BARING IT ALL (A NOVELLA)

I have to say this is the first historical erotica I have ever read and what a hot piece it was. It started with such a sweetness and started to smolder until it was a hot burn. Christian was such a cold fish to Violet that you would never guess that they he even knew her as his sister's friend let alone his fianc�. Violet comes up with a plan to make sure that Christian is really even aware that she is a woman and that he is anywhere near even liking her let along loving her. Let me tell you do they figure it out. I have to say this was a very fun way to take an erotica and it was not over the top either which to me made it hotter.

Baring it All is the short story of Christian and Victoria. They're betrothed but lacking in the passion department. Christian has decided that passion is a distraction, so he plans to compartmentalize his life and passion does not belong in his marriage.

Victoria has loved Christian for years. But not matter what, she wants passion her life. She has a plan to see if passion can exist between her and Christian. If there can't be any passion, she'll not marry him. She would rather be alone and without the man she loves, than have a passion less marriage.

Victoria is risking it all in order to find out if they have what it takes to have a passion filled marriage. She's risking scandal, disgrace, and her future. All to find out if there's passion.

This is a short story, but definitely intriguing. Christian is more of a scholar than anything. He's always stuck in books and philosophy. He barely notices things around him. Victoria is very observant. She understand Christian, but at the same time she wants more from him. She's definitely a risk taker!

It's a fabulous story and well worth the time to read!

A hot, fun and entertaining read

Baring It All is a hot, fun and did I say hot read. Great for you need a quick pick me up during lunch or a break.

Lady Violet has been the best friend of Christian Jepstow's young sister for a long time. For that reason alone she knows that Christian is interested in women. Her problem is that he doesn't seem to realize that she happens to be a woman, yes he may have asked for her hand in engagement, but he has not laid a finger or even kissed her once. She loves him very much since much younger, but she cannot enter a marriage without mutual love or passion. And so she comes up with a plan.

Christian knows that passion can overrule his mind to the point that he forgets about his studies. It happened when he was younger, and he vowed to not let passion rule him again. Now he has betrothed Lady Violet, thinking that she is a safe person to marry. But when his sister unexpectedly goes out of town leaving him home alone he will be in big trouble.

Violet has decided to discreetly enter her betrothed's home and find out once and for all if they can have the marriage she dreams of or if their engagement will be over once she exits his house. But first she will have to seduce him into passion, by slowly undressing in front of him in the guise of helping him write his sister's article.

This story is sizzling, fun, very entertaining and has a lot going in such a quick read that will not leave you wanting but will definitely leave you wishing there was more. Kudos to Megan Frampton, she definitely kept me hooked and left me satisfied with this novella. If you want a nice quick and fun read, don't miss Baring It All by Megan Frampton

Decent source of review questions

Several of my classmates and I got this book as an ABSITE review source. I think that it has a significant amount of material and covers many subjects well. There are some claims made by the author that I feel are still quite controversial. There were some errors as well, it seems like they were in a rush to get this out for the 2006 ABSITE. Overall, a decent source of questions/answers that covers a lot of ground. Somewhat time consuming. Some chapters much better than others.

Good source of questions for ABSITE or Boards

As a general surgery resident I purchased this book to assist in my ABSITE review. I think this book provides a comprehensive review of common testable surgery topics but some chapters are better than others. The chapters are constructed to cover a different topic via a Q&A format. Each chapter is written by different authors so there is not a repeated framework for each section. This means that some sections are long and tedious while others are well-written and the questions are constructed in a more ABSITE/boards format. There are some errors in the textbook as well. The reader answers a set of questions (number varies per chapter) and then the answers are given at the end with extensive explanation. I enjoyed the explanation and definitely felt this was valuable to my learning. This is not a book that you can pick up 2 weeks before the ABSITE for a quick review. It is time intensive and will require some dedicated study time to get through but definitely worth it. An updated edition would earn 5 stars from me.

Good book

I have only just started using this review but am quite impressed with it. This book was suggested to me by a resident I met as a 4th year while at an interview.

I feel that it covers most if not all of the important topics tested on the ABSITE, and has very detailed easy to read explanations. Note that this is purely a Q and A book.

Overall, I am happy with my purchase. Another book you can try is the Rush review which I am told is also very good..

Jeffrey E. Young, PhD, is on the faculty in the Department of Psychiatry at Columbia University. He is the Founder and Director of the Cognitive Therapy Centers of New York and Connecticut, and the Schema Therapy Institute in New York City.

Janet S. Klosko, PhD, Codirector of the Cognitive Therapy Center of Long Island, in Great Neck, New York, is senior psychologist at the Schema Therapy Institute and at Woodstock Women's Health in Woodstock, New York.

