook for reference.. Its an easy read that may be too easy or rudimentary to some long-time students, but its still good.

About the Author

Barry Hyman is Professor of Mechanical Engineering and Public Affairs at the University of Washington, Seattle, where he currently is Leader of the Design Faculty Group. In addition to his several decades of teaching and research on engineering design, Professor Hyman conducts research on the energy and environmental characteristics of manufacturing processes. He is Associate Editor of Energy—The International Journal, published by Elsevier Science.

Professor Hyman is a Fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. He received the ASME Ralph Coates Roe Medal in 2000 for his outstanding contribution toward a better public understanding and appreciation of the engineer's worth to contemporary society. He previously served ASME as Vice-President for Government Relations and Vice-President for the Northwest International Region. His other awards include the ASEE Centennial Medallion for significant and lasting contributions to engineering education and the ASEE Chester F. Carlson Award for Innovation in Engineering Education. In 1995 the Puget Sound Engineers Council named him Academic Engineer of the Year.

The basic structure of this book is unchanged from the first edition, but much of the existing material has been enhanced and new material has been added. Chapters 2, 3, and 10 have undergone the biggest changes. I have reorganized Chapter 2 to clarify the steps in formulating design problems. Much of the material in Chapter 3 has been updated to reflect the rapidly increasing role that the Internet has assumed as a source of technical information. In Chapter 10, the treatment of global optimization has been rewritten and new sections have been added on optimization software and on integer programming.

In keeping with the ABET mandate for integrating social and professional issues into engineering design education, I have added a new section on life-cycle assessment to Chapter 1 and expanded Section 4.2 on the role of engineers in society and Section 4.9 on engineering-government interaction. In addition, detailed case studies of engineering ethics and professional liability have been added to Chapter 4. Further, I have included extended vignettes on the social and environmental context of specific design problems in Chapters 7, 8, 9, and 10.

In response to comments from students and reviewers, I have added several worked-out example problems to every chapter. And in keeping both with ABET's increased emphasis on multidisciplinary work and the original intent of the book (see Preface to the First Edition, p. xi), I selected these example problems to provide a more balanced treatment of design concepts across all engineering disciplines.

Most of the graphics have been redone to provide a more consistent professional style to line drawings throughout the book. Also, I have inserted dozens of additional line drawings and photographs to better illustrate concepts discussed in the narrative and to break up long stretches of text. In addition, I have added over 70 new end-of-chapter exercises.

A Web site ( www.prenhall.com/hyman ) has been established for this edition. The site contains hundreds of PowerPoint� slides that can be downloaded, including a slide for every figure and table in the book, plus key discussion topics in outline form.

For those faculty that use Mathcad�, a Mathcad Electronic Book can also be accessed from the Web site. This is an expanded, hyperlinked, and interactive version of the Solutions Manual, including all of the PowerPoint files and a set of 50 design projects. It also contains many more exercises than appear in this book; and when instructors change the values of numerical parameters that are part of the problem statement, Mathcad automatically regenerates the solutions. All solutions reside in a password-protected hidden region of each exercise file, so instructors can give students access to the exercises with or without the solutions. Every design-project file is similarly interactive and has a detailed "solution" contained in a password-protected hidden region. All exercises, PowerPoint slides, and projects can be reached by hyperlinks in the Electronic Book's Table of Contents. All exercises and projects are coded with respect to engineering discipline, level of technical sophistication, and design topic.

Many students and colleagues pointed out errors in the first edition. Despite my best efforts to eliminate all errors before the book went into production, I assume there will be some errors also detected in the second edition. As they are discovered, they will be posted in an Errata Sheet that will be maintained on the book's Web site.

I appreciate the feedback I have received from many users and reviewers of the first edition. Their comments have been extremely valuable in developing the revisions included in this edition.
