Peck, Ecology Book Description The spatial dimension—the interplay between environmental heterogeneity and individual movement—is an extremely important aspect of ecological dynamics. Ecologists are investing an enormous amount of effort in quantifying movement patterns of organisms. Connecting these data to general issues in metapopulation biology and landscape ecology, as well as to applied questions in conservation and natural resource management, however, is not a trivial task. One of the main impediments to a theoretical/empirical synthesis in the field of spatial ecology is a lack of a single source describing and systematizing quantitative methods for analyzing and modeling movement of organisms in the field. The goal of Quantitative Analysis of Movement is to provide such a source for empirical ecologists interested in quantifying movement in an ecological context. But the book goes beyond a simple compendium of existing approaches. It presents a general and coherent framework for studying and modeling movement that melds together individual-based simulations, reaction-diffusion models, and empirical curve-fitting approaches. The quantitative approaches discussed in the book are extensively illustrated with case studies selected from a wide variety of organisms, including plants (seed dispersal, spatial spread of clonal plants), many kinds of insects (such as butterflies, beetles, and ants), and vertebrates (fish, birds, and mammals). This book is aimed at active researchers and graduate students working in spatial ecology, including applications in conservation biology, pest control, and fisheries. Because analysis of movement patterns has to be approached with an explicit model, the text contains a significant mathematical component. However, all efforts have been made to make it not too intimidating to an empirical ecologist. In chapters directly focusing on data analysis mathematical details have been either placed in boxes or banished to the appendix. In addition, the appendix provides a popular account of the mathematical aspects of diffusion and random walks, models that are of particular relevance to modeling ecological movement. In general, the exposition of mathematical ideas assumes that readers have studied calculus at the college level, although some exposure to differential equations would be helpful.

About the Author
Peter Turchin was trained as a theoretical biologist, but during the last fifteen years he has been working in the field of historical social science that he and his colleagues call Cliodynamics. His research interests lie at the intersection of sociocultural evolution, historical macrosociology, economic history and cliometrics, mathematical modeling of long-term social processes, and the construction and analysis of historical databases. More specifically, he investigates two broad and interrelated questions: what general mechanisms explain the collapse of historical empires? And how did large-scale states and empires evolve in the first place? What are the social forces that hold together huge human conglomerates, and under what conditions they fail? Turchin uses the theoretical framework of cultural multilevel selection to address these questions. Currently his main research effort is directed at coordinating SESHAT—a massive historical database of cultural evolution that will be used in empirical tests of theoretical predictions coming from various social evolution theories. Turchin has published c.200 articles in peer-reviewed journals, including >10 in Nature, Science, and PNAS. His publications are frequently cited and in 2004 he was desginated as “Highly cited researcher” by ISIHighlyCited.com. Turchin has authored five books. The most recent include Secular Cycles (with Sergey Nefedov, Princeton, 2009), War and Peace and War (Plume, 2005), and Historical Dynamics: Why States Rise and Fall (Princeton, 2003).

Excellent Practical Reference

I wrote my Master's thesis on the movement of grasshoppers and almost wore this book out! It became my bible. While I was writing up, you'd always see me with it under my arm. It addresses all of the major movement models from an applied standpoint. The original papers are rarely useful if you wish to actually apply the model to your own research. This book is written more like a text than a review, but is still very thorough mathematically. If you're doing research on movement or are just interested in mathematical models in ecology, this book is a must have.

Very good, but...

Peter Turchin's "Quantitative Analysis of Movement" is the best (only?) available synthesis of techniques appropriate for analyzing movement patterns. Turchin addresses general concepts, techniques for measuring movements, movement models (mostly diffusion-based), techniques for analyzing movement paths, and mark-recapture techniques. Be aware, however, Turchin's analysis is more appropriate to displacement and redistribution questions and less suited for those interested in inferring motivation from movement trajectories.
This is an intensely mathematical treatment, so be prepared. Turchin is kind enough to provide a special appendix, "Diffusion for Ecologists," for those with relatively weak mathematical backgrounds (like myself). Not easy to understand but well worth the effort.

Incredible Factual Fictional Account Of Events Behind D-Day!

