It catalogs and describes in detail all 1,398 numbered species in 169 numbered genera found in this country, plus 120 species in 16 genera of the so-called “waifs.” Professor Hitchcock is the former Chief Botanist in charge of systematic agrostology for the U.S. Department of Agriculture, by whom the work was originally published, and an internationally known authority.
The heart of the book is its detailed descriptions of the family of grasses, the two main subfamilies, the tribes, genera, and species. Quick finding keys are provided for the identification of tribes and genera. Each of the species is given thorough botanical description, including various aspects of its morphology — size, shape, form of culms, blades, panicles, spikes, and flowers — and height, proper planting season, and range of distribution are noted. The Manual also outlines the common uses to which grasses are put and discusses in general terms their distribution, classification, nomenclature, and common names. The 1,199 drawings make identification of any grass species found in the United States a virtual certainty. The appended synonymy of alternate names for each species provides an authoritative taxonomy, eliminating confusion.
The nature lover with no more technical equipment than a keen eye can use this manual with profit, for a glossary of botanical terms is included. Naturalists, botanists, agriculturists, and horticulturists will find it valuable as a field and research guide to virtually all the grasses that grow in this country.

Landmark work

This two volume set was a landmark in its field. The taxonomy has changed a bit in the last 60 years but as someone else here noted, the grasses haven't changed and these books have the best illustrations and descriptions, and also botanical keys, to learn to identify them. Illustrated by Agnes Chase, who worked directly under Hitchcock for several decades, you can't get any better than this.

If you're new to grasses and want a primer to get a handle on the basic anatomy and structure I would strongly recommend you get Chase's A First Book of Grasses, which remains a little classic. It uses a top down approach, giving you the concepts of the genera from the standpoint of the grass spikelet being a reduced, leafy, flowering branch. From there it starts with the simplest spikelets that have remained relatively unchanged and proceeds to the grasses that have diverged the most from the original, basic plan and are often more specialized. If you combine Chase and Hitchcock's books you'll have the best of both approaches.

Like Grass 2?

This book and its Volume One companion are not new books, but together they are the definitive study of US grass plants. The black & white line drawings show detail that a photo cannot. These two books are probably a bit much for most people, but if you really are interested in identifying the native grasses, these will do the job for you.

I am impressed!

I bought both volume 1 and volume 2 of this book. What a great book. Brought back nice memories of sitting in the botany lab pulling Bromus rigidus apart for experiments. Easy to use, great keys, fine b&w illustrations. Once the grass morphology terms clicked into the brain again it was very easy to use. Vol 2 has the glossary and index, so buying both volumes is recommended.

Andrew S. Tanenbaum has an S.B. degree from M.I.T. and a Ph. D. from the University of California at Berkeley. He is currently a Professor of Computer Science and Vrije Universiteit in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, where, for more than 30 years, he has taught operating systems, computer organization, and networking to thousands of students. Professor Tanenbaum is the winner of the ACM Karl V. Karlstrom Outstanding Educator Award and the ACM/SIGCSE Award for Outstanding Contributions to Computer Science Education.

Albert S. Woodhull is Adjunct Associate Professor of Computer Science and Biology at the School of Natural Science, Hampshire College, Amherst, MA. He also served until recently as computer system administrator for the Department of Biology in the School of Natural Science and Mathematics at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, MA. He holds an S.B. degree from M.I.T. and a Ph.D. the University of Washington. Supported by a Fulbright grant, he has taught at the Universidad Nacional de Ingenieria and the Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Nicaragua.

About the Author

Andrew S. Tanenbaum has a B.S. Degree from M.I.T. and a Ph.D. from the University of California at Berkeley. He is currently a Professor of Computer Science at the Vrije Universiteit in Amsterdam, The Netherlands, where he heads the Computer Systems Group. He is also Dean of the Advanced School for Computing and Imaging, an interuniversity graduate school doing research on advanced parallel, distributed, and imaging systems. Nevertheless, he is trying very hard to avoid turning into a bureaucrat.

