Foundations of Software Testing, by Aditya P. Mathur

Basic Approach

Foundations of Software Testing is the premiere example-based text and reference for establishing sound engineering practices in test generation, selection, minimization and enhancement, for software projects ranging from the most simple to the highly complex, to those used by government agencies such as the FAA. Foundations of Software Testing also covers data-flow based adequacy and mutation-based adequacy, which are the most powerful of the available test adequacy criteria. It distills knowledge developed by hundreds of testing researchers and practitioners from all over the world and brings it to readers in an easy to understand form.
Test generation, selection, priortization and assessment lie at the foundation of all technical activities that arise in a test process. Appropriate deployment of the elements of this strong foundation enables the testing of different types of software applications, including Object Oriented systems, Web services, graphical user interfaces, embedded systems, as well as properties relating to security, performance, and reliability. With over 200 examples and exercises of mathematical, step-by-step approaches, Foundations describes a wide variety of testing techniqes, including finite state models, combinatorial designs, and minimization for regression testing.

About the Author

Aditya P. Mathur is Professor and Head, Department of Computer Science, at Purdue University. He is one of the founders of the department of Computer Science at BITS, Pilani, India where he designed, developed, and taught the first course on microprocessors to undergraduate students from his seminal book Introduction to Microprocessors. Dr. Mathur has been a prolific researcher with over 100 published works in international journals and conferences. His key contributions include a multilingual computer, the saturation effect in software testing, a theory of software cybernetics, and novel techniques for the estimation of software reliability.

Students, practitioners, and researchers will find this book an excellent source of simple to advanced techniques to use and improve their knowledge of and expertise in software testing.

Praise for Foundations of Software Testing:

"The book describes techniques in a lucid manner with great clarity with the help of numerous examples. Illustration of the techniques through appropriate examples makes the book very easy to study and assimilate the deep concepts and thus a unique book in the area of software testing.", Ashish Kundu, Graduate Student, Department of Computer Science, Purdue University.

" As a teacher of software testing and validation, I had to search for books that can be used as references in my class and I found that "Foundations of Software Testing" is the best one for at least the following reasons:
- It covers a wide range of concepts related to software testing.
- It introduces the different concepts smoothly with examples illustrating them. This helps students a lot in understanding the ideas behind each concept introduced.
- The exercises at the end of each chapter test if the students understood the concepts properly and as expected.
- The references of the book and the discussion at the end of each chapter both give the reader an opportunity to learn more. The slides are well prepared and organized. This facilitates the task of the professor when lecturing.", Professor Abdeslam En-nouaary, Concordia University.

"This book teaches software testing as a science and not as an art. It not only presents an engineering approach for handling different testing tasks but, also sets up the formal framework for the presented technique. Thus when compared to other books on testing it can be readily used as a resource by both practitioners and researchers which in my view is the real strength of this book.
Initially I thought that there is still much that can be added to this book, but seeing the list of chapters that would be added in subsequent volumes I believe that for the complete set of volumes it would be very difficult to suggest drastic improvements.", Ammar Masood, Graduate student, Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Purdue University.

"So far, I like your book. Plenty of definitions and terminology that is clearly presented." Christine Ayers, undergraduate student, UT Dallas.

An Excellent Text Book for Software Testing
By Eric Wong
The University of Texas at Dallas is one of the few institutions in USA, which has a Software Engineering Program offering BS, MS and PhD degrees. One of the core courses for our students (both undergraduate and graduate) majoring in Software Engineering is "Software Testing, Verification, Validation and Quality Assurance." Being an instructor for this course, I have long searched for an appropriate textbook for my students. An ideal book should not only cover different testing principles and techniques but also provide good examples with detailed explanations to help students better understand the material. Moreover, it should have sufficient content at different levels (introductory, intermediate, and advanced) so that instructors can select what is the best for their classes. The book "Foundations of Software Testing" by Professor Aditya Mathur is one of the best books that covers all the concerns described above. Moreover, being a researcher in the software testing area with ten years of industry experience, I have also found that this book can serve as a very useful reference for testing practitioners and help them perform their work. I strongly recommend this book to students who want to learn software testing, to instructors who teach classes in testing, and to programmers and testers for whom testing is part of their job.

A great textbook for software testing
By Vahid Garousi
I have used this book as a software testing researcher and also an educator for over a year now. Many people across the globe, including me, believe that this book by Aditya is the best textbook for teaching testing.

I have used the book in my undergraduate "Software Testing" and my graduate "Advanced Software Testing" courses. Both my students and me love the preciseness, comprehensiveness and detail presented in this book. The informative and to-the-point examples and end-of-chapter exercises add to its value.