Marjorie E. Weishaar, PhD, is Clinical Professor of Psychiatry and Human Behavior at Brown University Medical School, where she teaches cognitive therapy to psychiatry residents and to psychology interns and postdoctoral fellows. She also maintains a private practice in Providence, Rhode Island.

Will change how you see some/all people - Crazy accurate

While it is a therapy manual, I found it to be by far, the best book on the subject as I was able to understand, and agree with most everything in it as I interact with several people that perfectly exhibit such patterns. And while most common theories mash a bunch of random ideas together, this really ties it altogether into a clear and neat little package that makes a ton more sense.

In terms of understanding other people, it really helps to see them in a much higher, compassionate viewpoint, and prevents burnout, which is so common a problem. Heck, it even shows that subjectivity over objectivity is extremely valuable.

While it is written to help those that do not necessarily fit neatly into society perfectly, it actually helps to really recognize and eliminate life traps in a much bigger population (e.g. you), and perhaps most importantly, to see peoples problems as a strong need/call for help--and not malicious, selfish, manipulative actions.

Lots of people are unnecessarily suffering from various social disorders (e.g. BPD, EDD, and CPSTD), and I am surprised more professionals have not heard of this theoretical approach as it makes much more intuitive and structural sense, and besides, a handful of studies show its the best treatment method by far, esp in a group setting.

I really hope this goes viral in the health community and its main ideas reach mainstream public.

this is an excellent book for you

If you're interested in CBT and tend to focus on reframing negative self talk, this is an excellent book for you. The discussion outlines several maladaptive schemas in great detail to help with conceptualization and treatment panning.

This book is like getting a masters degree in a little over 400 pages. It's really worth it. It goes step by step explaining the theory and all the estrategies to use in this therapy. It is one of the most useful books in therapy I've read.

After a sequence of spy thrillers, Follett burst onto the historical fiction scene in 1989 with the megahit The Pillars of the Earth, set in twelfth-century England, and nearly two decades later (having written many other novels in the meantime), he followed with a sequel, World without End. His new book inaugurates what is to be a trio of historical novels (called the Century Trilogy), and it duplicates in structure the two novels mentioned above: showcasing the lives of five families from all walks of life and involved in various ways with the issues of the day from the outbreak of WWI to the early 1920s and reflecting these issues over a broad geographical range, the families here being from Britain, the U.S., Russia, and Germany. The social range of this big, sweeping, completely enveloping novel is announced in the very first line: “On the day King George V was crowned at Westminster Abbey in London, Billy Williams went down the pit in Aberowen, Wales.” Actual historical figures populate the narrative along with fictional characters, all of whom experience in different ways war, revolution, and the fight for women’s rights. --Brad Hooper

Expert Storyteller/Enthralling Tale!

I thoroughly enjoyed Ken Follett's epics, "Pillars of the Earth" and "World Without End". Though they are hefty tomes, the pages flew. Thus I jumped at the chance to read and review Follett's latest epic, "Fall of Giants" which promises to be the first in The Century Trilogy. When it arrived from Amazon at ~1000 pages and 4 inches thick, I found myself contemplating one of the advantages of having a slim Kindel (I don't). When the thing comes out in hardback in September it could be used a murder weapon!

But we all know that size doesn't matter when you've got an expert storyteller weaving an enthralling tale. I became so engrossed that I'd look up and 100 pages would have flown by. What is it that makes Follett so consistently "readable"? In "Fall of Giants" it's because the book is so well researched about the period (early 20th century especially WWI) with information on coal mining, trade unions, women's suffrage, protocols and manners of the minor royalty, politics, government, revolution and war. The story flows from this rich period but the riveting characters are at the forefront. Even the largely unsympathetic characters, such as the Earl, are made at least understandable because Follett thoughtfully portrays their motivations. There are few totally good or evil characters here, as it should be. (Though Follett seems none too fond of Russians and priests - be they Catholic, Anglican or Orthodox!)

In past reviews I have criticized authors that I believe would benefit from more editing (e.g., Steven King, John Irving) so why don't I find Follett's book to be too long? Because there are no slow spots, no political point pushing, and no self-indulgent purple prose.

I learned a great deal about WWI reading this novel, what led up to it and how it set the stage for WWII, which I hope is the subject of the next volume. It was fascinating to read about how the media and the governments of all the countries involved, lied to their people about how bad it was.

One other thing that I believe readers should know going in: as mentioned, this is Part One of a promised trilogy but, like "Pillars" and "World" it is a stand-alone novel. The reader is not left gripping a cliff at the end. I recently very much enjoyed Connie Willis' "Blackout" which DOES end with a cliff hanger and I am glad I knew that going in; some readers didn't and felt cheated. You will not feel at all cheated at the end of "Fall of Giants". Enjoy!

A painless lesson in a complex period of history!