In the past, he has done research on compilers, operating systems, networking, and local-area distributed systems. His current research focuses primarily on the design of wide-area distributed systems that scale to a billion users. These research projects have led to five books and over 85 referred papers in journals and conference proceedings.

Prof. Tanenbaum has also produced a considerable volume of software. He was the principal architect of the Amsterdam Compiler Kit, a widely-used toolkit for writing portable compilers, as well as of MINIX, a small UNIX clone intended for use in student programming labs. Together with his Ph.D. students and programmers, he helped design the Amoeba distributed operating system, a high-performance microkernel-based distributed operating system. The MINIX and Amoeba systems are now available for free via the Internet..

Prof. Tanenbaum is a Fellow of the ACM, a Fellow of the IEEE, a member of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences, winner of the 1994 ACM Karl V. Karlstrom Outstanding Educator Award, and winner of the 1997 ACM/SIGCSE Award for Outstanding Contributions to Computer Science Education. He is also listed in Who’s Who in the World.

Albert S. Woodhull was a faculty member in the School of Natural Science, Hampshire College, Amherst, MA for many years. He has taught at the University of Massachusetts and Smith College in the US, and he has been a visiting faculty member on multiple occasions at universities in Nicaragua, supported on two of these visits by Fulbright grants. He also served as a computer and network system administrator at the University of Massachusetts. He holds an B.S. degree from M.I.T. and a Ph.D. from the University of Washington. Descriptive of MINIX structure

This book does a very good job at walking the reader through the various functions of MINIX, but it does not go into the specifics very well. In short, it is a good technical book, but it is not one I recommend for an introduction to Operating Systems, since it glazes over many things. So while I had a good grasp of how MINIX operates, I had little knowledge on how to add more to the OS, or how to write my own OS.

While MINIX was a good choice for the text, as MINIX is an operating system written to be understood, I just think the authors could gone much more in detail. A strong grasp of C is also required, so make sure you know your stuff before reading this book.

Great book, highly recommend

Great book, highly recommend.

The prerequisites, in my opinion, for reading this book is a basic knowledge of C and assembly, particularly, if you want to read through the source code in the back of the book. However, the book does such a phenomenal job in explaining everything within the text that it is not necessary to read through the source code. All parts of the text contain references to the actual source code, specifying line numbers of the source code, which makes it easy to read a paragraph, see its implementation in source code, read the next paragraph/pages, etc.

This book is specific to Minix 3 which is a microkernel OS, contrasting it with Linux & Windows, for example, which are monolithic/hybrid OSs. Minix 3, as presented in this book, is also simplified by being single-threaded.

A CD comes with it which contains the Minix 3 OS for use.

I had previously read Modern Operating Systems & Computer Networks by the same author. This is a very good author and I very highly recommend his books.

I wish this author would write a book on virtualization as well.

Great textbook

I found the book to be a good read and didn't tire me unlike some other technical books. Tanenbaum's mastery of the subject is evident and he interweaves practical examples throughout the text that really help understand the concepts he is explaining. The book is thorough and informative, and it helped me to understand some of the details that weren't discussed in class.

As a former meteorologist, pilot, air traffic controller, flight service specialist, and aviation weather instructor at a local college, I have found this to be the best aviation weather book on the market. I would also recommend its companion, Aviation Weather Laboratory Manual. Understanding weather is the most important training a pilot can have. The majority of aircraft accidents are weather related. Understanding how weather forms and what causes it to change will not only make flying safer for pilots, their crew, and also passengers. Understanding how weather forms and what causes it to change will also allow pilots to get more safe flight time hours when other less knowledgeable pilots are staying on the ground. Peter F. Lester, along with being a college professor, is also a pilot. He knows what he is talking about and has many years experience teaching the subject. This text delves into the subject of Aviation Weather thoroughly. It describes weather systems, their formation and movement relative to the aviation community. Prior to becoming a student pilot, my fascination with meteorology amounted to looking out the window to check precipitation and icing, and walking out the door to check temperature. This text sheds light on how weather affects aviation. That said; it is a textbook. It is informative in nature, and should be viewed as such. In other words, expect the theory... I'm not sure what the previous reviewer was expecting when picking up a text book (presumably for an Aviation Meteorology class,) but to reassure those that may be unsure; this isn't a riveting novel. The information provided is commensurate with that of the Flight Theory, Air Traffic Control and other aviation texts used in the classroom.

