You Are Not Alone.

When my father developed dementia some years ago, I didn't know what to do at first. This book proved to be a big help for my family and me, and now I'd like to be of some small help to you.

Dementia doesn't strike out of the blue. It builds up over a period of years, and in the beginning there is an understandable tendency to consider a loved one's unusual behavior to be just another sign of aging. However, when Alzheimer's or other dementias are at play, sooner or later you may well find yourself in need of some help when trying to deal with your loved one's needs. Indeed, until you understand more about Alzheimer's you may not fully appreciate the struggles your loved one is dealing with. It is a very scary thing to gradually lose some of your important mental capabilities, and there is a resulting tendency among those with dementia to either act out or to withdraw from normal family communications.

Here's your chance. If you even suspect Alzheimer's or another dementia (they are not necessarily the same), I strongly recommend that you get this book and read it. It will help you to better:

1. understand what your loved one is going through.
2. deal with the behavioral issues associated with Alzheimer's.
3. find medical help.
4. find additional Alzheimer's and dementia information from a number of helpful organizations.
5. discover support groups.
6. save a lot of time (when you are a caregiver for someone with dementia, time is usually in very short supply--hence, the title of the book).
7. evaluate financial possibilities.
8. understand that you are most definitely not alone in your dealing with dementia's effects.

An owner's manual for Alzheimer's patients and those who love them

I wish I had bought this book as soon as my mother was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease. My father has received very little information from my mother's doctors on what to expect as her disease progresses and more importantly, how to deal with these issues. When I received the book, I looked up her latest problem in the index, dizziness, and turned right to an informative section that helped clarify what's going on with my mom. The bathing sections are helpful for understanding and thus coping with those issues. I appreciate the depth of topics and detail for symptoms that Alzheimer's patients can have; I am also grateful for the huge emphasis on respite care for the caregiver. This gives my siblings and me another avenue of discussion in getting help for my dad, who like many spouses has his own health issues.

My only problem with the current hardback edition is the text size - it's a small font and closely spaced. I would hope that future revisions would enlarge the print a bit, especially since this book is generally going to be read by adults who appreciate a little larger print.

Overall I highly recommend it - I've been flipping between this book and the Mayo Clinic book on Alzheimer's, and while they both have excellent information, I feel that this book is the better one for detailed information on the myriad little things that crop up with care of a loved one with Alzheimer's disease.

Biografie stellt somit eine subjektiv-individuelle Lebensbeschreibung dar, die bei jedem einzelnen Menschen einzigartig ist. Die Biographie eines Menschen kennenzulernen, erm�glicht oft ein besseres Verst�ndnis seiner �u�erungen und Handlungen, Bed�rfnisse und Gef�hle. Dadurch ergeben sich Ansatzpunkte f�r eine positive Einflussnahme sowie zur F�rderung des Wohlbefindens.

Auch im Bereich der Altenhilfe gewinnt die Biografiearbeit immer mehr an Stellenwert. W�hrend in der Vergangenheit ein defizit�res Bild von alten Menschen herrschte, d.h. eine Betonung auf das, was der „alte Mensch“ nicht mehr kann, r�ckt immer mehr eine aktivierende und ressourcenorientierte Pflege in den Vordergrund. Der Fokus wird vermehrt darauf gerichtet, was der alte Mensch kann, welche Kompetenzen er noch besitzt. Es stellt sich immer h�ufiger die Frage „Wie wurde der Mensch zu dem, was er ist?“.

Die Besch�ftigung mit der individuellen Biografie kann dabei helfen, pflegebed�rftige Menschen besser zu verstehen und Handlungsalternativen zu entwickeln. Dies trifft insbesondere auf demenzkranke Menschen zu. Einerseits gelingt es Au�enstehenden h�ufig nur schwer, sich in die Welt der verwirrten Menschen hineinzuversetzen, sich dort zurechtzufinden und sie zu begleiten.

