This is one of the best books I've ever read about memorizing scripture. It not only is a practical guide, but the author makes it very clear that it's not just memorizing, but it's knowing the Word and thus knowing God more intimately. I highly recommend it!

When you're hungry for God

Recently, I spent a few days fasting and praying to help me hear God as I made an important decision. I left that time with a deeper desire to just know God. After evaluating my spiritual practices and lack of time to do much more, I felt that memorizing Scripture consistently would give me the opportunity to meditate on God throughout the day. As a teen, I had memorized chapters of the Bible for competitions, and I grew a lot through the time I spent in the Word.

I bought the book hoping it would help me as I started memorizing again. I loved how she emphasizes that the purpose of memorizing is to develop a closer walk with God. It's not about becoming the Bible know-it-all or even to have the perfect verse for other people just when they need it. It's just to help you spend time meditating on God, allowing Him to speak to you.

While dealing with such spiritual topics, the book is also very practical. She gives tips on where to memorize, what to memorize, how to prepare your materials to help you memorize, and so on. She suggests a verse a day, and she shows through her life how easy that can be - reviewing while you're in the shower, driving to work, or waiting for your kids at school. The book includes a day-by-day guide through memorizing a few Bible chapters, in which she asks questions and makes points about what the passage teaches to help you get in the habit of really meditating on the Word and not just memorizing it.

The book is geared to people who have little experience memorizing and meditating on the Bible, which is good. It's also written as if everyone reading it is a mother. As a result, I didn't read every word or use her suggested chapters, but I found a lot of inspiration and some great tips in the book. Regardless of where you are in your walk with God, this book will inspire you and give you a number of practical ways to make memorizing and meditating on Scripture a part of your life.

Three Reasons Making Pom-Poms Is More Important Than Anything Else

1. Alli and Cami, my two best friends, and I saw the Crestdale Heights pom-pom girls for the first time when we were in third grade. It was love at first sight! The sequined outfits, the hats, the pom-poms, and the music. We looked at each other after the first routine and knew why we'd all been born: to be POM-POM GIRLS.

Since then, we've made up exactly seventeen different routines. We've talked our moms into buying us five different matching outfits. And we've downloaded ninety-eight songs we can use for pom-pom routines.

All three of our families, especially our brothers (we each have one), wish we'd never seen those pom-pom girls. But the three of us know that was the day we found our DESTINY.

2. Everyone who's anyone is a pom-pom girl.

At Crestdale Heights Middle School, pom-pom girls are practically celebrities.

(Okay, Crestdale Heights isn't really a middle school; it's really Crestdale Heights K through 8. But the little K through 5 kids are NOT allowed in the middle school hallway, so it's sort of like a real middle school.)

On game days, pom-pom girls get to wear their uniforms to school. It's like Oscar night on the red carpet, and the pom-pom girls are wearing the best designer in town.

3. BOYS.

Boys notice pom-pom girls. (Even seventh- and eighth-grade boys.) And once they notice them, they talk to them, they hang out with them, and eventually...(Okay, I'm not really sure what comes next, but who cares?!)

Being popular isn't everything...

Abigail can't wait to start middle school. She and her best friends Alli and Cami (aka AlliCam) spend the whole summer before sixth grade reading all the latest teen magazines and practicing pom-pom routines in anticipation of tryouts. When they become pom-pom girls, they believe, they'll be popular and life will be PERFECT!

Yet unexpectedly, tragedy occurs...AlliCam make the squad but Abigail is just an alternate. Suddenly AlliCam have lots of inside jokes with the other poms, and Abigail's a lonely outsider.

At the same time, a class assignment pairs Abigail with Gabby, the class outcast. Nobody really knows anything about Gabby except that she lives with only her older brother...and she's WEIRD. Nobody wants to be friends with Gabby, and Abigail's scared if people see them hanging out together, they'll think Abigail's weird too.

But as sixth grade progresses, Abigail begins to realize being part of the popular crowd isn't all it's cracked up to be...and that Gabby may in fact be a much better friend than any of the pom-pom girls, or even AlliCam.

Cavanaugh's quirky writing style (Abigail, the self--proclaimed Queen of Lists, writes all her journal entries in list form) is bound to catch the eye of young readers, and even help attract reluctant readers. Abigail's worries and descriptions of day-to-day life in middle school ring true.

Synopsis- Abigail Walters was entering the sixth grade, and, along with her best friends Alli and Cami, can’t wait to become a Pompom Girl. Then everything goes wrong. Alli and Cami get the same homeroom, and have the same teachers. Abigail has the meanest homeroom teacher in the school. When that teacher assigns a project where you write letters to an assigned person in the class, Abigail gets paired with Gabby – an outcast-y, “weird”-type – and Abigail dreads it. But what if she actually starts to like Gabby? And starts to realize that her friends aren’t as nice as she thought they were?

What I liked-This was a great book about choosing what you should do, over what you want to do. At first, I wasn’t sure about the writing style of the book, it started off as list after list after list, but then I figured out that the book was written like a notebook, and I found myself really liking it. Abigail tells her story though lists and small paragraphs (for example: 3 Reasons I Know I Was Born To Be A PomPom Girl, and What I Wanted To Say, But Didn’t). The style really grew on me. Abigail has always wanted to be one of those popular “PomPom Girls” (I am figuring that is a cheerleader), but first, she doesn’t get any classes with her two best friends, and then, in her Language Arts room, she gets partnered with the biggest “loser” in 6th grade and she pretty much thinks her life is over. I didn’t really like how Abigail blatantly calls Gabby (her partner), a “loser” in her notebook. I really disliked her at first, but I guess that is the point of the story. ;) Abigail goes through a natural, yet significant, character change. As a reader, I really enjoy that in a book.

About the Author
Catherine Twomey Fosnot is the Founding Director of Mathematics in the City and former Professor of Education at The City College of the City of New York. She has twice received the "best writing" award from AERA's Constructivist SIG and she was the recipient of the "young scholar" award by Educational Communication and Technology Journal. She is the lead author of the Contexts for Learning Mathematics series as well as the Young Mathematicians at Work series.

Maarten Dolk is a researcher and developer at the Freudenthal Institute for science and mathematics education in the Netherlands. He is involved in the development and research of in-service and multimedia in-service materials for teachers, staff developers, and teacher educators in a number of countries. He has been a collaborating partner in Mathematics in the City since its inception and is co-author of the first three books in the Young Mathematicians at Work series.

This is a must read for any k-2 teacher. Primarily focused on K-2 teachers this book offers a direct and explicit document to base investigative math. It also gives clear research into the development of young mathematicians (the why). It is a short and concise book that gives you the framework to change your mind-set on teaching math. There is new support materials available as well. Read it and raise your teaching to the next level.

Constructing Fractions, Decimals, and Percents by Fosnot and Dolk is a wonderful book for teachers who are trying to teach fractions and their relationship to decimals and percents. A very hands-on approach that really had me thinking about math differently. The first problem was dividing three subs for 4 children, 3 subs for 5 children, 4 subs for 5 children, and 7 subs for 8 children. Try it with your class and you will definately want to buy this book.Young Mathematicians at Work: Constructing Fractions, Decimals, and Percents

If primary schools deeply engaged the message in this book, radical changes would be seen in middle school students' ability to work algebraically, use integers, manipulate data, and engage mathematically with a wide variety of topics. I'm looking forward to reading the next book in the series. Very well written and full of meaningful classroom examples.
