Good Lesson, well worth the price

The information contained in this lesson is not new--for an advanced player--however the book and the DVD complete with backing tracks is well worth the price. I was able to get through the book in a weekend and have a few new ideas. I have made the exersizes part of my warm-up routine as they will have you moving across and down the neck in a logical manner.

The first few pages show how to work the blues scale up and down the neck using the basic pentatonic boxes and slides--diagonal approach. Next the author shows the three-note per string approach to using pentatonics which has a more modern and less "boxy" sound than trying to work it all in one position.

Then he continues on with the aeolian, dorian, phrygian, locrian, harmonic and melodic minor, and other more exotic scale work. What I like about the examples is that the author not only works them at various tempos but also shows to work them backwards, a powerful tool to increase your musical vocabulary. Having the DVD makes all of the difference as it shows the author playing the examples according to his convictions which tends to bring life to the book.

The Best Commentary on Ecclesiastes?

Before praising such a controversial book highly, I ought to point out how non-partisan I
am. Professor Gordis is my arch-enemy in an old religious war. I wouldn't drink his
wine or eat his food, and if I ever met him, we would probably come as close to a fist-
fight as our aged dignities would allow. In addition, I attempted several times to read
one of his books on has own religious philosophy, and always died of boredom before
page 8.
So much for entertainment. Now to get down to business.
Ecclesiastes is
one of the most difficult books of the Bible to understand, and in fact, one of the most
difficult books of philosophy ever written. The reaction of most modern commentators
has been to emend the text so much that there's really nothing left to either edit or
comment on, as Prof. Gordis also notes. Gordis himself manages to understand the
Masoretic text by placing it in context, and by reading it as a whole, making no
assumptions in advance as to what it should say. He solves many of the contradictions
by pointing out that the Biblical wisdom books often present a statement not as a simple
truth, but as a subject for discussion or refutation, or even ironically. He solves the
problem of Koheleth's own personal philosophy, his knowledge of the evils of this world
and lack of knowledge and comfort from another, by making him an existentialist. It
works, but for an explanation, you'd better read the book.
Gordis' attempts at dating
and identifying Koheleth are less convincing. His argument that we know of very few
philosopher-kings doesn't work: statistical arguments break down completely long
before N=1. In addition, the totality of the evidence is that the courts of David and
Solomon were centers of philosopical thought. As to his evidence for the date
of the book from a few Persian linguistic influences, there are many American books
which include the verb "to boomerang", but they weren't written after the conquest of the
United States by Australian aborigines. Again, his sample is too small. His etymological
researches are a pleasure, though, in a book which greatly gains from them: look, for
example, at 'hevel', 'amal' and 'anah'.
His new translation aids greatly in understanding
the book; printing it facing an unvowelled Masoretic text was a smart move. The
bibliographical work is also excellent.
(This review is based on the old Schocken edition. Even if you had to hunt for that, it would be worth the trouble and expense.

A masterful study of a thought provoking Old Testament book

Robert Gordis has managed to compile a study on the Book of Ecclesiastes which is both fascinating to the novice and challenging to the wider read. The research that has gone into this work is reflected by the number of authors who continually turn to it in their quest for a greater understanding into both the origin and purpose of the famous Old Testament book, and can be found in the bibliographies of all the most pertinent articles and scholarly books written on Ecclesiastes since.
This is a must for anyone who wishes to find out more about the quintessence of Old Testament piety and scepticism as found in Ecclesiastes with its famous cry "Vanity, vanity all is vanity".
A breathtaking one volume achievement which takes the reader through the pre-history of the book and allows one to make ones own informed interpretation for today. I have yet to find anything to match it.

Very well written book and gives lots of guidance and input to an aspiring Project Control Manager, as well as provides a comprehensive check list for a PCM currently working on EPC Projects.This book contains a variety of information, methods and procedures for new PCM to understand the significance and importance of his role on a project and how he/she should interface with the Project Manager. A PCM is the eye and the ear of the Project Manager, conveys critical information about the Project to PM on a timely manner, so that decision could be made to avert any cost increase or delay. About the Author
Lucy Adams is on a mission to help organisations bring their human resources departments into the 21st century. Through her agency, Disruptive HR, she aims to provoke the HR community into creating new ways to support businesses in today’s complex and ambiguous world. In doing so she challenges leaders and HR professionals to learn from sources as varied as management theory, consumer organisations, marketing, neuroscience, and the latest thinking on motivation and reward. She also addresses how businesses can deal with public scrutiny, and advises them on leadership and change.
Lucy was HR director at the BBC during one of its most turbulent periods. Responsible for all aspects of employee relations, reward, training, and development, she also reduced the corporation’s management by over 30%. In her five-year tenure Lucy witnessed four director generals come and go, oversaw the move to the Salford site, and coped with numerous and very public crises, including executive payoffs and the Savile scandal. Prior to working at the BBC Lucy was group HR director at Serco, the government services organisation; this came after a period working for the law firm Eversheds. Along with her business partner, Lucy runs workshops and consults on many topics within the HR arena. She specialises in helping HR and other business professionals to step back from their old assumptions about motivating people and to see more creative and effective ways of engaging employees.