This extraordinary historical WWII thriller is the fictional account of a true story. "Plan Fortitude" actually existed. It's goal was to influence the decision making of the German High Command by supplying their agents and other Nazi information sources with disinformation. The men who conceived and executed the plan reported directly to Winston Churchill and few were privy to it, including the British and American Secret Services. The intelligence involved was and still remains one of the war's best kept secrets and without its successful implementation the Normandy invasion would have failed. Most of the men and women who gave their lives so that the plan, and thus the invasion, would succeed will never be recognized for their valor and patriotism. Without their sacrifices the world would be a very different place today.
Larry Collins, co-author of "Is Paris Burning?," another fictional factual account of the last days of the Nazi occupation of Paris, takes the reader deep into the world of espionage, deception and betrayal that paved the way for D-Day. The Allies knew that Hitler had enough tanks and troops placed strategically in France to overwhelm the Allies and prevent an invasion of the continent. Their best bet for success was to lead Hitler and his generals to believe that the invasion at Normandy was only a preliminary to the major event which would take place a few days later near Calais. Thus Hitler would keep the bulk of his forces in reserve for the shadowy Calais invasion, which was never to come.
To pull-off this deadly game, with the highest of stakes at risk, imaginary armies, barracks, vehicles and buildings were constructed - all resembling stage props from close-up, but not from the air. Cryptographers, spies, counter spies, double and triple agents were employed, and sometimes betrayed, tortured and killed by the Gestapo for the good of the Allied cause. Catherine Pradier, a highly intelligent and very beautiful woman of half French, half British parentage, wanted very much to do something to actively serve both her countries. Her godfather, a British peer, was able to pull the necessary strings to grant her wish. He would never have done so had Catherine not possessed tremendous strength of character and courage. Catherine was trained to be "dropped" into Occupied France and assist in the sabotage of France's German-run arms industry and cause as much chaos behind German lines as possible. At best, she could hope to do her job successfully. Worse case scenario, she would be captured, tortured and killed or deported to a German concentration camp. The British government's position was clear, "Women are entitled to join in the defense of our common beliefs as are men. The war is total, not restricted to men alone." And, in fact, women were better able to move around Occupied France than men. They were less suspect and they couldn't be swept off the streets and shipped to Germany for forced labor. Catherine's job was to function as radio operator and courier for a French resistance chief. The contact who first meets Catherine when her Lysander plane lands in a French field is an agent, code name Paul. His history of espionage and counter espionage is too complicated to do justice to here. The two are immediately drawn to each other, but clearly their professional duties and obligation to their country come before everything else.
Many of the large cast of characters are historical figures: Winston Churchill, Adolf Hitler, Dwight D. Eisenhower, various generals, government officials, etc.. The research that Mr. Collins has done is phenomenal and makes the novel read like a journalistic account at times. The fictional characters are no less intriguing and some do take their point of departure, according to the author, from actual characters who did exist. The roles they played, the work they did, are similar to the work done by their real life counterparts in the war.
This is one of the best works of fiction I have read about WWII. I simply could not put this book down. The characters have depth and the events they were swept up in are thrilling, intense and terrifying. I was left with a feeling of disquiet when I finished the novel, thinking of the real men and women involved in the actual subterfuge, never knowing the critical importance of their jobs and efforts. Individually their stories are heartbreaking. However, without them the war could have easily been lost. Larry Collins brings all of this home in "Fall From Grace."

A great novel about WW2 and D-Day

If you like WW2 novels, Larry Collins' FALL FROM GRACE is a book to check out. Collins wrote the book in the 1980s, and died recently, but he has a long record of published best sellers about historical events. In this novel, he explores the incredible events surrounding D-Day in WW2 and the amazing efforts the allies took to conceal the invasion date and location from the Germans.

The novel is centered around Catherine Pradier, who the British send into Nazi occupied France during the days leading up to the Normandy invasion. The British want to use her. The Gestapo want to find her. The American wants to help her. Catherine is a great character as is her lover Paul, a French Resistance member responsible for running spies in and out of France at remote landng strips. Stromburg is great as the brutal Gestapo agent who thinks he has everyone fooled. But the best part is the historical context of the espionage that traded hands and changed the course of history.

WWII novels are great because they are about a romantic time, about a period where there was a clear cut right and wrong. Collin's writing is detailed, and at times jumbled as he switches character viewpoints almost every other paragraph. Still, it was easy to follow and a fascinating historical read. Another novel I'd recommend on the subject is Daniel Silva's THE UNLIKELY SPY, or several Ken Follett novels, including THE EYE OF THE NEEDLE.

