Excellent Solr Resource and Tuning Guide

This book is an excellent treatise on how to use and tune Solr for various uses. I really enjoyed how the author struck a good balance between hands-on specifics and details while still covering the breadth of the application needs. In particular including details like how to tune and handle language differences (a necessity typically overlooked in most technical books) was very appreciated. Given the depth covered by the author developers of every level of experience with Solr should find a lot of value in this book. I had moderate experience with Solr when I picked this book up and definitely learned several useful techniques to add to my toolkit.

Aye, ye got to love those pirates....

This story centers around Lady Isabel Ashton and Captain Kent Carlton, both whom you met in The Reliance. Isabel has been shunned by her family because of her illegitimate son, Frederick. Kent has searched everywhere for Lady Ashton (the woman he could not forget). Finally he runs in to Richard Sawkins, a nobleman who tells him of Frederick existance. Frederick is then kidnapped and Isabel is beside herself. Kent shows up and vows to help her find her/their son. She is apprehensive about him helping but agrees feeling she has no other choice. Once aboard his ship she finds that he has made a big effort to see to her needs. Kent treats her with the upmost respect and kindness. Through the story you see both hearts changing. Can Isabel ever trust the pirate who ravished her and caused her to loose her title and wealth? Will Kent be willing to give up everything for Isabel and Frederick?

The story is a page-turner and will keep you up long into the night to find out what happens next. In the Reliance you saw a little change in Captain Carlton but... in the Restitution you see a change in Kent that makes him a worthy hero. I fell in love with him. You can feel the love he has for Lady Ashton and their son.

One thing I was hoping for was to see Merrick and Charlisse again but they were only mentioned in the beginning.

You could read this as a stand alone book but I would highly recommend you read the other two first for the complete story. The Redemption, The Reliance and The Restitution.

Great work MaryLu. I look forward to her next book The Falcon and the Sparrow due out Summer of 2008.

An Amazing Conclusion to an Amazing Series

Isabel and Kent are both characters that were introduced in the previous Legacy of the King’s Pirates books. Kent was always quite the scoundrel in the previous books but in The Restitution we find him very changed, and changing for the better! Isabel is haunted by her past. Having been ravished by a pirate and left with a child, Isabel is all but alone in the world. When her son is kidnapped, she must look to Kent, the father of the child, to help her retrieve her lost child.
This was probably my favorite of the three books. I loved the story of Merrick and Charlisse but I loved Kent and Isabel’s story just a little more. I loved that we could see the change over Kent throughout the series. I found myself being drawn to Kent, despite his past. This whole story was filled with unexpected twists and turns that you didn’t see coming. This book will bring you on an adventure that will keep you intrigued right up to the very end. It was a wonderful ending to the series and the only thing I’m disappointed with is the fact that the series is over.

Another for the can't put down list from Mary Lu Tyndall

I cannot believe Mary Lu got me to like Kent! I never thought that would be possible.

Lady Isabel Ashton is the main character in this one. You hear Merrick and Charlisse mentioned one time in the first few chapters of the book. But all that is said is they are living in North Carolina now. I was really upset at them not returning. I thought early on - I was not going to enjoy it as much for in the last book I was not fond of Isabel and Kent as characters.

So at first I started the book with a chip on my shoulder. But as soon as she got the story going I was hooked. Once again, Mary Lu wrote a book that I could not put down.

This book had two situations unfolding. The story of Kent and Isabel and one of Hann seeking revenge for his/her brother. What a suprise twist on that character.

If you read the first two, this is one you have to read. And it will not let you down.

The only thing that bothered me about these books were the cover art. All three girls looked different on the front. So if we assume the first book had Charlisse on it, and this last one Lady Isabel, which one was on the second cover? It did not resemble either of the others. And the guy on the second also did not fit with the other books. But that was about all I did not like about these three books.

Book of the century

In India people say there is no building like Tajmahal. In civil engineering, I say there is no book like Soil Mechanics in Engineering Practice. Karl Terzaghi, the father of soil mechanics, had a vision, a vision that he lived by, nurtured and preached. Very few have personified Terzaghi's vision better than co-authors, Peck and Mesri.
Permit me to say, no book in this century has had more influence on the rise of civil engineering than has Soil Mechanics in Engineering Practice. Since its first publication in 1948, the book has guided a multitude around the world, spawned countless other books, and set a stage of research for a geotechnical generation gone by, there is, and yet to come.
The library of a geotechnical engineer cannot be said to be complete without a copy of this book.

Great contribution to civil engineers

As a structural engineer student I decided to take the class of soil mechanics at UIUC to understand better how soils behaves because at the end structures work in it.

My professor was Mesri and he talked a lot of how did he write part of the book, very nice person and great professor.

The point is that the book is extremely clear even for someone not to familiar in this topic as me, and the references that it has provides a wide range of options to even understand better this important topic as civil engineers.

The book is not intended to be just a student book, it is more a scientific explanation of what soils is and at the same time how to apply several data collected for guarantee safe geotechnical designs. It makes emphasis in the soils particles nature to explain soils properties. This is not a beginners book but can be used with other simpler book of geothecnical engineering to really learn about the topic.

For professional engineers I definitively recommend it as a handbook for the application of soils engineering.