Durch Kenntnisse der Biografie k�nnen Verhaltensweisen und �u�erungen von demenzkranken Menschen besser gedeutet und interpretiert werden. Andererseits stellt f�r Menschen mit Demenz die Erinnerung an ihre Vergangenheit eine wichtige Ressource dar, weil das Kurzzeitged�chtnis eingeschr�nkt ist und das Langzeitged�chtnis, in dem sehr gut memorierte und meist lange zur�ck liegende Informationen gespeichert sind h�ufig noch relativ lange intakt bleibt. Menschen mit Demenz suchen h�ufig nach Identit�t und Vertrautheit, die ihnen Sicherheit geben, in einer Welt, die ihnen aufgrund der nachlassenden Erinnerungsf�higkeit immer fremder erscheint. Erinnerungen, die auf das Langzeitged�chtnis zur�ckgreifen, geben ihnen Halt und schafft somit Vertrautheit.

Biografiearbeit dient weiterhin dazu, das gelebte Leben eines alten Menschen mit in positiver Weise zu ber�cksichtigen. Insofern kann die Biografiearbeit einen Beitrag zur Lebensqualit�t im Pflege- und Betreuungsprozess leisten, da sie zur individuellen Betreuung, sinnvollen Tagesgestaltung und Aktivierung von Ressourcen beitr�gt.

The book description says the book is the “Salem Witch Trials meets Mean Girls.” It’s one thing when friends or reviews describe a book as a mash-up, but when it’s in the book description itself, I get a little skeptical. But Mean Girls is a viciously funny movie (“Raise your hand if you have ever been personally victimized by Regina George?”), and I’ve been intrigued by the Salem Witch trials for most of my life. It comes with the territory when growing up less than an hour away from Salem. I’ve visited Salem several times, and I’ve both been in and directed the play The Crucible. But it was the added info that author Adriana Mather is a direct descendant of someone involved in the witch trials that made the prospect of reading the book even more intriguing. Would she make the book be all the things—funny, biting, satirical, and spooky—implied in that mash-up?

Absolutely!

The story starts with Samantha Mather—a direct descendant (like the author) of Cotton Mather, a minister who supported the witch trials—moving from New York to Salem with her stepmother while her father is hospitalized in a coma. She moves into the old house where her father grew up, a place where strange, ghostly things start happening. In school the next day, her last name alone attracts negative attention among other students, particularly a collection of four girls and a boy known as the Descendants. Their family trees include ancestors who were accused, tried, and hanged as witches back in 1692. No wonder they don’t like Samantha.

She gets bullied, and as a teacher, I was slightly put off by how the school population (students and teachers) is somewhat complicit in the bullying. The school administration and her stepmother chalk it up to Sam’s somewhat troubled past. But this is fiction, and as the plot got more mysterious, spooky, gripping, and scathing, it bothered me less because there’s a really powerful and important message buried inside the intricate, twisty plot. But before I get to that message, I want to talk about the characters and plot.

Sam is a great narrator. She’s smart, snarky, and stubborn. She lacks some self-confidence because of all that’s happened to her, but she’s also got a strong sense of what’s right and wrong. As her situation at school gets worse, and she is ultimately accused of being responsible for some freaky and dangerous things happening at the town, all she wants to do is help everyone by solving the problem—a curse on the descendants (including herself) of those involved in the witch trials.

The supporting cast is also well-developed. I like that the Descendants have distinct voices and personalities, and Susannah—the first to reach out to Sam—was my favorite of that bunch. As in many YA books, there’s a kind of love triangle with Sam and two boys: sweet, noble neighbor Jaxon and proper, mysterious Elijah. I only loosely consider it a triangle, and it was never a distraction, but it was quite the contrary, as both relationships were different, unique, strong and necessary to the story.

There are at least two big mysteries, and it was fun watching them converge and diverge throughout the plot. The stakes are clearly raised through the book, and though I sniffed out the ultimate villain, that villain’s true motivations surprised me. I didn’t want to put the book down when I had to, particularly through the climactic confrontation.

