A Step Away From Paradise tells the story of Lama Tulshuk Lingpa’s life and his unlikely expedition to a land beyond cares while reflecting on what this means for the rest of us. The book is richly illustrated with portraits of those who went with Tulshuk Lingpa and the places he traveled to. The book also delves into the tradition within Tibetan Buddhism of Shambhala and the hidden valleys, which mirror legends around the world of utopias and lands of milk and honey, thus showing that the quest for the hidden land is a universal urge of humanity.
WRITER AND PHOTOGRAPHER Thomas K. Shor was born in Boston, USA, and studied comparative religion and literature in Vermont. With an ear for unusual stories, the fortune to attract them and an eye for detail, he has travelled the planet’s mountainous realms—from the Mayan Highlands of southern Mexico in the midst of insurrection to the mountains of Greece and, more recently to the Indian Himalayas—to collect, illustrate and write stories, with a uniquely personal character often having the flavor of fable.
Shor has lectured widely on his writings and has had solo exhibits of his photographs in Europe and in India. He is the author of Windblown Clouds and can often be found in the most obscure locales, immersed in a compelling story touching upon fundamental human themes.

An amazing story about a reincarnate Tibetan Lama

A most compelling read, I couldn't put the book down, "A Step Away from Paradise" will surely become a modern day classic about the magic and mystery of a visionary Tibetan Lama who is guided to lead a group of followers to a sacred hidden land of immortality in Sikkim. The investigative style of journalism has you questioning your own belief system as you decide whether the main character Trulshuk Linga is a madman or a mystic putting his pure vision to the test. By the end of the book you are left well satiated with Himalayan lore and wanting more, hopefully to be found in Shors new book out this Autumn 2013. Enjoy!!

A must read for trekkers
By Boring conversation anyway
I loved this story, the author knows how to pace the novel in such a way that everything is revealed in the proper time... just like a hidden treasure. It was especially interesting because I trek in this region yearly, and know a lot of the places and landmarks in the valley. I'm going back to Kanchenjunga this year, now I'll be keeping a lookout for a hidden land now :)

I am not a believer in Tibetan Buddhism, though I am interested and positively inclined towards the Tibetan people. I read this book because it popped up after I read another book about the concept of the terton, a "treasure finder" who magically discovers scrolls, statues and revelations. The previous book was so credulous that I couldn't take it seriously, but I found this book much more interesting because the writer maintains a somewhat skeptical stance towards the things he is told.
Thomas Shor interviewed dozens of people who had first-hand experience following a guru who claimed that he could gain them entrance into a beyul, a concept of an earthly paradise on which Shangri-la in Lost Horizon s a somewhat bastardized version. The concept is not unlike western religious believers who sell everything they own and wait on a mountain-top for the Second Coming--and so far have always come away disappointed, though usually still believing. These Tibetan folks also got "close" to their promised land after walking away from all their earthly possessions, but their take-away seemed even more positive than that of let-down followers of Christian prophets. They seemed forever changed by even approaching the entrance (high on a glacial mountain) to a land of perfect comfort and earthly attainment.
Not everyone will enjoy the story, but I did and so I recommend it if you have a somewhat skeptical but open mind towards Tibetan supernatural events.
