There's certainly no shortage of software design methods: most demand total allegiance, and many claim to be the only true way to delivering useful and maintainable software systems in a timely manner. Contextual Design describes another worthwhile software engineering method, one that places the user (or customer) at the forefront of the software design process from beginning to end. This method seems to be a particularly worthwhile addition to the literature.

Contextual Design begins with contextual inquiry, where software developers interview users and attempt to understand the way they work. Such "customer empathy" is central to the Contextual Design process and a total understanding of "work" within organizations is the mantra here. The book describes how, later in the process, software developers step back from the user data and do an "affinity," which is an overall analysis of hundreds (or even thousands) of individual facts. Contextual Design then explains the additional steps required to build systems using this method, including building models for flow, sequence, and artifacts, and establishing the cultural and the physical environments for a system. After getting an overview, developers consolidate these initial models, get more user input, and then design user interfaces.

This book, written in a clear, informal style without excessive jargon, reads very much like a book on business motivation. Various practitioners of Contextual Design offer short testimonials on the software design method.

The Kindle edition is laden with typos and editing errors. Looks like they converted an early draft rather than something that'd been copy-edited. The content is good; but it'd be nice if the obvious errors weren't so distracting.

It gives techniques and procedures on how to integrate customers (and potential customers) into the development cycle. The most important section for product managers is the chapter on techniques for interviewing (called "Contextual Inquiry" in the book's lexicon) details how to conduct an onsite interview, what to watch for, and which follow-up questions to ask. While geared to the systems analyst, the book is valuable to anyone responsible for gathering prospect problems at an onsite meeting.

A traumatic confession

This more or less autobiographical novel excels by its emotional depth.
It shows us the 'human' side of re-education camps and state firms.
The main character is an intellectual democrat, who sees and knows that the Chinese common man has been terrorized, deceived and used as guinea pigs by the powerful. They were / are the (dead or alive) victims of the power struggle at the top of the Communist Party with all its expulsions and rehabilitations. As the author states coldly: 'The Cultural Revolution established a new world record of criminals'.
When the inmates of the camps hear about another round of liquidations, they are happy that they already know their own punishment (at that moment, their work camp is a paradise).
This book is also an impressive tale about the battle of the sexes with candid treatment of sexual and marital problems.
The author is a master in the description of emotional scenes, sometimes as a violent participant and at times as a cold observer. But he always finds the passionate human touch.
The dream scenes are equally impressive, while the use of humanized animals is highly original.
This novel is not less than a masterpiece. Not to be missed.

Out of print! For shame . . .

And only one review of this gem!? I 'discovered' this novel about twenty years ago and re-read it every four or five years. I would compare it with Solzhenitsyn's Cancer Ward in quality and to some degree the stories are similar, each sharing a hero who has suffered for his integrity in a 'camp' and is incapable of achieving relationship with a woman. But as the reviewer above suggests, this is not the Soviet Gulag but rather hard labor with 'Chinese characteristics'. Ninety cents plus postage, get it.

He also offers a brief history of the Ice Age, setting the tone for the fictional narrative that follows. Now enter Jonas Taylor, who joins the crew in filming a TV survival series called Daredevils aboard a replica of a Spanish galleon. Taylor eventually comes face to face with this monster--which, of course, comes as no surprise to readers. Who wins this violent struggle probably won't come as a surprise either, but Alten's imaginative tale will keep readers turning the pages to make certain their guess, intuition, or "readerly" instinct is correct. fresh exciting prehistoric Jaws vs. humans thriller

Now in his sixties, married to Terry and living in Tampa with her and their two teens, Jonas Taylor feels old and tired as financial sharks surround him demanding payments of past due bills. Jonas nostalgically thinks back to his glory days when he was in his mid forties and captured Angel the prehistoric Megalodon shark that terrorized the Mariana Trench. However, that was the highlight film of his life; now he owes a ton of money and has to deal with a recalcitrant female teen.
When the top-rated reality TV show Daredevils offers Jonas a chance to provide expert commentary on a contest in the South Pacific, he leaps at the opportunity. Taking his daughter with him, Jonas joins the TV show.
Meanwhile Terry investigates whale beachings off Vancouver Island. Neither of the spouses is aware that they have entered the latest feeding zone of "Megs" and will soon be battling for their lives as they did before (see MEG and THE TRENCH).
The third exciting Prehistoric Jaws vs. humans thriller is fast-paced especially Megs who steal the show once again. Steve Alten refreshes his series through Jonas is aging not so gracefully as he wonders how two decades have almost past since he had his fifteen minutes of fame and now has a chance to recapture somewhat his glorious past. Much of the action is similar to the previous novels with the shark feeding, man vs. man disputing, and shark vs. hero/heroine scenes, but the aging cast makes it seem new leading to a swimmingly fine time for the Megsters.

About the Author
Dr. Gary J. Bronson is a Professor of Information Systems at Fairleigh Dickinson University, where he has twice been voted Teacher of the Year. Dr. Bronson has worked as a senior project engineer at Lockheed Electronics, has been an invited instructor and consultant to Bell Laboratories, and has served as a software consultant to a number of Wall Street financial firms. He has also authored several successful programming textbooks on C, C++, and Java™ as well as articles on teaching Excel using incrementally reinforcing case studies.

For the somewhat more ambitous learner...

If you need to learn C, then this is certainly good book. It's a bit too theoretical at some parts. I think most students lean more to a more practical approach. Still it does good job in explaining the concepts in a clear way. Lots of figures and exercises. Some students (new to programming) may find some parts too theoretical, but students with serious programming ambitions won't mind, and will seek help from their instructor if needed. I like the last 3 chapter that goes into C++.

One thing I do miss in this book,.. it does not come with a C editor/compiler, nor does it provide a reference to where you can get such C editor/compiler,... that students can download and use, to try out all the exercises.

For those interested you can probably get the lccwin32. Last time I check I was able to download and use this compiler. It's quite easy, and straight forward. Just do a google search on lccwin32. You probably find a site where you can download it.

Great book for beginners

Overall this book has been very useful in explaining C. My only real negative thing is the lengthy intro that it takes into explaining the history of computers. I would think that most people picking up this book have a pretty good idea of the early computing days or at least they probably wont bother with reading the history of it here. The book arrived in great condition and fairly quickly.

McCorkle always a pleasure

Crash Diet reveals McCorkle's strengths as a writer of the New South, which I first enjoyed several years ago in July 7th and Tending to Virginia. It's like I was never gone; her comic style intertwines effortlessly with the truly sympathetic in this collection of short fiction. There are lots of voices here, all of women grappling with changes in their lives that have brought chaos, rather than order. The pieces were written across a span of years and the author's propensity to drop topical references to our disposable culture can be a little distracting when moving from one story to another, as you inevitably pause to recall just when "Falcon Crest" or "The New Newlyweds Game" was hot. But that's just a little itch, and it doesn't date the material.

Wow! This woman can write

I found "Crash Diet" in a pile of books and was intrigued by the title. It was a collection of short stories by a southern writer. Usually, with a collection of stories - there is sure to be a couple that you don't care for - but not with this collection.
Each female protagonist was her own charachter. I felt as though I knew each one of them through Ms. McCorkle's description and characterization. Some funny, some sad - all uniquely interesting.
I highly reccomend this book.

I usually don't read short stories, but I read a review of this book and decided to take a chance. I'm glad I did. Ms. McCorkle does a wonderful job of portraying various types of women. It is perfect bedside reading.