I rarely read books this long as I am a slow reader. This story was so compelling, so many sets of characters from different countries (primarily Great Britain, Germany, Russia, France and the US) that I read it fairly quickly. The story line follows the developments of World War 1 from its start to finish. While I thought I knew the outcome, I had never understood this war at all. This book gave me a much better understanding of that time in history (even gave me an understanding of the Russian revolution) all without feeling like I was reading a history lesson. It was exciting, exhilarating, depressing, confusing, sad and joyful - I can honestly say, never a dull moment. The characters are great. Many strong women characters, at odds with their times. Gives a good understanding of class distinctions in England, and how these were somewhat obliterated by WW1. Just a well written interesting, and sometimes challenging read. I thoroughly enjoyed it and plan to read the second part of the Century Trilogy by Follett.

I SO wanted to love FALL OF GIANTS. I approached it as I would a vast, inviting body of water and, unfortunately, the water turned out to be only an inch deep. There was little danger of pleasurably drowning in its vastness--or enjoying a full immersion reading experience.

Ken Follett has been a favorite author of mine since his EYE OF THE NEEDLE became the benchmark for excellence in WWII espionage tales. That was a tough act to follow, but he didn't disappoint with THE KEY TO REBECCA, TRIPLE, or THE MAN FROM ST. PETERSBURG, to name just three of his subsequent offerings in that genre. Then he switched to another period in history and absolutely thrilled with PILLARS OF THE EARTH, which tackled a lesser known subject and made it fascinating through believable, embraceable characters.

I expected more of the same from FALL OF GIANTS and didn't get it. Perhaps because the subject matter is not as esoteric as the building of the great cathedrals, FOG reads like a textbook at times; perhaps because there are too many, none of the characters are fully realized. These one-dimensional characters are stereotypes and the story linking them to actual events is predictable, hackneyed even.

Mr. Follett's ambitious attempt to examine and make accessible the myriad defining issues of the early twentieth century does not quite work--others have done it better, with fewer words. I nevertheless respect this attempt and recommend FALL OF GIANTS to those who have not set their expectations too high.

Don't Miss This One!

I was wrong. I read the opening words of The Story of Reality and thought, “Here we go again.” Over the past few years we’ve been inundated with books that tell the story of the world, the story of history, through what we might call a biblical-theology lens. You are probably familiar with the standard categories: creation, fall, redemption, consummation, and new creation. Through these headings we can trace and tell the story of what God is accomplishing in this world. It’s helpful, it’s good, and it’s been done a lot recently to the benefit of the church. But this book is not that book. Not quite.

Greg Koukl’s The Story of Reality is, indeed, a telling of the story of the world through a five-part wide-angle lens. The subtitle nicely fills it out: “How the World Began, How it Ends, and Everything Important that Happens in Between.” But what sets his book apart is that instead of serving primarily as a theology text, it serves primarily as an apologetic text. Koukl tells this big story for the benefit of new believers who haven’t yet assembled the various components of the faith into a coherent whole. He tells it also for unbelievers who are approaching the Christian faith as skeptics or seekers.

Koukl means to show that the Bible makes sense of the entire world, that it forms the basis for a cohesive, coherent, satisfying worldview. In her foreword, Nancy Pearcey says it like this: “The Bible is not a fairy tale crafted by ancient people to give a sense of meaning to life. It is an account of reality. [Koukl] calls it a story only because, amazingly, it turns out that reality itself is structured like a great drama: It has a beginning and an end; it features a struggle between good and evil; it reaches a climax and then resolves into denouement and a finale. The cosmos is not just a succession of brute facts. It is the plotline of a grand story that God is telling through the verifiable events of history.”

Koukl structures his telling of the story of reality around five themes: God, Man, Jesus, Cross, and Resurrection. Under the heading of God, he distinguishes between theism and two of the major contemporary challenges: Matter-ism and Mind-ism—that there is no God or that everything is god. He defends theism and the Christian understanding of God as a real, personable, eternal being. Under Man he describes humanity as beautiful, broken, lost, and evil and shows why God must express wrath toward those who defy him.

Then he turns to Jesus, defending him as a historical figure and showing that he came to rescue those beautiful, broken objects of God’s wrath. Cross tells of the great transaction that occurred at the cross which allows us to take advantage of a great exchange through which we give Christ our sin and he gives us his righteousness. Resurrection tells of the resurrection of Jesus and shows how his rising from the dead offers hope that we, too, can and will rise forever. It tells also of the devastating reality of an eternal judgment and calls on the reader to turn to Christ in repentance and faith. “You have one of two choices. You can bend your knee to the Sovereign, beg for mercy because of Christ, be welcomed into his family as a son or daughter, and belong to him. Or you can reject the gift, stand alone at the judgment, and pay for your own crimes against God, such as they are.”

