BENZODIAZEPINES!!!! AVOID THEM LIKE THE PLAGUE. This book carefully takes the American way of dealing with stress, anxiety, and depression apart. If you or one you love are suffering from these, read the book. Don't allow any excuses to get in your way Don't pass go. Get the book and read it. The US is in desperate trouble with these ailments. The pharmaceutical industry, with many good people, and many good intentions, is poisoning and addicting our people. More later. This is a good start.

Prevention and Treatment

I wish American doctors and authors would be as bold as these authors. Plant and Stephenson open this book with the telling of their own mental health battles. With a few exceptions, like Richard O' Connor for one, American Ph.D.'s and M.D.s write and lecture like they don't have ills of their own. They prefer to hide behind their degrees, unlike these authors.

Jane and Janet, did not offer excuses and they kept their stories brief; yet long enough for me to relate and offer me hope. Accuracy and brevity are the hallmarks and the genius of this book.

A Must-Have Resource

As a writer myself, I have four resource books on my desk at all times, and this is one of them, along with The Negative Trait Thesaurus, The Emotion Thesaurus and Webster's Dictionary. As a writer, this is a must-have. It is well thought out, comprehensive and perhaps best of all, easy to use. Unlike a typical thesaurus, there's no going back and forth from one entry to another similar entry to another and another. Everything you need is right there.

Plus there are articles about how to create characters readers will connect with, how needs and morals influence a character, what a positive trait is and how it develops.

Writers, you NEED this book. Readers, you will also benefit from reading this book-it will help you recognize great writing from the not-so-great. I highly recommend it.

Don't List, Describe.........

It is difficult to like and root for, or dislike a character, that has nothing to them but their name.
Readers want to know, why and what, makes the bad guy like he is, and why is the heroine different.

ONLY 5 STARS BECAUSE AMAZON WON'T LET ME GIVE MORE ...

Every writer needs both the Positive Trait Thesaurus and the Negative Trait Thesaurus. They go together. Add in the Emotion Thesaurus and the great downloads and extras these talented writers give you on their website (which add up to another fabulous book on their own) and you probably won't need too many other books on the craft of writing. A good dictionary and a Synonym finder and you are all set.

I have bought all three "Thesauruses" and loved them so much I bought all three for my Kindle too so I can have them on the move and when travelling. These Thesauruses are exceptionally well organised and contain huge amounts of information in a concise and practical format.

You could just leap in and pick a handful of traits to apply to your character(s) and they would still be better off than when you started. However, taking the time to read through the "users guide" chapters will add so much to your understanding of how to craft truly memorable characters that it is well worth the time invested to do this. Then use the listings to pick and choose traits and counter-traits and the ways in which they would possibly be exhibited to start building a team of people that will resonate with readers. Also use the listings to develop conflict between characters in a psychological way by giving each person traits that would "irritate" or "confuse" the other - much more subtle than the standard good guy VS bad guy.

I can't rate these books highly enough. I know I'm going to be buying them again every couple of years as they become tatty and worn out with daily use!

About the Author

Neil A. Campbell (1946-2004) combined the inquiring nature of a research scientist with the soul of a caring teacher.� Ove his 30 years of teaching introductory biology to both science majors and nonscience majors, many thousands of students had the opportunity to learn from him and be stimulated by his enthusiasm for the study of life.� While he is greatly missed by his many friends in the biology community, his coauthors remain inspired by his visionary dedication to education and are committed to searching for ever-better ways to engage students in the wonders of biology.

Eric J. Simon is a professor in the Department of Biology and Health Science at New England College (Henniker, New Hampshire). He teaches introductory biology to science majors and nonscience majors, as well as upper-level courses in tropical marine biology and careers in science. Dr. Simon received a B.A. in biology and computer science and an M.A. in biology from Wesleyan University, and a Ph.D. in biochemistry from Harvard University. His research focuses on innovative ways to use technology to increase active learning in the science classroom, particularly for nonscience majors. Dr. Simon is also the author of the introductory biology textbook Biology: The Core and a coauthor of Campbell Biology: Concepts & Connections, 8th Edition.

Jean L. Dickey is Professor Emerita of Biological Sciences at Clemson University (Clemson, South Carolina). After receiving her B.S. in biology from Kent State University, she went on to earn a Ph.D. in ecology and evolution from Purdue University. In 1984, Dr. Dickey joined the faculty at Clemson, where she devoted her career to teaching biology to nonscience majors in a variety of courses. In addition to creating content-based instructional materials, she developed many activities to engage lecture and laboratory students in discussion, critical thinking, and writing, and implemented an investigative laboratory curriculum in general biology. Dr. Dickey is the author of Laboratory Investigations for Biology, 2nd Edition, and is a coauthor of Campbell Biology: Concepts & Connections, 8th Edition.

Kelly Hogan is a faculty member in the Department of Biology and the director of instructional innovation at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, teaching introductory biology and introductory genetics to science majors. Dr. Hogan teaches hundreds of students at a time, using active-learning methods that incorporate technology such as cell phones as clickers, online homework, and peer-evaluation tools. Dr. Hogan received her B.S. in biology at the College of New Jersey and her Ph.D. in pathology at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. Her research interests relate to how large classes can be more inclusive through evidence-based teaching methods and technology. She provides faculty development to other instructors through peer coaching, workshops, and mentoring. Dr. Hogan is the author of Stem Cells and Cloning, Second Edition, and is lead moderator of the Instructor Exchange, a site within MasteringBiology� for instructors to exchange classroom materials and ideas. She is also a coauthor of Campbell Biology: Concepts & Connections, 8th Edition.