This book is almost a Roman a clef. There are a couple of key changes that an SOE buff like myself would spot. But they just make for a better story. I've been bitten by the SOE bug and have recently read several good books on the subject, especially pertaining to SOE(F) section. Larry Collins has told a great story. He uses enough tradecraft, telling details, and real events to good effect. He get his research and story telling just right. In the past I've found most historical novels as not worth the effort. Why read some novelist's pale effort to cash in on real red-blooded history. The writer usually can't deliver the goods. This novel is an exception to that rule.

i've read it 3 times and still refer to it often

I must admit, this book is DEEP. The first time I read Hamlet's Mill, I was confused, but my interest was sparked. The second time, I sat in awe as I mentally organized the content. The third time, I got it. This book is not for the casual reader, but for one that is ready for a shift in his way of thinking about astronomy, history and mythology. Hamlet's Mill focuses on the symbolism of Old World mythology and the transmission of knowledge through archaic language. Refering to mythologies from Sumer, Egypt, China, Japan, Iceland and MesoAmerica, it is an indespenseable addition to anyones library interested in the transmission of knowledge through symbolism. Although not organized in a very systematic way, it is by far the most comprehensive book so far written on such subjects. Main themes include the Precession of the Equinoxes, gods as constellations, World Tree as Earth's axis, Deluge as the shifting of the visible sky and much, much more. The info along with the fairly new science of Archeoastronomy should, and one day will, bring about a paradigm in thought about the notions of early civilizations and their knowledge of the heavens in realation to man on Earth.

The Reader will find that this book is quoted in the bibliography of many if not all recent books concerning the origins of human civilisation and the extent of knowledge possesed by our ancestors, that it has almost become a bible to modern researchers in this field. However, upon reading, it is not hard to see why this should be.
The authors show compelling evidence that myth was a way of handing down complex information in easy to manage packages within stories, and that modern man has lost all understanding of the true nature of the myth. They also boldly state that the majority of this information pertains primarily to the mechanics of celestial movements and the precessional cycle.
However, it can be at times a very heavy text and can indeed be hard to understand upon first reading, but perseverence is most rewarding. At times the text is interupted by periodic quotes of German, Latin or French which, if one does not know the language can cause the reader to feel that he/she has missed some major point of the argument. Having been published in 1969, this book is beginning to feel its age especially with the help of modern authors explaining many of its main arguments in a much more simple and effective way.
It is an excellent book, and one that you may go back upon in future to study again and again. However, it is not advised for the casual reader, and most definately not for any one with a less than passing interest in myth.

Amazing treatment of mythology as coded archaic astronomy.

I found this book to be an amazing analysis of world mythological systems. The authors are two historians of science that make a convincing argument (in my opinion) that
myths and mythical stories are, in fact, how archaic astronomy had been past from generation to generation. They
reinterperet catastrophic mythical events as reference to the precession of the equinoxes. Mythical personage (Gods, Titans, Dragons, Heroes etc.) from China to Ancient Egypt to Greece to Meso-America are shown to be, in fact, referencing constellations and their positions as these changed due to the precession of Earth's axis over centuries.

Moreover, the authors discuss myths from linguistically, culturally, temporally distinct societies and show the astonishing commonality of names, events, and motifs.
They make a cogent argument that the knowledge base of archaic people was far deeper and wider; that the archaic people have had empirical knowledge of the precession of equinoxes-a knowledge that requires at least a couple of hundred years of continuous observation to arrive at-and that they encoded their knowledge in the language of myths. This was knowledge for the elect and unlike our contemporary sciences it was not for everyone.

In addition, the authors claim that these myths are tatters of an archaic World-View that placed man in an orderely universe of change. A world view whose echoes may still be heard in the Illiad & Odyssey, Shahnameh,Timeaus, Mahabaharata, and Nihon-gi.

It is remarkable that this book, first published in 1968, has not made any waves in those circles that value such
understanding. It is also remarkable that how much more convincing the author's arguments have become in the light of the discovires chronicled by E. C. Krupp in his marvelous
volume "Echoes of the Ancient Skies".

I shall never again look at the myths in the way I used to
look at before reading this book, i.e. as just-so stories.

