Entertaining, but shallow

This book is OK. There's plenty of action, twists and turns in the story. I would say it is equivalent to a modern Hollywood action movie, like "The Expendables". And just like The Expendables uses the fame of its actors to draw a crowd, this book uses the fame of the Elite franchise to draw readers. Nothing wrong with that, it's all part of marketing. As long as you approach it with the right expectations, you will not be disappointed.

For a bit deeper analysis, I would compare it with Drew Karpyshin's books about Darth Bane in the Star Wars Franchise. In that comparison, Drew Wagar's book falls incredibly short. Where Karpyshin draws up compelling characters with deep motivation driving every action, Wagar answers with shallow characters who seem mostly driven by madness. Where Karpyshyn lays down the fundaments of a credible ideology, Wagar doesn't even seem to grasp basic psychology. After reading Karpyshyn's books, I felt like I gained a better understanding of the real world, alongside a largely overlooked part of SW franchise. But after reading Wagar's book, I am not left with any insights into anything, just a vague feeling of having been entertained for a short while.

I imagine the five stars rating system as a bell curve, where three stars is an average book, and the others are deviations from the average. It should be exceedingly rare to give a five star rating. And this book is smack in the middle, a book like most other books, just a fictional story that could keep you entertained for a while, but nothing you will remember or tell others "you have to read this". But it is neither a book where you tell others "no, don't waste your time with it". So I give it three stars.

Fantastic - highly recommended - can't wait for a sequel!

Excellent read. Really enjoyed the characters, and the settings. It's fast paced, with plenty of changes of location, a few plot twists along the way, and even if you're not a fan of the Elite game series, is definitely worth a read!

Really looking forward to a sequel!

For the price, it's a steal, and a great book for anyone who's a fan of space opera.

Competent, maybe Dangerous, but definitely not Elite

I, too, remember the original, along with the Master 128 version and the sequels. Not just the official ones, but FFE3D and Oolite as well. Good games all. I was certified Elite by Acorn, in the early days. Play E:D and Horizons now.

So, how does this book stack up?

The first thing to bear in mind is that I'm a harsh reviewer when it comes to existing universes. A lot of the difficult work has been done, after all. I've reviewed a lot of fan fiction over the years, written some as well. I have intense difficulty in writing up to my expectations, which is where expectations aught to be. There's no higher rating than the best, for the obvious reason that it's the best, so there should be very little worthier of praise than that which merits the best. That is why other ranks exist, not to condemn but to show limits.

This book has limits. It's impossible to empathize with the characters. They're all unlikable, self-centred morons with zero compassion for anyone or anything else. If that was just the bad guys, it would be bad enough, truly evil people are very rare and very self-destructive. They're not effective villains. But when it's the good guys as well - then it's insane.

A farm boy gets in over his head and rescues a Senator, and in the big battle gets saved by a pilot who had left and returns - think that one got used in 1978.

Lots of minisodes here, welded together, rather than one cohesive story. I see the author's description bears striking resemblance to that of Anne McCaffery's, whose first Dragonrider novel was exactly that - independent short stories rewritten as a novel. It featured a heiress whose family was slain reclaiming her title then handing it off to a minder. There are some differences here, but they're mild.

So it's derivative. That's where it loses the second star.

So why rate it Competent-to-Dangerous? Because, once you subtract the derivative plot elements and obvious Plot Device This Way signs, the basic narrative hangs together well, the universe feels basically as it should, all the elements are right, the key ingredients are there. I do not regret buying the book, the author did a perfectly respectable job. It functions. If it were a trading vessel in this universe, it would probably be an upgraded Krait or Sidewinder. Something that'll carry a story but only to safe spaces.

A Great Overview of CI in the .NET World

I still remember the first time I was on a project that used NAnt and CruiseControl.NET. It was years ago and both were new tools with plenty of bugs. The project manager took one of the team's architects and dedicated him to getting CI up and running. I didn't work with him for another 9 months. It was a complete nightmare. Every morning was dedicated to finding out why the builds failed, fixing the issue, and then manually rerunning the builds until successful. Then it was off to show management the new build reports. It didn't take long for them to not want to be hassled with the process. A year after it all began the code base was removed from the CI process and went back to manual builds.

Not a very good story to start the review of a book on CI that I highly recommend you read. Times have changed, the tools have improved, and with books like this available you have no reason to not give CI a go. You may have plenty of excuses, but no reasons. Luckily this book contains a nice summary of excuses commonly used and does a nice job of debunking them.

The book starts off with a chapter titled Understanding continuous integration which gives a nice overview of CI and introduces the CI tools. They include source control, CI server, feedback mechanism, build manager, unit test framework, documenting, and code-analysis tools.

The book continues with chapters on Setting up a source control system, Automating the build process, Choosing the right CI server, Continuous feedback, Unit testing continuously integrated code, Performing integration, system, and acceptance testing, Analyzing the code, Generating documentation, Deployment and delivery, Continuous database integration, and Extending continuous integration.