What elevates this book toward best of 2016 status is the message. Sam is trying to stop a curse that has been repeating itself in Salem since the witch trials, but the unsubstantiated finger-pointing that occurred then has repeated far too many times in history. Whether it was the “Red Scare” of McCarthyism in the 1950s (the inspiration for Arthur Miller’s The Crucible) or the profiling of different ethnicities in many eras of history including the present, the hysteria is unnecessary. And it happens in high school also if one “popular” group of students socially banish others for no reason other than they’re different. Even without witchcraft, this happens, and hopefully well-written books like this can help point out why that’s dangerous while doing so with an enjoyable story too.

This book exceeded my expectations, especially after reading a few books that didn’t. Maybe my reading dry spell was a curse, finally broken by How to Hang a Witch and its FIVE STAR rating.

A Bewitching Tale for all Ages

ABSOLUTELY LOVED IT!! After watching the trailer for this book I was instantly intrigued and had to purchase. I have Prime and happened to order in time and was able to select same day delivery. As soon as the book came, I couldn't wait to read it. I couldn't put it down and read the entire book in a day (Saturday evening into the early morning hours of Sunday).

This book has it all, a strong lead character, mystery, wit, humor, history, and romance. I love when I can place myself in a book as if I'm one of the characters, and in this book I definitely was able to do that with Sam on her journey to end a 300 year old curse in Salem. I'm a huge history buff especially the history of the witch trials and this book definitely did not disappoint. I've already passed the book to my sisters to read and can't wait to read it again!

A ghost, a witch, a curse. What more do you need?

Loved, loved, loved this book. I usually buy books in my native language and have a hard time finding english books that I enjoy, so finding one is always exciting. I preordered this book after seeing the video trailer and thought it looked interesting. I love the paranormal and have always been interested in the Salem witch trials. I fell in love with the characters, I was rooting for Sam and Elijah. I tried guessing the end like I do with any other mystery novel and I have to say that the book did a good job at keeping you guessing. I enjoyed that the author who herself has an ancestor involved in the witch trials used historical accurate information in the novel. I received this book the day it was released and as soon as I got home started reading, I stayed up until 4 am to finish it. Could not put it down. Recommended for sure!

Excellent translations

This is a very nice selection of Gogol's greatest stories and plays, capably translated by Christopher English. The translations read far better than other recent versions by Wilks (for Penguin) and Pevear and Volokhonsky (for Vintage). Pevear and Volokhonsky are fine translators, but their more literal approach works better for Dostoevsky and Tolstoy than it does for Gogol. Christopher English translates with a more flowing and rhetorical style that matches the satirical insanity of Gogol. "Diary of a Madman" reads particularly well.

Btw, Robert Maguire did the sterling Penguin Dead Souls, but to the best of my knowledge he never translated Gogol's stories.

Being in the world

This volume would be an excellent choice for anyone looking to get an introduction to Russian literature and Russian realism / existentialism more generally. For this reviewer, highlights include "The Government Inspector", and from the Petersburg Tales, "Nevsky Prospect" and "The Overcoat".

"The Government Inspector" gives a humorous look at corruption in the Russian provinces during the mid-19th century. Reading this play you’ll feel like the plot is something you’ve read or seen before and that’s probably the case, but Gogol was the first to write such a tale. "The Overcoat" as deals with a Petersburg bureaucrat and the one thing that makes his life worth living; a coat. "Nevsky Prospect" highlights two ways in which to deal with the reality of pursuing women romantically. It gives a detailed and unique perspective of two men lusting after two different women. One man’s approach ends in death, the other man’s a near death; fascinating to say the least!

Some readers may grow impatient with Gogol's plots, for they typically unfold at a slow pace. For patient readers, however, they'll likely find Gogol's plots thought-provoking in their underlying statements about perception and how much it relates to one's overall sense of being in the world.