About the Author

The late J.J. Sakurai, noted theorist in particle physics, was born in Tokyo, Japan in 1933. He received his B.A. from Harvard University in 1955 and his PhD from Cornell University in 1958. He was appointed as an assistant professor at the University of Chicago, where he worked until he became a professor at the University of California, Los Angeles in 1970. Sakurai died in 1982 while he was visiting a professor at CERN in Geneva, Switzerland.

Jim Napolitano earned an undergraduate Physics degree at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 1977, and a PhD in Physics from Stanford University in 1982. Since that time, he has conducted research in experimental nuclear and particle physics, with an emphasis on studying fundamental interactions and symmetries. He joined the faculty at Rensselaer in 1992 after working as a member of the scientific staff at two different national laboratories. He is author and co-author of over 150 scientific papers in refereed journals.

 

Professor Napolitano maintains a keen interest in science education in general, and in particular physics education at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. He has published a textbook, co-authored with Adrian Melissinos, on Experiments in Modern Physics. Prior to his work on Modern Quantum Mechanics ,Second Edition, he has taught both graduate and upper-level undergraduate courses in Quantum Mechanics, as well as an advanced graduate course in Quantum Field Theory.

WARNING -- Missing Chapter 8 (Relativistic Quantum Mechanics)

Be forewarned! This paperback version, ISBN 978-93-325-1900-8, of Modern Quantum Mechanics by Sakurai and Napolitano (2nd Ed) is missing Chapter 8 (Relativistic Quantum Mechanics) of the textbook. As someone else mentioned, other key topics may be missing such as density matrix. It may still hold value for some people since it contains much of the material of the standard US version, but not for me.

This paperback version is labeled as intended for sale in South Asia (India and such); see top left corner in red with white letters. Nothing wrong with selling this in the US. This info is provided just to make it easier for the buyer/customer to identify this 'abridged' version from the full book so that you can be aware of what you're purchasing.

Good content, poor binding

You get what you pay for...Material is slightly abridged from Sakurai's revised edition (missing a chapter on relativstic QM and some sections on density matrices).

The binding is absolutely worthless! It came off after less than 10 hours of perusing the book...Appropriate for a graduate-level quantum mechanics class, found it to be clear and helpful in terms of content. However, if shelf life is a big factor when you purchase textbooks, I would recommend that you buy a hardcover copy instead!

For a second look at Quantum mechanics (let's say after griffiths QM), I think this book is ideal. The book uses dirac notation throughout, and less emphasis on wave mechanics, but that is covered pretty well in Griffiths. The prose is clear, and the derivations are straightforward. The emphasis is on theory rather than applications, but if you want to do physics theory, this is pretty great. I think the problems are at the right difficulty level, they will challenge you, but in general don't require some trickery/genius insight: you can be confident the text does prepare you to solve them. In general, I think it's a very balanced book.

Ivor Myers is truly one whom God uses to make His Word plain and easy to understand! He has put a lot of research and thought into this book. He presents both sides of the Christian right and the liberal left, and does it in a sincere and compassionate way. In his introduction, Ivor promises this: "...should you decide to read this book: I will not write condescendingly or sarcastically. I will not present arguments from 'my personal experiences', which makes such an argument subjective at best. I will not use circular reasoning, which means that I will not substantiate the claims inside the Bible with evidence strictly from inside the Bible." This is a must read book, you will learn a lot from it and you won’t regret purchasing it, it is well worth the price!

A must read for anyone seeking to make business decisions, career decisions and life decisions. History is such a great teacher.

To anyone that recognizes a storm brewing in politics, religion, society environment, climate change, healthcare and the list could go on, then I think it is key to recognize from history what the future holds. How fascinating to consider the idea that perhaps Christianity is responsible for the rapid rise in atheism and that history is repeating. This book has really helped me see clearly the need to not be so easily swayed by apparent realities in the world today. I am passionate about trends and believe this book is a must read for anyone seeking to make better business decisions, career decisions and life decisions.

An easy read but a challenging book.

Unusually sophisticated approach. The skeptic turned Christian author stays in his lane, resisting the urge that many writers of the cloth fall prey to; using science to defend religion. After setting an extremely fair and data driven tone in the first half of the book, the author appeals to logic and history to assert that maybe, just maybe, the Bible has earned an open minded evaluation from the eye of every skeptic.

An easy read but a challenging book. I highly recommend this respectful, thoughtful, fair and unique approach to this thousand year old question; "Does God exist?"