Hesse is my favorite author of all time

I will admit I'm a bit biased. Hesse is my favorite author of all time. I was expecting the sort of ho-hum experience one gets when exploring an author's "juvenalia" with this novella. I was pleasantly surprised to find the same sort of beautifully articulated, troubled, brooding situation that the young protagonist finds himself in, as what we see in Hesse's later and greater works. Despite the conspicuous absence of a supernatural / fantasy element that is present in works like Steppenwolf, Demian and Journey to the East, then, Beneath the Wheel has a flavor to it that makes it of a piece with the aforementioned. The abiding theme of the book, to my mind, is the way in which unbridled, vain and worldly ambition can and will destroy the most sensitive and capable of individuals. This is certainly a theme that recurs in Hesse. As this book demonstrates, however, this destructive ambition is not necessarily something that is naturally ingrained in a given life, but is most commonly found (and destructive) in those who thoughtlessly impress it and its ilk upon the lives of the young and the gifted. The title "Beneath the Wheel" takes on a wide range of meanings in light of this reading, and also in light of the fact that it is stolen from a phrase uttered by the protagonist Hans' consummately vain schoolmaster. In this latter context, it takes the form of a caution against Hans' devoted affections to his piously defiant friend Herman Heilner. In regards to this friendship, the Schoolmaster warns Hans that he is risking "falling beneath the wheel." This is little more, as Hesse narrates, than an effort to squash out Hans need to have a private, inner life apart from his social duties, achievement, in short: the stuff the world, particularly Hans' envious and admiring elders and superiors expect of him. Herman Heilner, who is an obvious projection of Herman Hesse's persona into the world of the novella itself, is an avant-garde school mate who is constantly questioning everything that is common and banal about the education he and Hans share in an elite, German State run academy. Interestingly, Hesse does not overtly project himself into the protagonist in this novella, but the thinly veiled allusion to himself in the person of Heilner seems telling in this regard. It renders the book into a counterfactual autobiography, I believe, of what might have happened had Hesse himself not succeeded, in some sense, in his own revolt against the canons of conformism, as Heilner is essentially a more liberated, authentic and free-spirited double of Hans in some sense. As per usual, Hesse's brilliant phenomenological-poetic and psychological descriptions of the patterns of human experience saturate this book, particularly as it approaches its tragic ending. The problems dealt with, in this vein, range from the discovery of love and sexuality to maturation to the inherent impossibility of leading an authentic life, as well as the folly of refusing to at least make a good faith effort at doing so. Hesse's descriptions of these things are not abstract, but characteristically concrete and visceral, as his protagonist delves into the deliciously dark, poignant and penetrating account of his own decline and demise. On that note, the one thing that disappointed me was that little Hans did in fact die. For him to drown so suddenly, after starting on a path as a manual laborer that might have redeemed his life, seems a little forced, and almost an easy way out for the author. The poignant words and affections of the pious Mr. Flaig to Hans' bewildered and provincial father at the end, however, offer a pointed and satisfying closure to the tale. Even though Flaig is a backwards pietist, someone scorned as an ignoramus by his town for believing in the literal truth of Scripture, he is the only one who is human enough to console Hans' father. He is also the only one, strangely, who is enlightened enough to point out the charade that took place at the funeral. At the funeral, the most ambitious men who influenced Hans' life both presided and spoke their eloquent elegies. As Flaig comments, however, each of these men also walked away in what was perhaps a willful, horrific ignorance of their share in the responsibility for poor Hans' plight: his disgrace and dishonorment, his decline into shame, self-isolation, and ultimately, his untimely death.