HR Disrupted should be required reading for everyone in HR and related fields (including suppliers). Lucy is a recovering HR executive and she outlines a NEW and quite reasonable path forward, despite the "burn the bridges" title, which is justified by the need to "wake up" willing HR leadership. You too will find delight in her abundant British charm laced throughout this HR call to arms. I give it 6 stars (on a 5 star scale)!

Over the next generation, these institutional differences had fateful consequences for African-Americans and their integration into American politics. Owing to its strong national structure, Social Security quickly became the closest thing we have to a universal, color-blind social program. On the other hand, public assistance--especially Aid to Families with Dependent Children (AFDC)--continued to treat African-Americans badly, while remaining politically weak and institutionally decentralized.

Racial distinctions were thus built into the very structure of the American welfare state. By keeping poor blacks at arm's length while embracing white workers, national welfare policy helped to construct the contemporary political divisions--middle-class versus poor, suburb versus city, and white versus black--that define the urban underclass.

Excellent Book

This is a superb book, one that makes important contributions to the study of race, politics, and the welfare state. I'm not surprised that, per the other review, graduate students had no trouble tearing this fine work down, since many graduate students seem to feel that is the point of a seminar. But scholars in this area recognize the significance of this work, it is very well-cited and deserves to be.

Academic embarassment

Lieberman's Shifting the Color Line is a failure in academic writing. His thesis - that federal agencies are capable of running racism-free welfare - is not only unsupported by his evidence, his evidence is itself racist in the exclusion of all other races besides white and black. In short, I've seen this book torn down within half an hour by a small seminar of graduate students. Any serious academic would do well to pass on reading this book.

Hannis Arc, working on the tapestry of lines linking constellations of elements that constituted the language of Creation recorded on the ancient Cerulean scroll spread out among the clutter on his desk, was not surprised to see the seven etherial forms billow into the room like acrid smoke driven on a breath of bitter breeze. Like an otherworldly collection of spectral shapes seemingly carried on random eddies of air, they wandered in a loose clutch among the still and silent mounted bears and beasts rising up on their stands, the small forest of stone pedestals holding massive books of recorded prophecy, and the evenly spaced display cases of oddities, their glass reflecting the firelight from the massive hearth at the side of the room.

Since the seven rarely used doors, the shutters on the�windows down on the ground level several stories below�stood open as a fearless show of invitation. Though they frequently chose to use windows, they didn't actually need the windows any more than they needed the doors. They could seep through any opening, any crack, like vapor rising in the early morning from the stretches of stagnant water that lay in dark swaths through the peat barrens.

The open shutters were meant to be a declaration for all to see, including the seven, that Hannis Arc feared nothing.

Extremely Disappointed

First off, I am (was?) a huge SoT fan and like most everyone else, enjoyed the earlier books and tolerated the last few. I just finished The Omen Machine and quite frankly, I think I'm done with Richard and Kahlan (and TG as well). Don't get me wrong, I loved these characters early on, but with every installment, they get weaker and more one dimensional.

But even so, this one surprised me. A couple of the reviews already posted hit it on the head. ALL the characters are mere shadows of what they used to be. The dialogue is very weak, stunted and repetitive, and absolutely nothing exciting happens in the whole book. Seriously, not one thing.

What happened to the awesome power of Richard Rahl, when in a rage looses his power to blast through massive doors, blowing them from the hinges and reducing them to splinters skittering across the floor? What happened to 'calling the target' and 'dancing with death'? Now Richard just steps aside, "raking his fingers through his hair", wondering what to do. In this book, Richard's power and presence as a War Wizard and The Seeker of Truth is gone, and he comes off as just a guy with a cool sword.

The rest of the characters come across the same. Bewildered and ineffectual. It's a shame because there used to be so much depth to these individuals, but in this book they are just taking up space. They're just not the awesome characters we've come to love from 'Stone of Tears', 'Blood of The Fold' and 'Faith of the Fallen'. Those books are among the best Richard and Kahlan novels. I'm afraid this one falls far short.

Goodkind Fails to Engage

As a strong fan of the Fantasy Genre, and an avid supporter of the Sword of Truth series, I found this book vastly disappointing. There are a great number of reasons not to read this book. A few of such are as follows-

1 - The Circus of Stupidity
The whole short book comes off as a carnival show meant to display how everyone in the whole world who isn't Richard's close friend is an absolute moron. Every character that they encounter is viciously, unforgivably unintelligent. But it doesn't stop there; even the characters that we have grown to love (Nathan, Zedd, etc) have lost their edge, wit, and depth. These characters have suddenly lost the ability to grasp complicated concepts, and it is just sad.

2 - The Televised Evangelist
I am among the few who actually enjoyed some of the heavy preaching in the SoT series, but this book takes it over the top with endless snippets of proselytism that somehow completely lack the substance to actually engage, amuse, or teach anything at all. It is as Terry Goodkind is trying to hammer us over the head with his philosophy, but doesn't seem to have the time or inclination to follow his preaching through to conclusion. It only serves to cause frustration.

