Bullet Penetration: Modeling the Dynamics and the Incapacitation Resulting from Wound Trauma, by Duncan MacPherson

Bullet Penetration describes the analysis and testing of a model of bullet penetration dynamics; this model is a significant technical advance over what has been heretofore available. This penetration model is directly related to understanding the production of an incapacitating wound by the bullet parameters (velocity, weight, shape, diameter). Incapacitation from wound trauma is a complex subject that has been controversial for many decades, and all aspects of this subject are discussed in detail in Bullet Penetration. The new results in this book are described in a style and vocabulary that make the basic principles and results understandable to the layman. This outstanding book should be read by everyone who is critically dependent on handgun bullet performance as well as all those with an interest in any aspect of wound ballistics. The topics covered in Bullet Penetration include physiological and psychological effects in incapacitation from wound trauma, modeling of bullet penetration, and modeling of bullet expansion. The realities associated with the desired "one shot stop" and the ignorance and/or fraud in "combat data" claims are discussed in detail. The primary focus is on handgun ammunition, but the principles and many of the results are also applicable to rifle ammunition. The book has 307 pages, including 69 pages of bullet photographs and graphs of test results.

Very Technical, But Loaded With Great Information
By Shawn Kovacich
This is one of the best "technical" books on ballistics that I have read in some time, perhaps ever. However, please be advised that it can be quite dry at times and reads more like a college textbook rather than something meant for the masses. Although having said that, if you are interested in ballistics and its effects on the human body then you definitely want to have a copy of this book in your own personal library. This book cannot be read in one sitting and instead should be digested a bit at a time and then used as a reference manual once it has been completed read through a time or two. The one thing that I was disappointed with was the lack of illustrations and photographs. There are a few, and I do mean a few, that merely show bullets and varying degrees of deformity, but no actual photographs of wounds created by said bullets. This is a very big drawback in my opinion especially considering the subject matter that the book deals with. Now there is plenty of graphs, charts, and tables to show the scientific evidence on the material being presented, but like I stated earlier, a bit dry.

Now the best advise that the average person could learn from this book I am going to give you for free in this review, and it is as follows:

The three primary components needed for effectiveness with handgun bullets are as follows and in order of importance. These are facts and are indisputable!

1. Bullet Placement - Hit the correct target and you will have better results than if you don't.

2. Bullet Penetration - The farther the bullet goes into the body, the more damage it will cause.

3. Bullet Diameter - The larger the hole the more permanent damage that is done to everything that is in the pathway of that bullet. A 1 inch in diameter hole will cause more permanent damage than a 1/2 inch hole. In other words, a .45 will cause a bigger diameter hole, hence more permanent damage, than a .22.

For the average person this book might be a bit too much on the technical end, but for the firearms aficionado or firearms instructor it should be a permanent fixture in your personal library.

A Ground-breaking Publication
By Pierre J. Van Walt
The author, the late Duncan MacPherson, was an aerospace engineer involved in the US space programme who developed numerous techniques and equations to guide missiles and spacecraft. MacPherson used the skills so developed to model the dynamics of terminal ballistics. The models developed are not based on theory, but on extensive practical testing included in the text for scrutiny.
The result is a 300 odd page b&w hardcover thesis on the test results and the subsequent model development. Although this book is extremely technical and aimed at the ballistic and forensic practitioner, most of it is surprisingly understandable to the lay ballistician, even though sections may require a re-read or two. Basic maths is essential. It is not a book to read from cover to cover at bed time (although it might be an excellent first acquaintance). It is a book to work through in good time while wide awake, but the reward for doing so is tremendous. A whole new world opens up to the reader.
It will unfortunately not be read by the masses of hunters and shooters who have grown up on wild terminal ballistic thumb-sucking and therefore many myths will prevail, despite the existence of scientific proof to the contrary such as this. It is a truly impressive and excellent piece of ground-breaking work that should forever grow in stature amongst its readers and users. If you are prepared to work getting through it and shedding some misdirected pre-conceptions - this is a book for you.

Published reviews of Bullet Penetration
By Karen Carpenter
"This remarkable book...advances wound ballistics to the status of a mature predictive
science...This superb book can provide those responsible for weapon and bullet
selection with the reliable information they need to make informed choices -- to
balance intelligently the inevitable pros and cons that accompany these compromises. It
further provides data and insights that are of crucial importance to Wound Ballistics
Researchers, Forensic Pathologists. Firearms Examiners, Trauma Surgeons, Ordnance
Engineers, Law Enforcement Personnel and others critically dependent on firearm
performance. "
- Fighting Firearms, (January 1995) by Dr. Martin Fackler, M.D., President of the
International Wound Ballistics Association

"This new work in the field of wound ballistics introduces a model of bullet penetration
dynamics based on solid physics and mathematics that will interest those trying to get
to the bottom of the 'stopping power' debate...Previous internal ballistics models are
reviewed, analyzed and presented along with a considerable amount of testing and data
done by the author in forming his model and conclusions. Though this book is not light
reading, its graphs and clear explanations make the subject more understandable to
non-physicists. The author, an engineer who worked with the space program, drew
much medical information from Dr. Martin Fackler and other authorities from the
International Wound Ballistics Association."
- The American Rifleman (June 1995)