One of the books I was interested in having a look at from Michael Wiese Productions was this one, ‘Master Shots Vol. 3’. I did wonder when it arrived whether I should have seen the earlier two volumes first, but each book is very much a standalone, dealing with how to get the best use of a scene in the film camera. This volume points out how to get the most out of a scene. Christopher Kenworthy obviously targets the film director but the techniques shown can also be useful for the comicbook artist and even has a knock-on effect for the prose writer because it helps visualise the scene you want to describe.
The biggest surprise was seeing so many SF sourced films being used, including ‘Blade Runner’, ‘The Adjustment Bureau’ and ‘Star Wars’, although there are others like ‘War Horse’ and ‘Leon: The Professional’ as well. All of these are used to highlight the 100 examples that Kenworthy uses to make various points varying from actor or camera movement within a scene and to make the action interesting.
I found it very much an eye-opener and have already begun to wonder how it will affect my film watching for this kind of detail, especially as the pros themselves have these books for reference in their own collections.
It would have been interesting to see examples of where it doesn’t work as well as a contrast but then I’ve frequently said that of such books because you become mindful of what mistakes not to make.
In some respects, I found this book a fast read, however it isn’t really designed to bog you down with words because what you really want from this book is how to set up your scenes and even get the best performance from the cast involved. I suspect if you found this book useful, you’ll also pick up the earlier two volumes as well.

Picture This!

Back when I was 10 and forced to endure a week of Girl Scout camp in the Pacific Northwest (for parental reasons that, frankly, still escape me), I recall a gaggle of us trekking into the woods on a quest for blackberries. “Do you think we’ll get lost?” one of my friends nervously asked. “No way!” I replied, proudly informing them that, “I have a compass!” It was new. It was shiny. It even had the official Girl Scout trefoil stamped on the back as testament to its authenticity.

The fact I had absolutely no clue how it was supposed to work – never having read the instructions which came in the box – was a moot point. Somehow, I thought, if (1) darkness fell in the forest, (2) bears started chasing us or (3) we came upon a strange village where no one spoke English, all I had to do was flip open the lid and it would magically tell me what turns to take in order to get us safely back to camp.

Technology, of course, has given us tools far more advanced than the humble compass. Movie cameras, for instance. Yet how often do the uninitiated fall into the trap of thinking that if they just point it at something, it will always yield picture-perfect results worthy of the finest cinematography? For aspiring filmmakers of any age, "Master Shots, Volume 3" by Christopher Kenworthy is a must-have title for their resource library.

The book isn't just a treasure trove of black and white images from a diverse range of films but also offers detailed explanations on how specific framing, distance, lighting and angle work in concert to deliver symbolism, rich textures and move the story forward. Many of the frame grabs are accompanied by diagrams with black arrows indicating the movement of the actor(s) and white arrows corresponding to the movement of the camera. As the reader moves through the chapters, the diagrams taper off - a clever device for the readers to figure out the respective movements on their own and, thus, be able to apply them to their own projects.

I especially like the author's quote, "If you shoot a great actor in an average way, the result is disappointing. If you shoot an exquisite set without innovation, the money's been thrown away. If you shoot a wonderful story with traditional setups, the result will be boring." While "Master Shots" is targeted to filmmakers, there are a number of concepts that can have just as significant impact on readers whose medium of expression is a basic digital camera coupled with photo editing software. Kenworthy's passion for his craft is evident on every page and the takeaway value for future movie directors is a better understanding of the look, energy and emotion they want their scenes to achieve before the cameras ever start rolling.

and liked it so much that I ordered Volumes 1 and ...

I read Volume 3, and liked it so much that I ordered Volumes 1 and 2. I think there is a wealth of practical information, and these books are both educational and a good resource. Even seasoned directors and DPs can benefit from these books by seeing shots they may have forgotten about, or not considered.

My only complaint is the design layout. The book's type is unnecessarily HUGE, the illustrations are dark and sometimes poorly rendered. There is a massive amount of wasted space. The worst part of the layout is that the wiiiiiiiiiide book format is awkward to hold while reading. I really dislike this format, and wish the book was more compact. If the series of books were in a traditional format, they would be something I could bring with me to shoots, but the size is just too cumbersome to deal with.

My gripes aside, I highly recommend the entire series of these books.