Furthermore, I've recently had the chance to look at and quickly compare three recent books on testing: the current book by Aditya Mathur, Ammann and Offutt's "Introduction to Software Testing", and Naik and Tripathy's "Software Testing and Quality Assurance: Theory and Practice". A systematic comparison of them would require much more effort, which has not been feasible for me. However, while I believe all three books are well written by leaders in the field, I think the current book gets my first rank from the teaching perspective and its good style to presenting the testing concepts in order, its modern terminology and good depth of detail.

Last but not least, for the testing educators using this book, I have a surprise and that is: Aditya and I have collaborated since the summer of 2008 in preparing a (partial) solution manual for this book, the URL for which is available from Dr. Mathur's Purdue (book) website. Interested educators may contact me with their credentials and I would send them a copy of the solution manual.

In closing, I admire Aditya's effort in having made a good contribution to the collection of resources emerging on software testing, which I believe is entering its golden age, and the software industry is investing more and more on this very important software engineering discipline. I recommend the book to all testers. Happy testing!

Best text book on software testing
By Joao Cangussu
Foundations of Software Testing is a comprehensive book that can be used both for an undergraduate and a graduate course on testing. The book covers all important aspects of testing in great detail; examples are always present and are easy to follow. The book also has a good set of exercises at the end of each chapter. Though it is a text book (definitely the best one among the few real text books on testing) it is also a very good reference book to people in industry. I strongly recommend the book.

Review
"Truly something novel and useful among the current books on contemporary leadership. Bolman and Deal have again created a book that is both a conceptual gem and a handy practical reference. The Wizard and the Warrior will make us think carefully again about leadership in general and about our own style in particular."
—Walter F. Ulmer Jr., lieutenant general, U.S. Army (Ret.), former president and CEO, Center for Creative Leadership

"With The Wizard and the Warrior Lee Bolman and Terry Deal have followed up the insights of Reframing Organizations with a grounded and entertaining set of very useful stories. The numerous examples of historical and contemporary figures and their life stories serve to bring leadership ideas alive in a way that few books achieve. A great and useful read!"
—Len Schlesinger, vice chairman and chief operating officer, Limited Brands

"Rarely do scholars attempt, let alone succeed as Bolman and Deal have done so palpably, to encompass the polarities of leadership. They have thrown their arms around the inspirational, on one hand, and the tough, practical, and sometimes brutal, on the other. Through wonderful stories, they convincingly illustrate the real challenges and possibilities of living life grounded by larger purposes and the courage to interrogate reality. Anyone practicing leadership, or dreaming of doing so, should read this book."
—Ronald A. Heifetz, King Hussein Bin Talal Lecturer in Public Leadership co-founder, Center for Public Leadership, John F. Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University; author of Leadership Without Easy Answers and Leadership on the Line

"Terry Deal and Lee Bolman have established the ‘gold standard’ for looking at leadership. In The Wizard and Warrior they show how to integrate the two sides of leadership. It is about fighting the good fight, but not losing sight of the magic-it is about making the word flesh. This is a must-read for anyone who cares about becoming a better leader."
—Paul D. Houston, executive director, American Association of School Administrators

"Warriors and wizards! Craxy metaphors for leaders? No! Compelling insights that Bolman and Deal have distilled compelling insights from organizational life, illustrating them with fascinating stories. They convinced me that we as leaders can achieve our mission and care for our people more effectively by embracing the reality of combat and magic, of power and spirit, in our organizations. If you’re a good leader, this book will make you better."
—Colonel Larry R. Donnithorne, author, The West Point Way of Leadership: From Learning Principled Leadership to Practicing It

"I find The Wizard and Warrior a fascinating and enjoyable read. The premise is exactly what it set out to be, a prod and a guide to trumpet the true legacy of leadership. The self-inventory guidelines stimulate an interesting integration of fantasy and myth (through Harry Potter’s Dumbledore, Merlin of King Arthur’s court, and Tolkein’s Gandalf) with the realities of business tycoons such as Oprah Winfrey, Herb Kelleher, and Mary Kay Ash, as well as the political wizard of U.S. presidents. The book provokes the reader to understand the immeasurable potential of the wizard and warrior in each of us that can create change and challenge."
—John Keola Lake, kumu-in-residence, Chaminade University of Honolulu, Hawai'I, head of Hawaiian traditions

"This book is a must-read for all who are pursuing the journey of leadership. It provides in-depth insight into passion and power, and how they are the very essence of leadership. It will be of great value for all those in leadership positions at J.E. Dunn."
—Terrence P. Dunn, chief executive officer, J.E. Dunn Construction Company

From the Inside Flap
Why a book about wizards and warriors as models for leadership? Because, as Peter Drucker once said, everything you learned is wrong—at best, it is misleading and insufficient. You typically learn in school, workshops, and seminars that if you can manage the work and serve the people, you have what it takes. It's not true. Maybe you have enough stuff to be a pretty good manager, but it takes a lot more to be a good leader.