One of the things I like about the book is that it is .NET centric and not Microsoft centric. It introduces the Microsoft tools, other vendor's tools, and open source tools. For example Subversion, TFS, SourceSafe, Git, and Vault are introduced as source control options, Nant and MSBuild are introduced as build tools, and CruiseControl.NET, TFS 2010, and TeamCity as CI servers.

The authors do a great job of providing in-depth examples of the different tools and technologies. The example's accompanying downloadable code is very well organized and usable.

Although implementing CI can be a big change for a team, this book will definitely help educate you and your team on all the different tools available in the context of .NET projects. That give a big advantage when planning your team's path to CI.

All in all I highly recommend using CI on your projects, but I recommend reading this book first even more.

This is a great book for beginners, but doesn't go into great details that you ultimately need to become an expert. The book probably covers 50-60% of the things you'll need, the rest is your own research and trial/error process.

The book is well written. The authors have gathered so much information in this book that it will help those of you who want to use CI. I'd heartily recommend this book for anyone making the transition to Continuous Integration in the .NET world.
It is simple to rate this book: every .NET team not using Continuous Integration should own and read this book!
I have been using CI in my own team, and have also been assisting several clients in setting up CI. Over the past several years, I have seen many teams using CI just to compile their code. If your team is doing just that, than this is the book you need to read and follow. All CI concepts are illustrated with examples. The authors use a large number of diagrams, tables, and code snippets with detailed explanations.

Note: This was also the first technical book which I read on my Kindle, and the rendering of the diagrams, tables, code snippets was just great.

Target Audience:
The target audience for this book is the entire .NET development team. For a beginner trying to understand Continuous Integration, for a Tester who wants the system to be in a working state before and after integration, and the Manager who want to reduce risks, this book will give a solid foundation of CI and its concepts. It is for all kinds of .NET developers: Beginners, Intermediate as well as Experienced CI users.

WRITER AND PHOTOGRAPHER Thomas K. Shor was born in Boston, USA, and studied comparative religion and literature in Vermont. With an ear for unusual stories, the fortune to attract them and an eye for detail, he has travelled the planet’s mountainous realms—from the Mayan Highlands of southern Mexico in the midst of insurrection to the mountains of Greece and, more recently to the Indian Himalayas—to collect, illustrate and write stories, with a uniquely personal character often having the flavor of fable.

An amazing story about a reincarnate Tibetan Lama

A most compelling read, I couldn't put the book down, "A Step Away from Paradise" will surely become a modern day classic about the magic and mystery of a visionary Tibetan Lama who is guided to lead a group of followers to a sacred hidden land of immortality in Sikkim. The investigative style of journalism has you questioning your own belief system as you decide whether the main character Trulshuk Linga is a madman or a mystic putting his pure vision to the test. By the end of the book you are left well satiated with Himalayan lore and wanting more, hopefully to be found in Shors new book out this Autumn 2013. Enjoy!!

A must read for trekkers

I loved this story, the author knows how to pace the novel in such a way that everything is revealed in the proper time... just like a hidden treasure. It was especially interesting because I trek in this region yearly, and know a lot of the places and landmarks in the valley. I'm going back to Kanchenjunga this year, now I'll be keeping a lookout for a hidden land now :)

The concept is not unlike western religious believers who sell everything they own and wait on a mountain-top for the Second Com

I am not a believer in Tibetan Buddhism, though I am interested and positively inclined towards the Tibetan people. I read this book because it popped up after I read another book about the concept of the terton, a "treasure finder" who magically discovers scrolls, statues and revelations. The previous book was so credulous that I couldn't take it seriously, but I found this book much more interesting because the writer maintains a somewhat skeptical stance towards the things he is told.

Thomas Shor interviewed dozens of people who had first-hand experience following a guru who claimed that he could gain them entrance into a beyul, a concept of an earthly paradise on which Shangri-la in Lost Horizon s a somewhat bastardized version. The concept is not unlike western religious believers who sell everything they own and wait on a mountain-top for the Second Coming--and so far have always come away disappointed, though usually still believing. These Tibetan folks also got "close" to their promised land after walking away from all their earthly possessions, but their take-away seemed even more positive than that of let-down followers of Christian prophets. They seemed forever changed by even approaching the entrance (high on a glacial mountain) to a land of perfect comfort and earthly attainment.

Not everyone will enjoy the story, but I did and so I recommend it if you have a somewhat skeptical but open mind towards Tibetan supernatural events.

More plot twists and evolutions, I am enthralled.

I am just about finished reading this volume, and dreading the end of the series.
The characters evolve, particularly Lenu', and the plot keeps moving, in convincing ways. I love this series, and am already mourning the end of it. Having grown up in Italy, a bit later than the characters, I am very familiar with the 60s, 70s in Italy, and the books bring back lots of memories.
But all good art is universal, and the success of this series in America confirms it.