Several years ago I read Koukl’s excellent book Tactics and found that it made a deep impression on me. Much of what he said there continues to resonate and I often find myself imitating his language and concepts. The Story of Reality is a worthy successor. It is a book I would gladly hand to a believer, and perhaps especially a new believer, confident that it will help him see that the Christian faith offers good answers, the best answers, to what this world is all about, why it is the way it is, and where it is all going to end up. I would gladly hand it to an unbeliever, one who is interested in knowing what I believe and why I believe it.

Koukl promises to tell the story of reality. He does, and he does it beautifully. You’ll benefit by reading his telling of how the world began, how it will end, and all the important stuff that happens in between.

Grasping the Truth of Christianity

What makes a great nonfiction book? The material is accessible to wide audiences, the content is meaningful, and the style of writing memorable. Greg Koukl’s masterful book The Story of Reality qualifies in all three areas. I am so glad I received an advanced copy giving me an opportunity to promote this book.

First, Greg insightfully changed key philosophical and theological terms to make them more accessible to those who aren’t familiar with apologetic materials, without sacrificing their significance. For example he uses the Christian story of reality rather than referring to the Christian worldview. Another example is when he talks about the world is made up of physical things (material) and invisible things (immaterial). This approach opens the door for all of us who want to hand this book to an unbeliever or a spiritually growing Christian to assist them in understanding the Christian faith.

Second, the content is explained extremely well taking high level material and making it understandable to a variety of believers and spiritual seekers. His uncomplicated writing style helps the reader easily grasp the five key points and thus enables us all to clearly articulate the Christian story to someone else. Theologian Allister McGrath in his book, Mere Apologetics, has an entire chapter on the most effective ways to share the truth of Christianity. His number one suggestion for defending Christianity is to begin by telling people what it really entails. His point is many people have misconceptions about Christianity that can block their coming to faith. Koukl’s clear articulation of the Christian belief system helps brush away the false objections to Christianity that can block a person from accepting the truth.

Third, armed with the five key points of God, man, Jesus, cross, and resurrection, followers of Jesus will find the material memorable and easily retained and readily accessible. With careful reflection on each of these points, a person can clearly share the truth of Christianity with anyone interested. One of his key themes throughout the book is facts matter to Christians. In Chapter 22 Greg provides four facts of history that provide evidence for the bodily resurrection of Jesus. These four facts are supported by the vast majority of scholars (Christian and non-Christian) who study the life of Jesus.

The following is a brief outline of how the book is structured.
• Introduction: Greg begins to sketch out why truth is vitally important to Christianity or any belief system.
• Part 1 God: These chapters give an evaluation of the 3 major views of God. The views are atheism which claims there is no god, mind-ism (pantheism) where all is god and god is all, and theism, specifically the Christian story.
• Part 2 Man: The focus here is how we are intrinsically valuable but broken and separated from God because of sin.
• Part 3 Jesus: This section examines the mission of Jesus. Key to his work is to understand how and why God came to earth as a man to rescue us from sin.
• Part 4 Cross: God’s wrath upon humanity can only be absolved by the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus. Only through trusting in the finished work of Christ upon the cross can anyone be forgiven of his or her sins.
• Part 5 Resurrection: Greg begins with evidence for the resurrection of Jesus and the reliability of the gospels. However, the major focus of this section is how God will bring about universal justice. In the end evil will be dealt with, and Christ will reign.

If you are looking for a book that gives you the big picture of the truth of Christianity, then look no further. It is the perfect blend of apologetics and Biblical theology. This is a book I am going to give as gifts to both my Christian and non-Christian friends and neighbors. I believe after reading it you will do the same.

A "Story" Nobody Should Miss

I wish there were six stars here. I read a bunch of the very favorable reviews of this amazing book, so I'm going to try to say something different from what I read. The other reviewers didn't say much about the clarity of Greg's writing. It's like you're sitting down with him before a fire, just talking about the most important subject ever. And in the course of the time it takes you to read the book, Greg will raise and answer (give the Bible's answer) to "the hard questions." You know. If you're a Christian, they're the questions that wake you up at night. If you've not decided to trust in Jesus with your whole heart, your primary reason for hesitating is almost certainly addressed here too. And Greg doesn't give the "tried and true" answers to these questions. He gives what I'm am convinced are God's answers. And he does it briefly, clearly, honestly and convincingly. This is a book for every Christian who hasn't quite fallen in love with Jesus because you're not quite sure what Jesus is all about. It's a book to give your friends, even if they never read it. After all, perhaps one of their friends will see it, dust it off, and read it. It's that important that people have a chance to read this book. Notice that I haven't told you much about the content. The subtitle tells you that. And in a remarkably few pages, Greg delivers on his promise. One other thing: this book is cheap! Buy one for you and nine more for your nine best friends. It will be the best "Benjamin" you'll ever spend.