The Wizard and the Warrior gives leaders the insight and courage they need to take risks on behalf of values they cherish and the people they guide. Great leaders must act both as wizard, calling on imagination, creativity, meaning, and magic, and as warrior, mobilizing strength, courage, and willingness to fight as necessary to fulfill their mission.

Best-selling authors Lee Bolman and Terrence Deal present the defining moments and experiences of exemplary leaders such as David Neeleman (CEO of Jet Blue), Mary Kay Ash, Warren Buffet, Anne Mulcahy, Thomas Keller (head chef of French Laundry), and Abraham Lincoln—all of whom have wrested with their own inner warrior and wizard. These engaging, realistic case studies are followed by commentaries that will raise questions and suggest possibilities without rushing to resolution or simple answers.

Armed with this book's expanded repertoire of possibilities, the reader can become more versatile and imbue work and life with power and passion.

A Strong Article Stretched to Book-Length
By Timothy Haugh
Friends of mine who have read other leadership books by Bolman & Deal tell me that they have a lot of insights into leadership and that their others books are excellent. I'm sure my friends are right. It is clear from this book that leadership is something they have studied extensively and know much about. Unfortunately, I didn't feel this book brought out the best in them.

The metaphors they have chosen for this book, wizard and warrior, are good ones. They bring out how a great leader must not only be able to fight but must also be able to work magic. They talk about the qualities of a great warrior (heart, mind, skill and weapons) and great wizard (wisdom, soul, icons and rituals). They talk about how warriors and wizards can go right and wrong (toxic, relentless and principled warrior; authentic, wannabe and harmful wizard). They give examples of their meaning by examples from history and business. They make their point.

On the other hand, the book has some series flaws. First, they flog their point to death. This 200+ page book could have easily been slashed to a short article and made the same points better. Second, the bulk of this book is anecdotes. As a rule, I enjoy stories about historical figures but here there are so many of them and they are often repetitive. I most enjoyed the stories about business leaders since I was unfamiliar with many of these but I found myself wishing they'd get on with it already. Third, though I found their highlighting of the need for a great leader to be both warrior and wizard, they didn't offer much in the way of practical suggestions for those who need to develop one or the other or both of these qualities. Certainly, becoming conscious of your strengths and weaknesses as a leader is important but, once you learn about your weaknesses depression awaits if you aren't guided to some solutions. Bolman & Deal are a bit short on solutions.

Ultimately, this book is harmless and may be inspirational for some people. It is short enough and fluff-filled enough to get through quickly and easily. It offers some important insights. But, as Bolman & Deal are clearly experts in leadership, I expected their book to lead me forward with something meatier and more useful. Maybe this is to be found in some of their other books, but I didn't find it here.

Lead with passion and power...but also with principle and faith
By Robert Morris
Here is a synthesis of the core concepts in Lee Bolman and Terrence Deal's book: "The wizard and the warrior inhabit two distinct but overlapping worlds. The warrior's world is a place of combat, of allies and antagonists, courage and cowardice, honor and betrayal, strength and weakness...The wizard inhabits a realm of possibility, magic, and mystery. The wizard's strength lies not in arms or physical courage, but in wisdom, foresight, and the ability to see below and beyond appearances. The wizard brings unshakable faith that something new and better really is out there...The greatest leaders move and out of both roles, even if they are more comfortable with one or the other."

Bowman and Deal carefully organize their material in terms of three warrior roles in business, the military, the American presidency, and basketball coaching, respectively: Toxic (e.g. Al Dunlap, Hermann Goering, Richard Nixon, and Bobby Knight), Relentless (e.g. Bill Gates, Ulysses S. Grant, George W. Bush, and Mike Rzewski), and Principled (e.g. Warren Buffett, George Marshall, Abraham, Lincoln, and John Wooden); and in terms of three wizard roles within the aforementioned categories: Authentic (e.g. Liz Claiborne, Norman Schwarzkopf, Ronald Reagan, and Phil Jackson), Wannabe (e.g. Ken Lay, William Westmoreland, Woodrow Wilson, and Rudy Tomjanovich), and Harmful (e.g. Frank Lorenzo, Hermann Goering, Warren Harding, and Dave Bliss). Throughout their narrative, they rigorously examine exemplary warriors and wizards, building a case for their observation that "the greatest leaders move in and out of both roles, even if they are more comfortable with one or the other."

