Rosetta Stone for Jazz: Pentatonic and Hexatonic Scales in Jazz Improvisation
By Mingooks
I got this book because I needed a clear understanding of what makes a scale sound good with a particular chord. I was getting very frustrated with my playing because although I was playing the scale recommended for a particular chord, it just didn't sound that good, there were notes that made no sense and sounded awful!!! I came across this book in my online jazz class which came highly recommended. I got it and for the first time, I finally started to understand the elusive language of jazz. It's like finding the Rosetta stone to unlock its mysteries. Immediately upon reading the first several chapters and seeing the relationships between scales, chords, modes, and how they all function, and learning what notes work and what doesn't work, it made my practice sessions something I couldn't wait to do. In the past, I felt it was sheer drudgery to try to practice. Now that I'm getting a better glimpse into how the jazz vocabulary actually works, I'm learning to "speak" it more fluently than ever before through my instrument. I can actually enjoy what I'm coming up with in my improvisations. I no longer have to "hunt and peck, let's see what sounds good" because I now have a "roadmap" to help me navigate through the landscape of jazz and enjoy taking the scenic route. I highly recommend getting this book. It has been the most helpful of all the books I've acquired through the years and I've got tons of them gathering dust. This is one I won't put away. It is my jazz bible, rosetta stone and jazz GPS navigation system all in one.

Great Information
By James L Brown
I absolutely love tis book great information and the authors approach is more about your understanding the information to be able to formulate a plan than just giving you idol exercises that don't help you retain the theory behind the principals.

but it is definitely full of useful concepts for improv
By Christopher M. Carden
I'm still working through this book. It's not the kind of book that you can look at a page and work on one lesson, but it is definitely full of useful concepts for improv. It's a great supplement to the excellent Ramon Ricker books, giving you a different way to approach Pentatonics.