3 - The Ink is Fading
The text of this book has no impact. It has none of Terry Goodkind's usual depth or tension, and feels as if it had been written by someone completely different. It doesn't pack a punch. There is no spark. The writing is repetitive. The dialogue is boring. The words fall flat. No matter how much I tried, I just couldn't get myself to care about anything that happened.

TG doesn't have the story anymore. He's just filling pages with tired rhetoric playing off the fact we all used to love his characters.... hell I still love his characters and wish he would go ahead and write a book about them. You know.. the witty ones that invoked reactions from me while I read the the books.. the ones that made my eyes water and my chest heave, the ones that made me literally throw back my head and laugh. The ommmminous knowledge of a mord-sith and that if there are magics like that in this world WHAT ELSE WILL MR GOODKING HAVE IN STORE FOR US! or OMG the mud people, I laughed so hard when Richard slugged one of them. Just so many great memories from the series.

Apparently he has crap in store for us though. I used to be a really big fan, I've recommended and got numerous friends to start/buy this series.. Then I read the last 3 books, and was terribly underwhelmed. But hey, I finished the series, I was mostly content, and had every intention of reading any book Mr. Goodkind put out. I'd enjoyed huge swaths of the SoT series and felt prepared to give him a chance in any universe. Seems fair? I thought so.

Anyway, one of the 5 star reviews hit it on the head. It's like TG has turned this into Harry Potter. Lamest War Wizard EVER. Richard never does anything even moderately interesting with his almighty powers. I don't want to read Harry Potter or anything remotely like it, I don't want things spelled out for me to the point a moderately intelligent 6 year old could puzzle it out..

AND SOME WIT? Can we have some wit? ...

I'd still recommend you checkout the series, the first half of it is amazing (And Faith of the Fallen was a real gem)... but I wouldn't bother reading anything after Chainfire. All it does is make me angry.

Must Read For Any MD/Researcher/Engineer Worth Their Salt

"The Body Electric" (1) and "Cross Currents" (2)These books are the basis for electro-medicine good/harmful effects. They (the first one especially) provide cogent explanations on the cancer
mechanisms; bone/tissue/organ regeneration and electromagnetic effects. One can deduce how wrong and primitive mainstream thinking is in these matters.

I think these books should be required reading by any MD/researcher/engineer worth her/his salt.
Incidentally Dr. Becker, far ahead of his time, is the king of stem cell research, however, he was hounded by the mainstream as his research would have put much of the wrong headed & self serving research funding in jeopardy and he hardly ever gets credit for his ground breaking work.

Electric current, nerves, and dedifferentiated cells form blastama that will different into tissue, bones, and organs. Becker discovered negative charged electric current after limb injury. He observed tissue repair for CNS, Brain, Bone, and heart in Salamander specimens. The heart of regenerative technology is the ability too create artifical dedifferentiation. Current causes the puromycin blockage to be lifted. The cells differentiate into new tissue and bone structures in the damaged area. The electric forces unlock the repressed genes. Mammals followed a similar pattern, Blastemas form around electrodes flowing with low current and redifferentiation proceed into tissue regeneration. Becker used Rats too test out the idea. The rat had regrown a shft of bone extending from the severed humerous, new muscle, and new nerve. At least ten different kinds of cells had differentiated out from the blastema. The regeneration was not complete but offered promising potential for complete regeneration in the future.

By mid-1978 Becker had successfully treated fourteen osteomyelitis patients with positive silver mesh wire. Five of them had healed nonunions. The silver mesh wire had stimulated bone-forming cells, cured stubborn infections from all kinds of bacteria, and stimulated healing in skin and other soft tissues.

Cartiage damage from arthritis. Becker reasoned that since cartiage was made from one kind of cells they could get it to regenerate. A orthopedic surgeon removed the cartilage layer from one side fo the femar at the knee of a white rabbit. They then implanted silver-platinum couplings into the bone and extending to the region where the cartilage was removed. All rabbit great improved repair. However, two of the rabbits completely healed with hyaline cartilage just like the original material.

The Lazus heart involved the surgical removal of the scar tissue, placing an electrod at the damage site, injecting embroyonic stem cells and sealing the region with a tissue patch. Beck seemed hopeful that one day the procedure would be used to heal massive heart damage.

Spinal cord injury involved debridement of the cord ends, injecting cutured embryonal ependymal cells, and a ectrode to DC generator, close the wound an allow regenerating between the cord ends.

I rated this book with 3 stars because I was slightly disappointed with it. My preconception was that it would explain how to build & use a device that would cure body afflictions using micro currents of electricity. It didn't. It was interesting to read about using electricity to grow back a leg & foot on a salamander though. It wasn't shocking news to me reading that this Dr. wasn't getting any encouragement from mainstream Dr's or the pharma industry. If you'd like to read about healing with electricity, I'd suggest you researching the writings of Hulda Regher Clark PhD, ND.