More specifically, the greatest leaders combine the strengths and virtues of Principled Warrior and Authentic Wizard in that they "wield both sword and wand, know how to create as well as defend, accept reality but will challenge it because they see unfulfilled possibilities, learn by sensing and intuiting, are both strategists and visionaries, and combine the power of commander and the courage of a champion with the wisdom of the counselor and the magical powers of the shaman." But they are by no means perfect. However, as Bolman and Deal suggest (and I agree), we admire them because they somehow overcome their human weaknesses to achieve extraordinarily difficult goals. "As is clear from examples like Abraham Lincoln and Nelson Mandela, you need not like war to be a warrior." Bolman and Deal also point out that, the warrior heart "must be found in a cause important enough to justify the costs of combat. For many leaders, heart develops over time through experiences that test their courage and strength in the face of rigorous challenge and worthy competitors."

In this context, I am reminded of the fact that Mohandas Gandhi greatly admired Henry David Thoreau's concept of "civil disobedience" and applied its principles so effectively that India was eventually able to obtain its independence. Gandhi was assassinated. Martin Luther King, Jr. studied the life and work of Gandhi and applied what he learned to his non-violent campaign against racial inequality. He was also assassinated. In certain respects, both he and Gandhi were warrior leaders (i.e. they possessed exceptional intuition, recruit thousands to join their cause, inspired them to persevere rather than be overcome, and skillfully negotiated the alliances needed) but they were also wizard leaders (i.e. they were wise in the ways of the world, recognized the importance of symbols and emblematic events, encouraged a strong link between words and deeds, and were visionaries of what could and should be). Admirable human beings.

In this volume, Bolman and Deal provide dozens of other examples of men and women who also found a balance of the strengths and virtues of both warrior and wizard but it remains for each reader make her or his own determination of which balance is most appropriate. When concluding this brief commentary, I presume to share the fact that there have been times when I have had to be more warrior than wizard; other times when I feel the need to be more wizard than warrior. Such situations are when achieving the right "balance" has been most difficult for me. Thanks to Lee Bolman and Terrence Deal, I now feel better prepared to do that.

Those who share my high regard for this volume are urged to check out any of Warren Bennis' books (notably Geeks & Geezers and the more recently published Leading for a Lifetime, both co-authored with Robert Thomas) as well as Bill George's Authentic Leadership and the more recently published True North, Jean Lipman-Blumen's The Allure of Toxic Leaders, James O'Toole's Leading Change and The Executive's Compass, Martin Linsky and Ronald Heifetz'Leadership on the Line, Heifetz's Leadership Without Easy Answers, and Winning co-authored by Jack Welch and Suzy Welch.

From School Library Journal
Grade 1-4–Seven-year-old Bean likes stomping in puddles, climbing fences into neighbors' backyards, and playing tricks on her older sister, Nancy. She wears dresses as seldom as possible and avoids big books. Her new neighbor appears to be a quiet, orderly girl who sits on her front step day after day reading tomes. The two seem to have nothing in common, and Bean is not interested in getting to know Ivy, despite her mother's prodding to make friends with the nice girl next door. Then Bean gets into trouble, and Ivy helps her out. She discovers that Ivy is practicing to be a witch, and when they decide to cast a spell on Nancy, their friendship is sealed. With echoes of Beverly Cleary's Ramona series, this easy chapter book will appeal to children who are graduating from beginning readers. The occasional black-and-white illustrations highlight the text and provide visual clues. The characters are appealing, the friendship is well portrayed, and the pranks and adventures are very much on grade level.–Eve Ottenberg Stone, Cooper Lane Elementary, Landover Hills, MD

From Booklist
*Starred Review* Gr. 1-3. In the tradition of Betsy and Tacy, Ginnie and Geneva, come two new friends, Ivy and Bean. Ivy has just moved in across the street from Bean, who wants no part of her. She thinks Ivy looks dull, always with her nose in a book. Bean, on the other hand, is a spark plug; she's full of tricks, especially ones that can be played on her older sister, Nancy. But the day Bean pulls a trick that goes wrong and Ivy comes to her rescue, a friendship is born. The deliciousness here is in the details, with both girls drawn distinctly and with flair. Ivy, who at first seems to be a dud, has aspirations to being a witch, which is dangerously intriguing; Bean's spunky way of talking and acting (there's a classic moment when she wiggles her butt at Nancy) will make readers giggle. Even with all the text's strong points, what takes the book to a higher level is Blackall's artwork, which captures the girls' spirit. A chapter from the second book in the series, to be published in this fall, will whet readers' appetites for more Ivy and Bean. Ilene Cooper