Jane B. Reece�has worked in biology publishing since 1978, when she joined the editorial staff of Benjamin Cummings. Her education includes an A.B. in biology from�Harvard�University�(where she was initially a philosophy major), an M.S. in microbiology from�Rutgers�University, and a Ph.D. in bacteriology from the University�of�California,�Berkeley. At UC Berkeley and later as a postdoctoral�fellow in genetics at�Stanford University, her research focused on genetic recombination in bacteria. Dr. Reece taught biology at�Middlesex County�College�(New Jersey) and�Queensborough�Community College�(New York). During her twelve years as an editor, she played a major role in a number of successful textbooks. She is the lead author of Campbell Biology,�Ninth Edition and Campbell Biology: Concepts & Connections,�Seventh Edition.

Four stars because I don't like chemistry. But that's only one chapter. I got this book for my Bio class in college. It looks interesting and I'm looking forward to learning more. This loose leaf edition comes in a 3 ring binder and is cheaper than the others. But it is heavy!

Worth it, even if you bought the first APW book. Helps you to take action!

To be completely honest with you, I had my doubts about this new book when it was out for pre-order. I thought, “What could possibly be covered now?” Between the 2011 guidebook, the website’s oft-updated front page and growing archives, and downloadable spreadsheets available online, I wondered if it was going to be a redundant piece of fluff. I bought my copy to see if it was worth suggesting to my couples (I'm a wedding photographer), or warn them not to waste their money. So for me to read it, cover to cover, and have my skepticism blown away actually speaks really highly of this book. It’s useful! It’s smart! It’s handy!

See, the first book, A Practical Wedding: Creative Ideas for Planning a Beautiful, Affordable, and Meaningful Celebration, gets you into the *headspace* of planning a wedding. For many of us, our wedding is the first wedding that we’ve ever had to plan. Figuring out how to approach wedding planning, then feeling right about our decisions, is what the original APW book is all about.

This companion book, A Practical Wedding Planner (“APWP”), coaxes you into actually taking action. Meg starts by asking you to think of your wedding’s “thesis” — not colors or theme, but the takeaway that you want your guests to feel after the wedding is over. (Best dance party? Amazing spiritual experience? Warm, casual vibe?) Then build your wedding around that thesis.

While the planner, at around 9�7″ (notably bigger than the novel-sized 2011 guidebook), isn’t quite large enough to feel like it’s an essential replacement of a wedding-planning binder, it feels more like a notebook and has wide margins so you can scribble all in it (there are some dedicated spots for you to fill in your plans, but for the most part, the book tracks out to-do’s). It’s divided into sections that you can jump to depending on where you are in your planning process: budgets, venues, catering, etc.

The best part about this book is that it can be scaled up or down depending on the type of wedding you’re going to have: Meg doesn’t assume that you’ll be having a giant wedding, a tiny one, or that you’ll hire all of the vendors that most wedding-planning books recommend you to hire. She outlines DIY projects, describes the risks and rewards of DIY, and suggests how to get the most out of DIY planning. It’s a little bit like a choose-your-own-adventure book. Want to do your own makeup? Here’s the path to take. Interested in arranging your own flowers? Here is what you need to look out for.

Where APW used voices from married couples, describing how they created an authentic wedding instead of going with the traditional or expected, APWP interviews wedding professionals. These seasoned vendors explain how to get the best deals from different vendors (hint: it’s not always about negotiating, but by understanding what is typically included in the industry norm and what are additional fees), as well as the best questions to ask the vendors you’re vetting to work your wedding.

Some of the best stuff is in the nitty gritty: there’s a chart of flowers, when they’re in season, their price ranges, and good substitutes. There’s an alcohol calculator. There are sample timelines, sample ceremonies of many religions and cultures, and even guidelines on how to address your invites in a “gently feminist” way.

In short, should you get this book if you’re planning a wedding?

Resounding YES.

Refreshing and practical planning advice

As soon as I received my book after pre-ordering, I basically skimmed and read the whole thing! It's an easy but valuable read where you can focus on what's important to you right now in the planning process, and come back to the other details later when you need them. I'm a follower of the companion website (APW) and was pleased that this book contains new information as well as classic advice in a really organized manner. This book offers advice in a more open-minded, and less-prescriptivist tone compared to other popular planning sources.

Also, I love the small design details (the illustrations and pop of blue color), charts, and spreadsheets in this book! Very pretty and practical as a soft-cover book, similar to a fiction novel in terms of number of pages. It was easy to write in the book to highlight things or work on the few worksheets in the beginning of the book. My fianc� and I had a good time filling them out and thinking about our wedding priorities. This book is for anyone getting married; not just brides.

Definitely would recommend this book; it would make a great gift to engaged couples!

As a low budget bride with a love of elegance and tradition

Helpful, concise, and keeps you sane amidst expectations. As a low budget bride with a love of elegance and tradition, but also strong feminist values and a secular lifestyle this guide (and her book) have been monumentally helpful. Get this, and only this. Ignore the Knot and all the other crazy talk out there that will have you crying in a ball if you don't have the gazillion dollar budget they all assume you do. Just buy this already. Really, really.
We started at page one and made our mission statement, which has been super helpful. I wish I had had this planner the moment we got engaged, it would have saved me a lot of stress and worry over other people's expectations. Normally I am a calm person! I read her blog and her book and was worried this would be redundant. A tiny bit. In just the right ways. Well worth every cent.