My 7-year-old loves it, but I have a few misgivings...
By Thinking Out Loud
*** Warning: This review contains spoilers! ***

First off, I have to give this book praise because it is the first chapter book that my 7-year-old first grader read all on her own, cover to cover. She got it as a gift, and though she was at first indifferent to it, once she picked it up, she read the entire book in one sitting. She is now very excited to go back and read book one - this book is the second in the series - and the rest of the series, too. The reading level is exactly appropriate for her, and clearly she finds the content amusing.

I want to say, too, that I really liked Ivy and Bean's teacher, Ms. Aruba-Tate. I thought she was kind, yet firm, and just what an elementary school teacher should be.

So, why only 3 stars? Basically, I don't like the way the two girls behave. I'm probably over-thinking it, but here goes...

Sure, Ivy and Bean's antics appeal to young readers. But I just can't get over the worry that maybe my daughter will pick up some bad ideas, with disastrous results. Yes, Ramona Quimby (whose books I love) behaved badly, too, but usually, by the time she got to be school-aged, she was well-intentioned, though sometimes misguided or misunderstood. Ivy and Bean, on the other hand, cause trouble even though it seems like they should know better.

Early on in the book, I was appalled that Bean physically tackled another student to the ground and then smashed plums into his hair - at school! Okay, I can see the humor in the situation, and in the book, Bean and the other student were simply told to "work it out." Yet, in these days of hyper-awareness regarding bullying, most schools have a zero tolerance policy, and if something like that happened in real life, Bean would be sent to the principal's office for sure, maybe even suspended. Bean also uses phrases like "shut up" - which I work hard to get my kids NOT to say - and she cuts her sister's hair in her sleep. Ivy, though sweet and quiet on the outside, misuses her active imagination and tells a tall tale at school about a ghost in the bathroom, eventually leading to another girl literally being scared to tears. She does end up feeling bad about getting in trouble, yet she doesn't learn the lesson about not spreading false stories. She continues to adhere to her ghost story, causing even more trouble. In the end, she basically gets away with her antics, never having to take responsibility for the mess she made in the bathroom.

Another issue I have with this book is that I think it unnecessarily exposes young readers to ideas they may not be ready for. First of all, there is this talk of ghosts and death and graves. I actually didn't mind it so much, personally - I know my daughter can handle that kind of talk - but I can imagine that maybe there are other first graders who might not be ready for a book about a ghost. Second, the girls at one point want to make a blood oath. Even though they didn't go through with it, I'm not sure I'm entirely comfortable with the idea that my young daughter now knows that some people will actually consider purposely making themselves bleed just for fun. Finally, when Ivy makes her ghost-begone potion, she finds that "ponie" is an ingredient, but she doesn't have a "pony", so she glosses over it. Now, I am a mother who encourages my daughter to look up words she doesn't know. Luckily, my daughter doesn't use Google on her own yet, but one quick search tells me that "ponie" is slang for a "sexual female being that dances in a weird yet shexual [sic] manner". "Shexual" is apparently another slang word that means especially sexual. Not exactly the types of words I want my first grader exposed to...

I ended up spending a lot of time talking with my daughter about the difference between "book life" and "real life", and how things that happen in book life are entertaining and funny, partly because they are things we would NEVER do ourselves in real life, or else we'd get in REALLY big trouble.

In the end, I am allowing my daughter to read the rest of the books in this series, but I plan to read the books, too, so I can talk to her about specific concerns, if any more should arise.

This book exemplifies the the way a book should not be written. The examples, writing techniques and homework problems in this book are extremely difficient. Numerical mistakes seem to be everywhere in this book. The examples are far from real world application. Very little theory about reinforced concrete is in this book. AVOID AT ALL COSTS.

Book has far too many errors
By A Customer
This book has some useful information. However, like all of Dr. Nawy's books, it is very poorly written and contains far too many errors to be considered a useful text. For reinforced concrete, MacGregor (4th edition) is a much better investment. For prestressed concrete, try Collins & Mitchell.

Students Watch Out!
By A Customer
This book portrays concrete design in a cookbook fashion with little emphisis on actually understanding the material. The explinations that are given are wordy and not clear. While this book might be considered a good refrence book, I would not recomend it for students.
